Correct me if I am wrong (and I'm sure some will). If the Yankees lose today and RedSox complete a sweep of Nationals, then no matter what the Yankees do Sunday , the WC game goes to Fenway where we have 6 outs to use after the top of the 8th finishes. Kind of reminds me of '78 .

That’s correct also the blues jays can make the playoffs with a sweep this weekend and the rays sweeping the yankees. Welp I forgot about the mariners.

TBD vs Gray

Cora is still working on who will go later today.

Gray is a good prospect but very beatable.

Will Cora dare to through that Wednesday night beer league softball OF out there again?!?

Houck was/is the inevitable choice for today. He was the last starter sent to the bullpen, and he is better these days than Richards or Perez.

Starting Sale a day early makes little sense because tomorrow's game is just as important.

Today once again is going with his eight best bats in a NL park although Verdugo is getting the nod over Dalbec--lefty hitter vs. Nats righty starter. That said, only three Sox lefty bats out of 8 position players. JDM in RF makes sense because, while he doesn't have much range, he does have a pretty good arm. Renfroe's is even better in CF. So Verdugo gets LF.

The weird thing about Houck is that he does not have a big repertoire--mostly 4 seamer and slider with occasional cut fastball and/or splitter--but he also doesn't have great command.

It's fine to disagree with how Sale was used upon his return. I think I remember a poster or two thought we should just not pitch him at all, this year- something I did not support.

We brought him back slowly and might have even made sure he faced easier opponents his first 3 starts.

After his first start (5 IP), he was given an extra day's rest.

After his second start (5 IP), another extra day's rest.

After his third start, again another extra day off.

Then, he started vs TBR twice, with just normal rest between, but after his 6 IP in the first game, he only lasted to the 4th in the first game he started without an extra day's rest. Call that overanalyzing, and maybe it is, but it is a fact.

Then COVID, and he got 11 days "off."

Start 6 (5 IP) followed by start 7 on normal rest (5 IP, 6 H, 2BB, 2 ER).

His last start came with an extra day's rest and he went into the 6th on 85 pitches.

I'm just curious on what here points to why he looks ready to pitch on short rest. He's only started on normal rest, twice this year and 6 times with extra rest.

I know it's a big game, and throwing caution to the wind is often a strategy team's use, but we need an arm Sunday, too, so I'm not sensing the great need for him to go Saturday and not Sunday.

Also, pitching Sale, today would force Eovaldi to start on short rest, tomorrow with no Sale in the pen.

True, under various scenarios the WC game could be with Jays or Yankees, but in any case at Fenway . One critical element is the Red Sox winning two games in the immediate future. The Orioles series and the Yankees one before that where the boys lost 5 of 6 still smells like a huge steaming pile of manure

Getting hyped for the SOX game by listening to TIM by The Replacements. A great band that was drunk more than they were sober. And even drunk, they could outplay most sober bands.

A great line from one of their songs "Jesus rides beside me, but he never buys any smokes."

Freaking Rays are relentless. They are set, but just can't help hammering the Yankees.

And the Jays, home at last, are doing the same to the Orioles, the very same team that just took 2 of 3 from our Sox.

Looks like the Yankees might have to go with gerrit cole tomorrow.

Love to see Cole get burned up, so he is not available if the Yanks make it to Fenway

Overkill. No one with any sense would argue starting Sale today when tomorrow is just as important. And, should the Sox get to the postseason, the wild card game just might be important too.

It doesn't even take analyzing anything to see that, let alone overanalyzing.

The jays are not playing around. That’s how we should come out. Need to take a lead and the offense has to dictate early.

I guess the Jays were NOT Means tested.

Means went all of 2 innings, 6 H, 6R, 3HR's. He was only "mean" to the Sox.

Rays being the Yank's daddy, up 12-2 in the 7th. Makes feel so bad for Sterling and Waldman having to suck that tailpipe

Lowe with 3 HR's and 7 rbi's

Have to take care of business today. I don’t know much about this nationals pitcher.

If motivation means the same as clutch, momentum, and trending to the Sox as it does to us, the players should have it today with a chance to tie the Yankees going into #162 tomorrow. Can they suck it up and do it ? About to find out.

Spoiler Alert: motivation hasn't worked for them much lately. Must be a trend

Well, finally, we face a righty.

Watch Devers and Scwarbs go nutty!

Must wins are mostly losses (for everybody).
