Bello was due for a bad start. That it was against the A's was a bit surprising.

Bello didn’t have it; it happens to even the best pitchers. One could question his pitch mix early. IMO, he let his emotions get to him. How often do you see great pitchers give up a couple runs in the first or second, then settle down and give up nothing more. Bello never settled down.

Worse though was the A’s tried to give them the game and the Sox failed to take it.

Raffy’s injury didn’t help this series either. He was so hot in Chicago and we all know what a streaky guy he can be.

Pretty awful game. Bello blew it of course, but a lot of Sox choking 7th-9th innings after getting it to 6-5 in the 6th. Casas especially.

Awful!!!! Can’t get too high or too low with this team. They pulled you in and then they do this.

this team can't handle prosperity, been like that all season, can't hold on to their own confidence, something missing

admittedly, i had little hope for this team at the beginning of the year. then, the last few weeks, i had started to believe. then this ********. lose 2 outta 3 to the gotdamn A's.

I'm always looking for evidence of a Sox pitcher tipping his pitches.

This month Bello has given up 6 dingers in 17 innings compared to 0 dingers in June in 34 innings, 4 dingers in May in 27 innings, and 3 dingers in April in 12 innings.

His 15.3 HR/FP isn't that far off from what he was doing in the minors. He throws his below average 4 seamer too much and it gets hit hard (3 of the HR's in July). His slider has been pretty terrible this season too (-7 Run Value).

They need to fix his fastball spin rate issue. And they won't address it until the offseason.

Makes sense. Not tipping, but simply a better "book" on him.

I think his fastball is what it is. I think some posters were just too high on Bello. He's a mid rotation guy (on a contender) probably and that's fine. If the Sox can start churning some of those guys out, it's very good!

Don’t overvalue it. The Braves are 1-2 vs Oakland this year. No one is writing them off because of it…

Not quite convinced. This is something quite typical in the development of some top-of-the rotation guys, who come in, get guys out with low K rates (Hello Jon Lester, Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke, all very high ceiling guys who optimized their arsenals at the ML level and then started posting above average to elite K rates), make some adjustments and then start striking guys out to complete their development at the ML level. Bello's issues with fastball spin rate and its adverse effect on his slider are fixable. I'd say a mid 3.5 ERA guy who provides innings is his floor, not his ceiling.

Yeah, if our only comps are HOF and HOVG guys, Bello should be amazing.

A bunch of guys would end up HOF or HOVG if they hit their ceilings. But as you know, that's not usually what happens. Bello's framework and tools for being a great starter are there, health permitting. But is he coachable? Will he take well to trying to improve his fastball? How healthy is his arm? Lots of questions.

Would you give him an extension today? If so, how much?

The Brewers are in first place, despite being swept by the A's 3-0.

Tough call with such a small sample size. I'd lean towards a YES.

I'm terrible at projecting longer term deal amounts, especially for pre-arb players.

i won't write them off until they are officially eliminated. it's just frustrating that we missed such an excellent opportunity to gain ground. maybe we'll sweep the Braves. LOL.

No, I would not. I would negotiate as he enters arb.
