Extend injury prone pitchers at the expense of the rest of your payroll?

I think they were willing to overlook that part of his methodology..

My opinion, and I'm sticking to it, is that they just didn't want to give Mookie 12 years and 400 million, regardless of any other considerations.

Their risk analyzer spit it out.

Someone didn't, although stories seem to vary about what numbers it would have taken to lock Mookie up...

They love to sign bad contracts and complain about it later (CC, Pablo, Hanley, Eovaldi?, Sale?)

Henry: 300!

Mookie: 400?

Henry: I'm walking out and will no longer negotiate!

Well that hardline stance had some serious implications...

400 million seems a very fair estimate.

The Dodgers signed him for 365, in the midst of a pandemic.

Seems like having a "hardline stance" is not a negotiation for Henry.

And I still think it's likely he signs with the Sox for 365. Maybe he doesn't? We do know that the Sox didn't want to sign him for 365. What difference will that 65M be for the Sox over the next decade? IDK.

Shortly after the cheering stopped in November of 2018 , John Henry started grumbling about spending too much and losing money on the team. That was the writing on the wall . Today , Mookie is happy , rich , loving L.A. and thinking about getting fitted for another ring . We are watching the playoffs from a distance , and crunching payroll numbers to see if we can afford to bring back Kevin Pillar . What a difference two years makes.

I don't remember this. Do you have a link?

From Jan 2019:

“Would we get another reliever? Our budget is below that,” Henry said. “But last year we exceeded our budget and we went into spring training with a $200 (million) budget. We came out of spring training with $230 (million) and I think we closed at $239 or $237 (million), somewhere in that range. So you look at what your needs are and we have constraints, all of us have constraints. But it’s not necessarily the CBT that is your constraint. It’s how much money are you willing to lose.”

The Red Sox lost money in 2018 on an operational basis, industry sources said, which includes payroll and tickets and merchandise and the postseason. It does not include the money NESN makes — and the ownership group also owns NESN — nor the appreciation of the franchise value.”

“Generally, we hope not to,” Henry said. “But I would say more years often than not we probably have. But that's more of a concern I think than the CBT.

So every other team factors in tv deals, but the Sox do not?

With 3 extra post season series to charge tickets for, the Red Sox "lost money" in 2018. I don't buy it.

I think the OP needs to make up his mind. Cora or Bauer?

Given how critical Bauer was about the Astros’ cheating scandal, it is possible bringing back Cora would be an obstacle to signing Bauer. And even if the Sox did sign both, safe bet Bauer is too public and upfront to keep his mouth shut about anything.

I could see signing both as a bad mix.

So.... Cora or Bauer?

Easy decision for me - Cora.

Bauer should only be signed if he'll agree to a 4 year or less deal. And if Bauer would agree to that deal, and we could still only have one, I'm still going with Cora.

I think it was ownership making the call.

I agree. If ownership would have allowed it a blank check, I think Mookie would still be on the Red Sox.

Yes. That's been my point for several years!!

It really makes very little sense to value some of the players the way the Sox did - with Eovaldi being number 1 on that list - and not do the same for Mookie...

No, you can't really compare the two when one is a 4 year deal and the other is a 10+ year deal. Big difference.

If we had signed Mookie, we would likely still be watching the playoffs from a distance, and the Dodgers would likely still be fighting for a ring.

That feels so unlike Dombrowski. The man signs 31yo Miguel Cabrera for 8 guaranteed years (with two options) for roughly $300 mill, but won't go above that number or years for Mookie in his mid-20s?

This is why I won't point fingers at Dombro for signing all those other Sox players and blaming that on the notion Boston "ran out of money" to pay Mookie. When Dave said, "You can't sign them all", I worried he was hinting not all of them wanted to stay here. Unfortunately, it looks like it was the best one...

Maybe. Mookie once again led baseball in WAR, so it's just as likely he would've made the difference in a few more wins. I don't know if it would've been enough, but the Astros finished under .500 and made the postseason... (and suddenly they have a decent shot at returning to the World Series).

We would have been a better team with Mookie. I don't deny that. I don't think it would have made much of a difference in our standings though.

We finished 5 games behind the Astros.

That being said, we are better off by the deal.

So you think the Sox with a rotation headlined by Nate Eovaldi, Martin Perez and Chris Mazza, were one Mookie away from World Series contention?

Eovaldi, Houck and Pivetta all pitched pretty good at the end of the season.

Honestly,if the Sox had Betts, where do you think we would have finished? Or do you think we would not be finished yet?

And while I like Pivetta and Houck, let's not forget they pitched 27 IP this year combined...

Yeah, I was just messing around a bit with that post. :)

And avoiding answering questions :)

We finished 24-36. The thought of Mookie giving us a chance at a ring this year never entered my mind, so I just skipped that part.

I never said that -- just pointing out stats like Mookie's WAR and the final standings, and how he may have got us closer to playoff contention...
