Now that Sale and Schwarber are active, much of disappointment is dissipating. There just seems to be urgency now to this season. Schwarber's rehab game on Thursday was rained out. Sox just said hell with it and put him in the lineup on Friday. I like that.

Dalbec is heating up. Kike has been hot now 3/4 weeks? Renfroe is steady. Duran will help. Brasier should be back. Arroyo should be back. We're finally playing the hot catcher more. Verdugo needs to pick it up offensively. JD, Devers and Xander have been very solid overall.

Our rotation is shaping up and pitching better. Hopefully Richards and Perez can contribute in the pen.

It's definitely far from being over.

When Arroyo gets back we will be strong at every field position except catcher and in that we can be good part of the time unless Vaz can get it back together. I am for being as strong with depth as we can, including the bench so would bring Munoz up as well. Cordero can go down.

One thing I didn’t realize is this year, the minor league seasons run through September, which means if Duran or Cordero aren’t going to play, sending them down at least means they can still get some baseball in…

Plawecki has been great depth at catcher.

If we stick to just a 3 man bench, and Schwarber plays 1B most of the time, our bench will be Duran, Dalbec and Plawecki.

If we go to 13 pitchers and 4 bench players, I'd be fine with Munoz over Cordero. Once Arroyo returns to health, we don't need Cordero's depth in the OF, as Kike plays CF. We don't need Cordero at 1B, since Schwarber and Dalbec should cover that.

It would come down to Munoz > Arauz, IMO.

We may also see more fall league play than normal.

And where does Travis Shaw fit in?

Cordero to AAA.

Shaw is late inning defensive 1Bman for Schwarber.

Shaw’s boringly average defensive numbers might make that feasible…

He's gotta be better than Cordero & Schwarber on D and likely better than Dalbec at 1B. He can also play 2B and 3B.

As of now, he's probably a better fit than Cordero or Santana, but that's not saying much.

Well, he has played 2b. But that doesn’t mean he can play there. He’s a worse option there than Arroyo, Hernandez, Arauz and probably Munoz…

He's dreadful at the plate. You don't want him starting. It's a lateral move more than anything else.

Franchy's 484 OPS since coming back isn't working for you?

Agreed, but he plays it better than Cordero, and having the option of playing him there helps Cora with late inning flexibility.

No, never starting. I clearly said, "late inning defensive replacement for Schwarber."

Actually, I don't even look at sample sizes that small and scattered when making suggestions.

I still like Cordero, but now is not the time to give him a look. He should be playing everyday in AAA.

Shaw is better, for now and for what we need, now.

I don't see Shaw at all unless we have an injury. I wouldn't demote anyone except Cordero and Arauz when we are back at full strength and that leaves no room for Shaw. Maybe when we move to 28 players but even then I would take Munoz over Shaw.

I'd say, right now, with Schwarber's defense at 1B in question, Shaw might be more valuable than Cordero & Arauz. I like Munoz, but I'll leave that choice to Bloom.

When we expand to 28, my guess is we go with 14 pitchers and 14 everyday players. With 100% health, I see no room for Shaw either, but he may be close to equal to our 14th everyday player.

14 pitchers:

Sale

Eovaldi

ERod

Pivetta

Houck

Barnes

Ottavino

Whitlock

Richards

Perez

DHern (may miss Sep)

Taylor

Sawamura

Last pitching slot:

Brasier, Valdez, Davis, Robles, Rios, Seabold, Andriese

14 Non Pitchers

Vaz

Plawecki

Schwarber

Dalbec

Arroyo

Devers

Bogey

Verdugo

Kike

Renfroe

Duran

JD M

last 2 slots:

Arauz, Cordero, Wong, Shaw, Santana (DFA'd by SEP?) & maybe Munoz (not on 40, right now.)

To make room for Munoz on the 40, we may first have to "make room" for Brasier (60 day IL) &Taylor (COVID list).

You'd move Shaw to 2b late in a game?

No, but if we have to PH for someone, or someone gets hurt late in a game, I'd rather have Shaw at 2B than Cordero or Vaz.

Honestly, I don't remember how Shaw is in the field. His numbers at 2b are poor though.

I think he actually surprised people at how not horrible he was at 2B.

Sure.

..and of course, I'll repeat the refrain, "He can't hit any worse than Cordero, Marwin or _____!"

And I will add this disclaimer that my statement that begins with the phrase “he can’t be any worse than” is always false. Sure he can. The question is, will he be?

With Shaw, the answer might be a 50-50 guess, at best.

Travis Shaw will continue to do Travis Shaw things.

Ok, but this year, the list of Travis Shaw Things includes “post an OPS+ of 66” and “get released from a contender”….

Now he is on the active roster and Cordero is sent down. That should tell us what they think of Cordero.
