Why would a trade partner do that?

Few teams are thinner in the starting rotation than the Red Sox.

Maybe the "more durable" pitcher costs more than Eovaldi, if it's a 1-1 trade. Maybe the pitcher isn't as good, but he's more durable.

My idea was actually thinking we'd add money or a player to get a more durable pitcher back, but that's just one way (see previous email).

You’re not gonna deal Eovaldi unless someone takes his entire contract. Dealing a pitcher who, when he takes the mound, is at least somewhat effective makes little sensed the return is a dead contract.

Bloom is a value guy. Eovaldi makes value is low right now. Makes more sense to rehab his value and maybe you can get something useful

Baseball Trade Values approves a trade of Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Benintendi to the Rangers for Lance Lynn and Rouged Odor:

Is that what you had in mind?:(

For a minute there, I thought you said the Sox could deal oft injured Eovaldi and his $17 mil for 2021 plus wrecked Beni for the corpse of Odor and his $24 mil contract over the next two seasons and Lance Lynn, who’s been on of the most durable and effective starters in baseball the last 2 seasons and is under contract at a really reasonable $10 mil for 2021.

All kidding aside, if Beni plus $5 mil is enough for Lynn, then he’d have been dealt last year. That’s a ludicrous proposal and something that renders that site entirely in need of readjustment

Moving on to a different subject, I notice the sox prospects heavily favor the infield and especially 2nd, short and third base. Since we have Devers and Bogaerts blocking the way, it is hard for me to see where these guys will all fit in. On the other hand, we could use additional front line outfield prospects and we can also always use additional pitching prospects.

Might we thin down (trade) some of our infield prospects for positions where we are thin?

What is a better measure of trade value? Perhaps no one is qualified to discuss roster moves.

It's just that the projections are missing information. The projections don't know whether Beni's poor numbers this year resulted from the injury that eventually sidelined him. Things like that.

The projections are raw dumb data. They're not useless by any means, but they're not necessarily the best judge of whether a trade makes sense.

I think Baseball Trade Values is just another of those sites where a couple of pencil neck geeks sit around playing with their computer. But it can be a fun pastime for the wannabe G.M.s out there . Just don't take it too seriously .

Actually they have done a pretty good job fine tuning it in the 1 year plus it's been around, and a lot of actual trades that real life GMs have obviously deemed fair have been valued as being roughly equal using their system...

Did they do an analysis on the Mookie trade?

Did they do an analysis on the Mookie trade?

They did. They actually do analysis of every trade in MLB. In the Mookie trade, the Sox received more value at the time, as Alex Verdugo alone was roughly equal to Mookie due to years of control remaining (along with, you know, Verdugo being pretty good).

But what that site also made obvious was that, despite columns from the MLB.con and Boston Sprotswriter crew, the Sox were absolutely not going to get Dustin May or Gavin Lux. never mind both. Which I believe one of them suggested would be fair.

From what I saw at the deadline this year, every trade I saw the analysis for was actually very close using their simulator...

Now what BTV cannot do is tell you whether or not a GM wants to deal or acquire any specific player. Just because a deal is equal doesn't mean either GM wants to give up or acquire those specific pieces.

But I think it does at least quash some of the absolutely lopsided trade proposals that every baseball internet site has been littered with since the dawn of the Cyber Age...

20 years of Alex Verdugo is not roughly equal to Mookie. Back to work , boys.

These trades go back to sports radio call in shows and much further in our nascent past.

Absolutely true.

Obviously bad trades will still happen. But BTV has given a clearer picture of what players can be worth in trades...

In making assessments, Baseball Trade Values considers the appropriate objective factors (that many fans overlook) but apparently ignores subjective factors.

One can always argue with the value the website assigns to each appropriate objective factor.

Umm ... yes.

So do you think the Sox would have been better off with Betts and a draft pick this year only, followed by a big question mark in RF instead of Verdugo for the next five?
