Why $4.15?

I know, because "it says so."

cots shows the tax hit was $10.85M for 2023, so I guess, when he opts out, the remaining $4.15M that makes it $15M is what counts on 2024.

Another sunken cost!!!!

10.85M (CBT) - 8.3M (salary) = 2.55M prorated buyout 2023

6.7M (buyout) - 2.55 (proration) = 4.15 CBT if JT buys out.

If he opts in: 10.85M CBT hit ((8.3+13.4)/2).

I get it and wrote that, but why call it a "buy out?"

It's a 2 year deal. JT can "buy out" the second year of the deal by not taking 6.7M from the SOX, but still getting the other 6.7. Yes, the wording isn't great.

The lux tax for next season would be 4.15M as he has already assumed a portion of the buy out during 2023 towards the CBT.

I'm almost sure the 4.15 mill won't go toward 2024, but if you have info that shows otherwise, link us up. It might go toward 2023 but I'm not sure about that either. This is one of the most confusing parts of the lux tax calcs.

It makes sense, since the contract counted for $10.85M for 2023, and his total outlay will be $15M for 2 years. ($8.3 M for 2023 + $6.7M "buyout" for 2024)

$15M- $10.85M= $4.15M

You think it'll retroactively go towards 2023 even through the 2023 CBT has already been calculated?

I get and said as much, at least twice.

You keep going on and on, even after someone agrees with you.

Maybe I'm wrong, but we'll see.

It probably depends on the timing of the calculation of the CBT at the end of the year and when JT can buy out.

Don't ask stupid f***ing questions then.

Worse is answering a stupid question 3 times, despite the questioner agreeing with your first reply.

Besides, my question was more directed at the wording of the "buy out," which you admitted "wasn't great."

I know, I know, you can't help yourself.

That $4.15M has to be accounted for somewhere.

I do wonder, if it might end up counting on the 2023 ledger, and maybe that was part of the reason we "left a few Million" on the table.

Do bonuses count on the lux tax?

Tuner has already earned $800K for reaching 544 PAs and gets another $200K for getting to 560.

I believe bonus payments DO get added to the CBT.

The tax calculations aren't finalized until December.

Posted

On December 2 in each contract year, the Commissioner's Office notifies every team that exceeded the tax threshold that they must pay their tax by January 21 of the following calendar year.

Most likely finalized at the end of November, but the point still stands. It's finalized after the World Series, but prior to the Winter Meetings.

So, did someone miscalculate a bonus, last year, or WTF happened?

Not that it mattered for this year, we weren't going over, this year, anyway.

The drop in comp pick slots hurt.

Not sure what you mean. Last year they went over at the start of the season. They ended up over by about $6 million.

The beef was that they could have gotten back under if they traded JDM or whoever at the deadline.

My prediction for this offseason is that the Boston Red Sox will be INTERESTED in Yamamoto, but will not sign him. With Ohtani injured and Urias being a sack of s***, the list of TOTR starters is getting shorter. Sox will get outbid for sure. I'm not sure they even end up with Blake Snell. My guess is the best they do is Jordan Montgomery and Seth Lugo, two competent guys that won't really wow anybody but are an improvement on the trainwreck of 2023.

They might have actually tried that. The 2022 JD Martinez want exactly a hot commodity…

Reportedly Bloom dangled him but was asking for a lot.

Bloom can do "reported interest" in various ways - he's versatile.

Ask for a little just to get the salary relief.

I just don't understand the point of going over by a few million and then not really trying to go for it. Either go way over the CBT or get under. Why half-ass it?

With Bloom, I like the plan, but the execution is falling far short...

From what I understand the only 'acceptable' deal Bloom found was with the Mets, but then the Mets backed out at the last minute.

Signing Montgomery, Lugo and maybe Duvall and a decent LH'd RP'er should make us noticeably better, but IMO, not by enough to make us near a top contender status.

Snell, Monty, Duvall and LRP, more so.

I'd love to see Yamamoto, Snell & Duvall.

As for X-man not being traded at last year's deadline, I believe X-man had a no-trade clause in his contract, so I don't think Bloom should be blamed for that one.

I don't either, but if they told him, "Look, we will not be re-signing you, this fall, so would you like to be traded to a contender and take away your QO status," he may have said okay.

He did not have to be. Trade him for nothing.

Or, trade him and Stahm or Nate or Wacha or....

I like Snell, but buyer beware on making him your top pitching acquisition.
