And the sox hold the distinction of having the highest payroll to ever finish in last place......

What year did that happen? My guess is that it happened under Ben Cherrington, he had a habit of spending money recklessly in free agency. I don't think it matters all that much--whatever year you are talking about, the Red Sox probably decided to tank at some point and traded off assets.

No team will ever top the 2004 Yankees--what a legendary team, the biggest chokers in the history of sports!!!

I guess Red Sox fans are forced to live in the past now as well. 27 championships baby!!

You made the mistake of believing JD and assuming he tells truths.

The Sox were #1 in payroll in 2018 & 2019, when we finished 1st and 3rd. That's it.

We finished 2nd in spending in ...

2001-2002

2004-2007

2010

We finished in last place in...

1992 (unknown)

2012 (3rd in spending)

2014 (4th in spending)

2015 (3rd in spending)

2020 (3rd in spending)

Unfortunately I think his statement is correct. It's "which last place team had the highest payroll"? Probably the 2015 Sox hold that distinction.

The only problem with that is that the more divisions there are, the easier it is to fall into last place. Also, the Sox won 78 games that year, not really what you think of when you envision a last place team. There were 4 teams in the AL worse than the Sox. There were 7 NL teams that had a worse record than the Sox.

The 2004 Yankees do deserve some level of ignominy, but it's been 18 years at this point. It's like the 1918 chants and Bill Buckner stuff. At some point, it doesn't resonate with me anymore. I believe the Mariners fans, those that actually exist anyway, have suffered enough.

27 WS doesn't matter. It's not even the real Yankee Stadium anymore. The WC game last year was fun, but this rivalry is just kind of played out IMO.

Not according to some sources, and are we talking opening day payroll, end of year payroll and should it be both.

This site has us 3rd in 2015, almost $90M from 1st:

You're mis-reading what the statement is saying.

Out of all the last place teams in the history of MLB, which one had the highest payroll? Not the highest payroll in baseball that year, but the highest of all these last place teams.

OK. Got it.

I'm a bit distracted, lately.

I guess that distinction does not bother me, at all.

Then, when you add the context of winning a ring 2 years prior to 2015 and 3 years after 2015, it's even easier for anyone to shrug off.

Correct, next time I will type slower so maybe moon can follow along. It seems that reading is not fundamental in his household.

Gotta love the moxie. Stinks an infield hit walked us off. So be it. Intrigued by German, but man did they pick the wrong opponent.

Moxie and a dollar will get you a Lotto ticket.

The astros are going to pass the Yanks for best record in the AL. If the Yanks don't add some lefty bats and/or figure out how to hit the astros pitching their season will end in minutemaid park once again.

What really did them in was not scoring with bases loaded and 0 outs earlier in the game. Granted they had a line drive double play and a lineout so it was bad luck, but that was their only real chance to put up multiple runs in the game. IKF's game tying single had a .100 xBA so can't really complain about the Astros weak grounder to win it.

This has been the theme overall against the Stros this season though (and in our previous playoff losses). The pitching does its job but then the offense is held down by whoever they have on the mound. Even the two wins this year were kind of fluky walk-offs where the offense was getting dominated most of the game.

Spot on.

The decision to start German, who is freshly off the IL, against this Astros team is what I would question more. They could've started Taillon or Nestor on regular rest, and then pitched German against the O's instead.

Makes no sense as well if this was his stuff in the minors. German was effective mid 90s. 91-92 is meat. He couldn’t locate the breaking ball either, but that fastball isn’t gonna cut it. I’d rather they gone Schmidt-Sears. German’s time is up

Should have kept Frank.

Starting German against the Astros was odd, and so was sitting Stanton, DJ and Rizzo each for one game. Almost as if they weren't treating these as big games.

The Yankees need no sympathy, but I must say it's almost comically bad scheduling luck to come out of the All-Star Break with a doubleheader in Houston.

Some of you have proposed MORE doubleheaders.

That wasn't me. I know a lot of this year's DH's are because of the late start.

I have but only if we expand the roster size to 28 or more.

I'm fine with an expanded roster to 30. Just limit that total amount of pitchers that can go or the amount of pitchers that can be used per 9 inning game.
