He’s now a FA

I was a bit surprised by this move as the Sox need pitching and he did the job of inning eater and had generally good results with 2 exceptions. What does this mean about the Sox pitching plans going forward? Stay tuned.

The Red Sox are likely to be among the suitors for Martin Perez in free agency. The Sox just didn't like the option price.

Perez is a career ham and egger . He is not going to get any better at this point. You really don't want him in your rotation , even for minimum wage.

The other options may be even less appealing.

Who could reasonably be in the 2021 Red Sox starting rotation?

I am a bit shocked by this move. I felt it was a sure thing we would pick up his option,

Maybe hang’em Chaim has some other plan for our rotation,

Quintana and Lester maybe?

Harm , I'm not sure. Hopefully, E-Rod and Sale are back. Eovaldi and Houck. Maybe sign someone other than Perez. Even a top of the line guy if they are willing to pay. Maybe make Hernandez a starter. Actually, I would rather use an opener and bullpen game than keep some jabroni like Perez as a number 5 starter.

There’s a reason why Hand went unclaimed. If Hand isn’t worth $10 mil in this market, Perez isn’t worth close to 60% of that. There will be a reckoning for all but the very top. Some bargains will be had for sure

Harm, there will be a fairly long list of possibilities when all is said and done.

Charlie Morton, Jon Lester, Rick Porcello have been mentioned. And as others have said, Perez could still be signed as a free agent.

As it turns out, Perez's option was actually for $6.85 million instead of $6.25 million, because of some escalators for innings that he hit - on a pro-rated basis, of course.

Most 4th and 5th starters are ham and eggers.

Perez is better than Lester right now. Lester would be the feel good story on opening day, but it'd get ugly quick.

Morton and Porcello are probably good fits though.

2019 2.8

2020 0.3

Perez

Hand went unclaimed because too many teams are uncertain what 2021 will look like, or even if it is going to happen at all.

The first clue about how teams/players/agents feel about this will be how many Qualifying Offers get accepted. That only 6 offers were made - the lowest amount since the inception of the program - does lean towards this being the case. And I would think a minimum of 2 players - defintely Gausman and Stroman - simply take the offer.

So there may only be 4 players rejecting a QO this off-season...

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Lemahieu accepted his either. 32 yr old looking at maybe a little higher AAV than the QO at $18.9 mil. There is certainly some that will scream collusion, but the GM's job is to read the market. Every indicator points towards a reckoning on player salaries, so every GM is trying to be as flexible as possible

My concern with Lester is that he'll be 37 and his velo is way down. I think it's a trend of him pitching himself out of the league. I think Perez will stick around for another 5 years or so. By "right now" I meant as of today, not back in 2018.

5.1 isn't much better than 2.2?

That averages out to a full WAR per season...

Why won't it happen. They played through the first part of the pandemic. Evidence shows that they really didn't care all that much about the pandemic aside from not having fans in attendance.

All that matters is 2021. Neither of these guys is getting multiple years guaranteed...

Me, big brained poster, think Lester is the same pitcher as he was in 2018. 89 mph FB and 91 mph FB are the same thing!

So then why total the fWARs for the previous 3 seasons?

IMO, Perez will be the better pitcher in 2021 than Lester.
