Agreed. But do you think Bogey was reciting a rehearsed line fed by Boras, reminding that his biggest market value will always be as a shortstop?

There’s always a bigger market for team players. A lot of teams already have shortstops, and no one will be signing Bogaerts for his glove.

The Sox offered Story more than the reported offer to X. Team player aspect matter? Maybe…

I thought the Bogey contract talk on the bullpen thread had dried up yesterday, but wow it started up again. The only thing I want to add is that no one knows what JH is thinking, or Bloom is thinking, or what Bogey, and Boris is thinking. Everything on here is speculation, and opinions by everybody. I do wonder though why people on here wonder why Bogey would not consider himself a SS, and he’s just reciting a line from Boris saying so. I believe Bogey saying he’s a SS is all coming from Bogey himself, because that’s the way he feels about himself, and has nothing to do with Boris. Once again my opinion, and speculation on my part.

Come July, does Hang’em Chaim trade bogey? I’m sure Hang’em Chaim can get a sweet deal from at least one the plethora of teams lining up to pay bogey 30 million a year!

I agree that Bloom probably values defense more than many fans do. I'm still not convinced that the offer was accurate, but maybe. Regardless of Bogey's poor defense, I think the offer, if true, is a slap in the face.

I am wondering what impact, if any, Bogey's seeming unwillingness to move off of SS has on negotiations with him. In an interview before Story was signed, when asked about the possibility of changing positions, Bogey's response was "I'm a shortstop", when it should have been "I'll do whatever the team needs me to do."

That rubbed me the wrong way, too.

I have been thinking they are setting Bogey up to agree to waive his no trade clause at the deadline.

It need not be to a team looking to keep him, large and long. It just needs to be a team he agrees to waive his no trade contract to go to.

Bogaerts won’t command an elite return at the deadline because of his limited control, but unless the Sox are out of it, he’d be more valuable to Boston. Unless Jeter Downs somehow becomes someone who just forced his way into the lineup…

What is an elite return?

Some teams pay a lot for 2 month rentals they think can put them over the top.

We got Pivetta and Seabold for 2 months of Workman & Hembree.

We got ERod for 2 moths of Andrew Miller.

There are worse examples, for sure, but we should get something pretty nice. If we end up trading Bogey, do we go all out and trade Big Nate and JD, too?

Only if we're out of it.

1.) downs has looked over matched in the first week of the season.

2.) the replacement for bogey is already on the roster.

Currently at second base.

3.) Fitzgerald and arroyo could take over at second once bogey is traded, there would be a spit on the 40 man roster to put Fitzgerald,

I hope we're not going to have the discussion again about trading guys at the deadline when we're still in contention.

It's pretty simple. If you're out of it you trade guys with expiring contracts. If you're still in it you don't.

Probably, yes, but we did trade Nomar in the heat of a ring run.

That was VERY different, because he was hurting us with his lousy D and attitude, and it was a trade to upgrade.

Anything that improves your team is something that must be evaluated.

We have an obvious surplus at short, a chance to improve the defense at short and a monster hole in the bullpen.

Many said, "Orlando who?"

But, yes, we did not trade him for prospects or a good player with more than 2 months of team control.

If Arroyo, Fitzy and Downs & Co are not doing well by the deadline, we might think of trading Bogey for a CF/RF'er and put Kike at 2B and Story at SS.

Hang’em Chaim loves versatility!

Isn’t that super utility guy from rice university unsigned somewhere?

I think Kike, Arroyo & Fitzy are all we will see for this season.

Plus we have a SS playing 2B.

The way everyone is talking it sounds like everyone is expecting the Red Sox to be out of playoff contention, so might as well trade everyone. Well if that’s the case then let’s do it right, and trade Raffy too. 9 games into the season, and all the trade talk already. WOW! And then of course everyone is just assuming Bogey will wave his NO TRADE. That is a lot of assumptions. Once again Wow! Glad the Celtics are on, because there ain’t no sense watching this team anymore.

I have no idea where that statement was coming from. He seemed a little put off when he was asked to play 3rd base when Stephen Drew was re-signed many years ago. I get the sense that Bogaerts really doesn't want to move to another position. I can certainly understand why, but I would still prefer the team first mentality.

I found it interesting a few games ago when Bogaerts was out of the line up for a regular rest day. Cora chose to put Arroyo at SS and leave Story at 2B. The announcers said that Cora did this so that Story could focus solely on playing second, rather than being moved between two positions. That is a perfectly reasonable explanation, but I wonder if part of that decision was also based on the idea of not creating any kind of controversy over who the SS is.

If the offer that has been reported is in fact true, that might be the case.

The Sox won't trade him if they are in contention though.

Assuming the Sox are in contention at the deadline, they are unlikely to trade Bogaerts regardless of whether or not they plan on signing him.

Correct.

The Sox would have to be blown away with a deal that they just couldn't refuse in order to trade a player like Bogaerts when they're still in contention.

1) I did work "Somehow" into my statement about Downs.

2) So who replaces Story? Will he be playing both 2B and SS?

3) Unlike Fitzy, Downs in already on the 40 man. And if (a very unlikely if) they deal Bogaerts and give his 40 man spot to Fitzy, what do they do with whatever they got for Bogaert? E-Bay?

Hang’em Chaim is going to want some high value prospects. Whatever team gets bogey is going for it all so it is doubtful they part with much off their current roster.

That would be very surprising, but with Bogey's no-trade clause, they'd need him to okay a trade, either way, and maybe this posturing made that an easier aspect of the idea.

Arroyo or Kike or Fitzy.
