Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe in trade involving Jackie Bradley Jr

The solution might eventually be to just play JBJ every day. It’s not like they acquired him for his bat…

If JBJ plays every day , he will have his hot streaks with the bat. That has been his history.

Perhaps he tried, but it’s a bit hard to deal Renfroe for an upgrade over Renfroe without taking on even more money…

They could have traded Renfroe for peanuts and just signed Suzuki for less than JBJ is making per year.

Please explain how? Suzuki is making $17 mill * 5.

Suzuki is making $7M, this year. JBJ is making $9.5. I wasn't talking long term, that's why I said per year, meaning this season.

It's close if looking at lux tax: JBJ is making $12M this year with an $8M buyout for '23.

We will likely keep him for 2023 at $12M, so I guess I should not count the $8M as spent for 2022.

I should have been more specific.

Suzuki also got a $5M signing bonus this year.

But the AAV is surely the most important thing. Suzuki's is $17 mill, JBJ's is $12 mill.

Of course if we had not dealt for Bradley, we’d still have Renfroe’s salary ($7.7 milll this year) too…

Did not have to. It was an arb, and I'm sure we could have traded him for a non 40 man roster prospect, alone.

I had actually thought Suzuki got 5/$70, not 5/$85, until I looked it up.

I did, too, because I remember he got JD Drew money (before inflation).

Or just non-tendered him. But I liked this deal when it was made and think it will work out just fine in the long and short runs…

I'm watching Hamilton & Binelas closely.

I liked the idea of upgrading the defense, but I did not view RF as even bottom 3 defensive position, last year.

You know, us accountants are known for being wordsmiths.

And naturally, I'm perusing the box scores this morning to find that the Phils have a reliever named Bailey Falter.

Unfortunate last name for a reliever.

He’s been around. I’m pretty sure I mentioned him at some point in the long dormant “Fun with Baseball Names” thread…

Suzuki cost roughly half of Story. But Story had an MLB track record. But then it was a Coors Field track record.

I’d have preferred Suzuki, partially because it made te Arroyo/Bradley platoon better defensively…

Suzuki seemed to be the position player that made the most sense in the offseason. I am still surprised that we did not pick up another outfielder. Even if JBJ hits well and does not need to be platooned, we need a 4th outfielder not named JD who has actually played some outfield. Arroyo might get there with some more reps, but right now he scares me out there.

I'd be more concerned if he had a high k rate. He's making contact, it's just not great contact right now. We've seen times when he looked lost up there. I don't see that with him right now.

Go oppo, JBJ, go oppo. It seems that his hot streaks came when he was hitting the ball to the opposite field rather than trying to pull.

Based on what I have read about the starts that the two prospects gotten in the trade that brought JBJ back to Boston, I feel fairly safe in saying that Bradley was a somewhat small piece in this puzzle. he is what he is, but the two we got in the trade both have come out on fire.

I honestly have not followed the 2 prospects at all (I don't even remember their names), but I never believed the trade was about getting JBJ back. It was about the prospects. Whatever JBJ gives the team is gravy.

There were a couple points that do make me disagree with this.

1. The team defense last year was, to be kind, subpar. Bradley absolutely helps there.

2. Bradley had an insanely low BABIP relative to his batted ball profile. His line drive rate was one of the best of his career, for example. There was evidence of a lot of bad luck on his part…

Hamilton and Binelas are both off to great starts in very limited sample sizes.

Binelas with more walks than strikeouts thus far on the season.

So does Hamilton.

Speaking of K's, Downs has 15 in 27 ABs.

Cordero 12 in 34 ABs.

Yes. This can be a win-win. The idea that Bradley has no potential value is kind of absurd.

Downs is a lost cause IMO.

It all comes down to the idea that his defense will outweigh his poor offense to become a net plus.

Of course. There's also the chance that if he can apply a better approach with the bat he could at least hit that .700 OPS mark.

Yes, certainly there is a significant chance he ends up as a net plus, even if his defense may slip a little as he ages.

The question is, what does he have to hit to break even (or out net Renfroe?)

.625?

.650?

.675?

.700?
