I just think it's very unfair for teams not to be able to play at full strength because of vaccination status. Give the Jays the same 'penalty', regardless of vaccination status, to make things more fair.

I don't disagree with your view. But there are those who think there should be a penalty for not being vaccinated...

Those teams choose not to play at full strength. Whit Merrifield even said he’d get vaccinated “for a contender.”

I don't think it's correct to say the teams choose. It comes down to the individual players. Teams can't make them do it.

That kind of makes Merrifield a jerk, I'd say...

Well, without making this any more political than it already is, I disagree with penalizing those who choose not to get vaccinated. Or more accurately, I disagree with penalizing the team for a decision that isn't theirs.

No, it's really not the team's choice. They might have some control over the decision when signing new players, like Story, but not with players already on their rosters.

The team collectively itself does not choose. But the individual players on each team do. The point is there is no reason to punish the Blue Jays just because random players on other teams refuse to take proper preparations for this visit.

And Whit Merrifield just added a whole new layer to this that can be interpreted multiple ways…

It’s not a penalty. These are people who fail to meet admission requirements for the country. Those same requirements apply to everyone and not just visiting ball players - accountants, biologists, chefs, all the way up through zydeco musicians…

I think that's a pretty jerky stance by Merrifield. I don't care enough about my present team to get vaxed, but trade me to a contender and I will? Boy, that's real principles for ya...

That was my first impression.

But I also wondered if he wasn’t protesting their annual dedication to a low payroll. Sort of “if you’re not going to make an effort to field a team, I’m not making every effort to play in every city” type thing…

@JeffPassan

An alleged serial burglar stole more than $650,000 of jewelry from Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco’s car in June, according to court and police records obtained by me and @pinepaula. Nearly $550,000 worth has not been recovered.

Strong Manny losing his diamond earing in Pawtucket vibes.

It's his fault. He must have been doing the Mitch Hedberg "I can't tell you what hotel I'm stayin' in, but I can say that there are two trees involved. They said, "Let's call this hotel "Something...Tree", so they had a meeting; it...it was quite short. "How 'bout Tree?" "No, Double Tree." "Hell yeah! Meeting adjourned!" I had my heart set on "Quadruple Tree"... damnit, we were almost there!" joke.

On the no-vax front, this one is a beauty.

St. Louis plays in Toronto the next 2 nights. They have 3 unvaxed players.

2 of them are Goldschmidt (5.3 bWAR) and Arenado (5.1 bWAR).

This just seems so unfair to me. We will never know how many games might have had different outcomes if the visiting teams had been playing at full strength, but it could be the difference between the Jays making the playoffs or not. Imagine if by some off chance the Cards and the Jays meet in the WS and the Cards have to play without 2 of their best players.

Players were informed of this in ST. They made their choice.

Guys, I have a general baseball question:

Quite often a hitter comes to the plate and takes the first pitch, a strike down the middle of the plate. I am watching at home and say to myself: "Wow that was such a nice pitch to hit".

Then the second pitch is one foot outside the plate and the batter swings missing the ball by 8 inches.

Why is this so common?

Many batters almost always take the first pitch to gauge the pitcher's motion, release point and other factors.

I don't think they decide to swing at the second pitch before it is released, but sometimes it seems that way.

That makes sense.

Another one that frustrates me is a long a bat after the count is 3-2. Fouling multiple pitches off the plate and then suddenly taking one down the middle with no swing.

I guess the pitch catches the hitter by surprise. Bobby Daulbec is an expert doing this.

@BaseballValues

The #BlueJays have reportedly acquired RHPs Anthony Bass ($1.4M median trade value) and Zach Pop ($0.1M) and a PTBNL (unknown) from the #Marlins in exchange for IF Jordan Groshans ($12.9M).

The deal is rejected by our model as an overpay by Toronto.

BTV is just not good at the deadline.

Tatis suspended for 80 games.

LOL

And with only 12 years and some $320 mill left on that contract.

I bet they will try to move him this off-season. Try being the key word…

I don’t think so. He’s only 23, and his value is at an all time low.

Makes me wonder, if he's done it before, and that was part of the reason he started out so well.

I hope not, that's about all I can say.

Preller is scolding him in the media, which is unusual.

Tatis has a lot of work to do now.

Well, that’s not to say it couldn’t get lower.

And at some point they will need to free up some cash. They can’t have over $1billion tied up in three players if/when they extend Soto, can they?
