Pitching projections (I am not counting MLB players slotted for rehab assignments on opening day:)

AAA SP'ers:

Bello will almost certainly get a promotion to MLB at some point.

Mata should see ML action in '23.

Walter should, too.

Murphy might get a look- maybe in the pen.

Gudino should not. (Santos on IL)

AAA RP'ers

Ort may see time

Mosqueda may not

Shugart, Dermody, Feltman- and others hopefully will not, unless they are doing well.

AA

SP: Drohan should move up when a AAA SP'er is promoted. Van Belle, Liu, Sharp and Olds do not impress me.

RP: Denlinger is the unknown. Zeferjahn, Webb and Cellucci may move up to AAA.

A+

SP: Wikelman & Uberstine (to AA?) Angel Bastardo and Juan Encarnacion (maybe?) Dobbins & Gambrell (Beni trade) are long shots

RP: Guerrero is promising

A-

SP: Perales and E R-C could certainly move to A+ or even AA by season's end. Paez and Rogers might be promoted.

RP: Hoppe & Sena (who knows?)

Note: I am far from an expert on prospect evaluation. These are just my opinions.

Has our minor league pitching system ever looked so pathetic????

Has our minor league pitching system ever looked so pathetic????

2017

The pitching was headlined by Jay Groome, who would throw 55 IP that year followed by 4 IP total over the next two years. In early 2017, the pitchers after Groome were named like Lakins, Johnson, and Shawaryn…

Has our minor league pitching system ever looked so pathetic????

YES! From 2 to maybe 10 years ago!

Since Lester in 2005, Papelbon in 2006 and Buch in 2007, we've had very little to get excited about. The few we had were traded away (Masterson, Kelly, Espinoza, Kopech), got hurt (Groome & others), fizzled out (Bowden, Ranaudo, Owens, Johnson, DHern) or 2 or 3 of the above.

If you want to count Masterson or Bard (2008-2009) or Barnes (2012-2013,) fine, but since then, we've only seen Houck and the Rule 5 guy, Whitlock, make an impact. One can say Whitlock was not a product of our farm, since he never pitched on the farm, except for rehabs.

Whitlock, Houck and Bello have graduated from 2021-2022. That's the best we've seen in a very long time, but the 8 years prior to that were god-awful.

Here is a list of those 8 years top ranked pitching prospects all together:

(Highest ranking on soxprospects.com from 2013, when Barnes graduated to 2020, when Houck was promoted.)

1 ERod (acquired and not really a product of our farm- only pitched 85 IP in Sox minors before call-up))

2 Owens

2 Espinoza (traded)

2 DHern

3 Webster (acquired)

5 Kopech (traded)

5 Ruby de la Rosa (acquired)

6 Ranaudo

6 Johnson

9 T Ball

9 Workman

9 T Lakins

10 Beeks (traded)

11 Drake Britton

13 Logan Allen (traded)

One can argue, looking at the results of the list above, and not counting ERod, Webster & RDLR, our current pitching prospect list is pretty close to as good, than that whole 8 year period combined turned out to be. If we could count Bello, it would be even closer, IMO.

(Bello)

Mata

Walter

Perales

Murphy

Wikelman

E R-C

Drohan

Kelly

Fernandez

Paez

Guerrero, Uberstine, Denlinger, Dean, Rogers, J Encarnacion, Broadway, Bastardo, Olds, Dobbins, Shugart, Santos

A little Red Sox prospects news:

Ceddanne Rafaela will begin the 2023 MiLB season in Double-A Portland.

@SPChrisHatfield

Almost speculated this earlier (and if our website editing access weren't down, we'd have updated this projection last night), as he didn't head north with the Worcester guys this weekend.

Camp showed he still has plenty to work on. Meanwhile, crowded group in Worcester.

AAA Opening Day Roster has been posted.

Some interesting bits to note:

Abreu in AAA (was projected at one point for AA)

No Christian Koss?

Whitlock gets Opening Day start

Rafaela is in AA

Mosqueda listed on roster (some projected he would get Ort's bullpen slot)

Sherriff is in AAA

Not a shock. Rafaela has work to do. We also know that lately - in general - the team's best prospects have not spent much time in AAA anyway.

For now? They can always make a change tonight if they need to.

$11,000> $27,300 A+

It's still not good - but full season players are being paid enough to live more or less.

Agreed.

It was shocking, to me, to see what these guys have been being paid.

A bunch of busted prospects. The MLB team can't expect any help from that collection.

We might get more help from AA, but maybe Valdez or Bobby Dee give us something. D Hamilton might bring only speed to the big club, this year.

The WOO rotation looks to be more promising:

Whitlock (opening day SP on rehab), Mata (6), Walter (8), Murphy (13) and Gudino.

Dalbec and Valdez might provide some help.

Although we should not ask Valdez to play defense. He is a menace on the field.

Only the top 4 are even eligible.

And all AAA teams are loaded with borderline veterans. AAA ball is barely considered the farm anymore…

We already have a few AAA players on the 26, due to injuries.

A fully healthy team would be:

Sale, Kluber, Paxton, Whitlock, Pivetta

Jansen, Houck, Martin, Schreiber, Rodriguez, Brasier, Bleier, Ort

McGuire, Wong, Casas, Arroyo, Mondesi, Kike, Devers, Story

Yoshida, Duvall, Verdugo, Refsnyder, Turner

That would leave ML-ready talent in AAA as...

40 Man Roster Only

Bello, Mata, Walter, Murphy

Crawford, Winckowski

Kelly, Mills

Dalbec, Valdez, Chang, Hamilton, Tapia, Duran, Abreu & Rafaela (AA)

Others not on the 40:

SP: Gudino

RP: Sheriff, Mosqueda, Shugart, Dermody, Fernandez (AA)

C: Alfaro, RHern, CHamilton

1B: Kavadas (AA)

2B: Sogard, Yorke (AA 2024)

3B: Goodrum, Lugo (AA)

SS: Fitzy, Koss (AA)

OF: Allen, Crook, Wilson, Sikes (AA)

This is not as bad as the AAA team we have, now, looks.

In fairness to Walter, four ground balls made it out of the infield.

I think he'll right the ship, and we'll see him in the bigs, at some point, this year.

But Caleb Hamilton's CERA!!! I thought he was supposed to be a good defensive catcher?

Time will tell. Maybe, they got their numbers wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

I'm still hopeful they got their guy.

Dalbec has started at 3B, SS and 1B in WOO.

WOO Manager:

“For right now, he’ll play mostly in the infield, but I told him, for the time being, when you’re done in the infield and you’re feeling good, get out and shag some fly balls at the corner outfield spots,” Tracy said. “We’re trying to maximize his ability so he’s able to play different spots. For now we’ll toy with him getting reps and getting balls off the bat and getting used to reads in the corner, and we’ll see where it’s at as far as games there.”

He's also wearing prescription glasses while hitting now.

I'd like to see him get more OF play.

I hope the glasses help.

Had Jim Ed wore glasses, maybe his career would have been extended.

WOOSox game in Buffalo postponed due to bad field conditions. Bison's tarp ripped this weekend. They were gifted a secondary tarp by the Rochester Red Wings, but last night's rainwater leaked through it.
