Yanks traded Cessa & J Wilson to free up some money and 2 roster spots. Still hard to know, if they're buyers or sellers.

The Mariners traded for Tyler Anderson, a good SP'er.

SOX:

3rd in OPS (better than Dodgers)

6th in Reliever ERA (better than Dodgers)

Okay, well, the Dodgers have to put a pitcher in their line-up and ERA is one of the worst stats for valuing a pen. (We do have a better pen by other numbers, too.)

Runs scored

551 HOU

526 LAD (with a pitcher batting)

514 BOS

502 CWS

498 SDP (pitcher batting)

497 TBR

"Absolutely?"

Have you looked at the Dodger & Padres' rosters?

Plus both have already and will add more pieces, too.

Who did the Dodgers add? And, no, Billy McKinney does not count…

BOS has a pitcher batting AND playing 1B.

We like Bloom because he does not get the Sox into multiple year situations with bad contracts. Look no further than Richards contract. If he fails, okay it cost us $10M for one year. No sweat.

Getting Scherzer as a two month rental also avoids long term deal for an aging pitcher.

So it comes down to how much are we willing to give up for a two months rental?

Moon thinks we have no shot at beating Dodgers, Giants and Padres. Why make ANY improvements then?

On one hand Moon thinks we'll have some difficult decisions when it comes to coming up with our 40 man roster this winter. He's implying that not all prospects are worthy of protection. That means some of them are tradeable. Why wouldn't you use some of them as trading pieces?

Moon is not high on Downs but he thinks we should protect him because of possibility of Xander opting out. But in the past, he's implied shortstop position is easily filled with good defense first types. I think the Sox will re-work his contract. That possibility is as solid as possibility of Xander moving to another team.

I refuse to believe that Scherzer, Sale, Eovaldi, E Rod rotation can't compete with the NL West Coast teams.

Moving JD to left field will allow Kike to play 1B. I would bet that Arroyo would return by playoffs. That's without acquiring a first baseman in next couple of days.

Starting pitching is our weak spot right now within the context of playoff bound teams.

The cost is more than prospects, according to reports that Scherzer is also seeking an extension in order to waive his 10-5 rights to refuse a trade to someplace he'd rather avoid...

I said we won't be faves. We can compete.

I don't think you go all out, until you think you can be the faves.

I know I'm in the minority. I respect other views on this.

He also puts us over the tax line, which may have implications 2-3 years from now.

I'm not a 100% believer in 'playoffs are a crapshoot' either, but you seem to take it to the other extreme.

Playoffs are kind of a crapshoot, but the best teams usually are there at the end.

I just think this is not the time you go blockbuster- especially for a rental.

I loved the Sale deal.

I think we can make a couple trades like we did in 2018, but back then, we were the faves before those trades.

Fine if you can get 2018 Eovaldi and 2018 Pearce.

If we added Jon Gray and Carlos Santana, we'd be the AL Faves, unless HOU or the CWS go nutty at the deadline.

We will have a decent chance against the Dodgers, Padres or Giants, but will not be the faves.

We seem to rise up in the WS, but this team is not the same as 2018.

This is a magical season. I'm not for radically changing things at the expense of an even brighter future.

(Kimmi, where are you? I need some support!)

Carlos Santana may not do what Pearce did, but he only has to hit .750 to blow Dalbec away.

Jon Gray should do better than Richards.

At their peaks, Scherzer-Sale-Eovaldi would make any playoff team a favorite. But not this year; even with a healthy Scherzer, if Sale is allowed to take a regular turn in the rotation the last two months, he will be fitted with ball-and-chainmail, zip ties and Houdini ropes. The Sox won't let him go all out past 5 or 6 innings, which means the biggest need by Friday is...

...a reliable Gumby reliever -- because they undoubtedly have pitch counts or batter limits on Whitlock and Houck, and can't know for sure if a demoted starter like Richards or Perez can even transition to long man coming out of the pen mid-game.

It's still amazing the lack of a penalty that team faced.

Not as much as Richards.

There are others better and not as costly as Scherzer. (That was my point.)

Agreed. They could have stripped them of their title and taken away draft picks.

The evidence was irrefutable they cheated, and so many player players had bust out/outlier seasons.

And the Red Sox cheated in 2018.

Stripping them of the title really does nothing. They already has played, won, celebrated, has a parade, made their money, received bonuses, etc. They already enjoyed all the perks and a pencil mark in the record books wouldn’t change any of that.

But yes, strip them off draft picks or something going forward. The ownership and management has already enjoyed the benefits of winning. Time to make them experience the financial windfall of losing. If all that happens is you fire a GM and a manger - something two teams completely uninvolved in the scandal also did - it’s not exactly a penalty that discourages repeat behavior…
