I really hope there are fans in the stands next year. I liked empty ballparks more than I thought, but it's not the same. But, if there are fans in the seats next year, I have a huge decision to make.

No, please don't climb the monster, rant at the field and throw a hat.

I will never sit up there if I can help it. When I took a tour of Fenway years ago, they told us that they usually get a couple of broken noses per year. And that's just from balls hit up there, not to mention bar fights that break out. It's basically one big Irish pub up there

Hard disagree. Also, there are way less fights in recent years then back in the olden days. And a cursory googling leads me to believe that most fights between Sox and Yankees fans occur in the Bronx, not at Fenway.

If he gets dropped, you can probably even get him for cheaper.

This should be the ultimate goal with Mitch.

Keep signing him, but for less money each time. :)

If we spend close to $60M, this winter, we should be a playoff contender at best and a .500 team at worst.

Depends what you're including in the $60M.

Moreland 2020:

w/ Sox: WRC+ 206

w/ Pads: WRC+ 59

567 OPS: the difference between his Sox OPS and his Pads OPS.

I could be wrong, but my impression of Bloom is a guy always looking forward: no sentimental re-signings for nostalgia's sake, no Steve Pearce World Series bonus contracts, no bringing back Brock Holt, no more Moreland, no Cora or Tek at the helm, seeya later Bradley Junior.

I'll bet Bloom sold his childhood baseball cards and comic book collections when he was a teenager so he could upgrade with the new iphone, and the only MLB pics he doesn't delete are of pre-arb players... He may not be ruthless, but he's definitely mookless.

Moreland is a notorious fast starter. His careerOPS by month:

March/April: .817

May: .849

June: .774

July: .642

August: .829

September: .659

Outside of an annual mid-season surge in August, he tends to drop off dramatically after hot starts nearly every year...

I think you can bring back Moreland and JBJ because they will be cheap. Even when JBJ isn't hitting, he still provides decent value with his glove and QBing the OFers. Moreland is a LH platoon guy, something the Sox could use at 1b.

Even with his late season flop, I could see Preller taking Moreland back for another year at his current option price. It's not like that team has Lou Gehrig manning 1b...

For the previous 5 years (15 - 19), he played in over 98% of all the games his team played.

The dollar amount for 2021 probably is not as important as the obligations that could hamstring the franchise in later years.

That's the way you have to be when you're running the Rays.

Are you suggesting teams should not invest in free agents at all?

A team with enough underpriced assets can afford to enter a free agent market that produces -- on the average -- a poor return on investment.

Exactly. That statement also described Friedman when he was there. No way he signs Mookie to that contract to play in Tampa...

The Red Sox have obviously blown a ton of money on underperforming free agents.

In spite of that, the net return of investing in free agents has been a large contribution to 4 titles and to a massive growth in the value of the franchise.

No Manny: no rings.

No Lackey/Vic/Napoli: no ring.

No JD/Price: no ring.

I can agree with that. A bunch of obscenities and evil looks were thrown my way walking into Yankee Stadium as a 12 year old. Shockingly, when I went there in 2019, everybody was chill

Was Pearce a free agent as well? Or was he part of a trade? Quite literally wouldn't have a ring without the WS MVP

Beeks for Eovaldi.

Santiago Espinal for Pearce and cash

Do not forget Uehara, indisputably the best free agent signing Cherington made...

Drew.

Yes. Wrong JD. My own cerebral autofull just types "Martinez" after JD nowadays, which is why the Sox cannot acquire JD Davis...

DiceK

Coco Crisp

Crisp was acquired via trade with the Guardians for the late Andy Marte, who had just been acquired from the Braves for Edgar Renteria, who was a free agent. So I guess there is a chain...

We've had 2 JD free agents, and 2 Drew free agents...
