Speaking of line-ups, and I don't want my opinion to come across as being critical of Cora, I'm wondering about trying to maximize the efficiency of our line-up with just 4 solid hitters that are separated by a wide gulf between them and the rest. The modern line-up theory goes like this:

Best overall hitter second (Bogey)

Next best 4th (JD) or 5th (Devers).

4th best, if he has a decent OB% is is not super slow goes 1st (Verdugo).

Your 5th best hitter goes 4th (Kike or Renfroe or Dalbecvs LHPs)

Best line-up?

1. Verdugo

2. Bogey

3. Kike v R/ Dalbec v L

4. JD

5. Devers

6. Santana v R/ Renfroe v L

7. Vaz v R/ Kike or Santana v L

8. Arroyo v R/ Arroyo, Kike or Santana v L

9. Marwin/Arroyo/Santana/Kike v R Vaz v L

Swap 3 and 5.

Swap 3 and 5.

I agree with getting Devers as many at bats as possible. Batting him in the top 3 guarantees he hits in the first inning of every game, and even though he comes out hacking at everything, he's still the one guy most likely to give Boston an early lead.

I don't understand the new thinking about the top 5 spots in the order... if the best hitter bats second, why wait two more at bats -- and risk two more outs -- for the next-best guy to bat fifth?

I do get the Sox' presumptive logic in batting Devers fifth, after all their other good hitters: 1) more chances of guys on base for him to drive in; 2) he provides protection for JD and Bogie, who both may get better pitches to hit; 3) Rafie doesn't need protection, because opponents know they can't pitch around him and probably don't want to, since he just swings away at almost anything all game.

Exactly. I still don't understand why we do not go Vergugo-Xander-Devers-JD

He's good protection for JD, but I think I'd rather give Devers the protection and use Devers' speed ahead of JD.

I also, don't like Kiké/Dalbec in the 3 hole. Yuck.

It's my preferred lineup.

It seems like a lot of us agree, but what kind of data do the analytics departments use to justify mixing in a low OPS guy in between all the .900 stars?

With all the new statcast stuff, it seems to make more sense to have your best OBP player batting the most amount of times. For the sox, that could be Xander or JD. If I was Cora, I would start your lineup Xander-JDM-Devers-Kike

So obviously you think Judge should be leading off for the Yankees.
