@ChrisCotillo

This story is updated with Alex Cora saying the Red Sox will be missing multiple players in Toronto. Identities of others unknown.

Believe most, if not all, key offensive players will be available. Eovaldi, Pivetta definitely, too. As of now, Houck is only known one (Sale on IL)

Chris Cotillo is not a reliable source though.

I'm surprised the list of players that stayed home hasn't been leaked yet. They'll have to announce at some point today.

I thought today was the first game in Toronto. Ooops. Still at Fenway for now.

Catching prospect Ronaldo Hernández will be joining the Red Sox tomorrow. Why? It's currently unclear. But there's the possibility -- and perhaps a fear -- that the club's COVID issues don't end with Kevin Plawecki.

It's one thing to say you're going to stand on your principles and sacrifice a few day's pay when you're making $716,000 dollars a year, but it's another thing to do it when you're working for $30,000/year.

Money can be a great motivator. When one doesn't need money they can afford do things they wouldn't do if they were working for minimum wage. (Not that I'm suggesting that baseball players should get minimum wage - there's a certain amount of hyperbole in what I posted, but the point is the same.)

And then there's Trevor Story, who had to agree to get vaxxed as a condition of signing a $140 million deal.

Money spoke VERY loudly there.

He'll be off the roster for 10 games this season. He's due to lose $44,198.

The bigger loss is that if the Sox are in contention, he'll miss games on 9/30, 10/1 and 10/2. Not ideal!

Hear, hear!!!

I have always felt that baseball players are the dumbest (or stubbornest) athletes around.

So… Vazquez or Wong?

They need a back-up catcher, and maybe they just like RHern better than Wong, at this point in time.

I'm not sure calling up RHern has any deeper meaning.

MVP has been slipping, of late.

I doubt they're significantly dumber than football, basketball or hockey players.

What did I slip on exactly?

It was reported yesterday that Wong was coming up. It is now being reported that Ronaldo Hernandez is also coming up.

1. Nomar had the best 4 year stretch since yaz.

2. The Sox were playing in Toronto, tonight.

I could look back and find more, if you wish.

I know it's nit-picking, but I felt since that's your favorite pastime, maybe you'd like this.

The NBA will always be in the running as long as Kyrie Irving is still active.

I will put this out there - I bet MLB gets more grads/alum from Ivy League schools than the NFL and NBA. I have no data to back this up, however…

So are they both coming up? If so, that probably means Vazquez was exposed….

Vazquez and Arauz both out with COVID.

Refsnyder to join Hernandez in Boston.

The Rob Refsnyder Era begins…

My vote goes unhesitatingly to NFL players. They play a sport that has been proven to significantly reduce life expectancy...

Five former Ivy League players have seen MLB action this season: Brent Suter and Sean Poppen from Harvard, Kyle Hendricks and Cole Sulser from Dartmouth and Jake Cousins from Penn.

According to one source, the NBA currently has one former Ivy League player in Devin Cannady from Princeton

As of January 2021, 13 former Ivy League players were in the NFL, according to another source:

@DeeshaThosar

From a person with knowledge of MLB rules regarding return of players on COVID IL:

Any player, regardless of vaccinated status, can technically return earlier than 10 days if they test negative on PCR tests.

WAR -- Wins Above Refsnyder. Kind of catchy , if a bit insulting.

It replaces the old WAFL - Wins Above Felipe Lopez…

That website maybe isn’t trustworthy in that it lists Penn State as an Ivy League school.

Penn State is in the Big 10 and is a state school. University of Pennsylvania - a completely different school - is in the Ivy League, and is not a state school but a private institution.

Yes, there's a direct correlation between the two.

Duly noted but the three players listed played for Penn, not Penn State (the latter has filled the NFL with many players).

The Seattle Mariners have called up first baseman Mike Ford, who played collegiately at Princeton with the son of Seattle manager Scott Servais.
