Right, I'm sure they wouldn't be asking for much...:D

Probably Whitlock, Mayer and Casas would not be enough. Adding Bleis might not even be enough.

BTV says Mayer and Rafaela straight up is acceptable. Or Bello, Rafaela and Bleis…

Why would we trade all those pro spects, when we already have Juan Soto (according to Adam Jones).

You can never have too many Juan Soto’s. Unless you’re the team accountant…

Posted
Absolutely!!!! Wouldn’t you?

Not either.

We'd end up paying FA market price for Soto, assuming we extend him, of else why trade?

I'd rather we just sign him as a FA, whenever he becomes one. Even then, I'm not sure I'd want us to pay what it takes.

You're only getting 2 guaranteed years of him, is a problem. And another, from the Red Sox perspective, is that he can't pitch.

With 2 Sotos and a Devers, who need it?

How many guaranteed years do you get from Mayer and Rafaela?

Well, technically, Soto could get hurt and give zero.

Not accounting for injury, since no player is immune. But I think Mayer and Rafaela have another albeit unlikely possibility in not making MLB. And another possibility of making it in a non-impact capacity.

Soto is a known monster…

I get your point.

My point is that we will have to pay the largest contract in MLB history and give up 2 of our best prospects to do it.

No thanks.

For just 2 years? Double no thanks.

I can understand that viewpoint. It worked with mixed results when we did the exact same thing to acquire Sale…

Sale was making bargain basement salaries for 3 years (2017-2019): $12M, $12.5M and $15M. Price signed for $217M/7 during this stretch, and Sale was better.

A better comp would be the Kimbrel trade. He was making FAmoney, at the time, and we gave up 4 prospects for him, 2 of whom were pretty highly ranked on SP near the time of the Nov 15, 2015 trade:

4. Margot Oct '15

6. Guerra Oct '15

13. Logan Allen Oct '15

NR. Carlos Asuage

By the time the Sox got Sale, he was making $12-15 mill per year, but on a lower ASV.

Soto is making $23mill this year. For Soto, that is a far, far cry from free agent money. That’s only free agent money if you’re Trevor Story…

I guess it’s closer than I thought, but 3 yrs of Sale vs 1 of Soto and the AAV difference is still significant.

Two years of Soto.

AAV would still be more though…

Soto would be great, but not the Red Sox without legitimate starting pitching the next two years.

If I'm trading my top prospects, then I have to get top starters -- like Beckett for Hanley, or Sale for Moncada/Kopech.

Then try to sign Soto when he's a free agent; you're going to have to, anyway, if you're willing to trade your future for him...

I was gonna say, your proposal is straight out of the DD playbook.

The 2017 Sox were more in a window of contention than the 2023 Sox, though.

The 4th window opens in 2023.

1. 2003-2007 (The glory days)

2. 2013 (I know, tiny window.)

3. 2016-2018 (shoulda been 2019, too)

4. 2023- ???

If that's true, the Sox would be acquiring foundational starting pitching this year.

If not, the shades may be drawn, but no sash is raised.

Sale, Paxton and Kluber!!
