That is incredible . Hard to explain or chalk up to crap shoot randomness.

I beg to differ. I'm thinking it has a lot to do with randomness.

But there really isn't much else to explain it. Those 18 games span 16 seasons and the teams just have very little in common with each other in terms of players and managers. It's not like it's the same players choking game after game. The Twins current starting second baseman was 5 years old when that streak started, and one of their starting pitchers was 7...

My man.

I feel really bad for the Red and their fans. Today's loss is the type of game that would cause me to lose sleep.

Not that I really care who wins that series, but man, what a heartbreaker that was for them.

Maybe , but I do think it can get in the player's minds a bit. It is hard to be at your best when doubt creeps in .

I do not disagree with that.

All I can say is , I'd like to do that in roulette .

No doubt.

But if you have a fair coin that is flipped fairly 18 times, and somehow comes up heads all 18 times, it's still a very random event

Brings me back to AP Stats... Bad memories. I had it two periods after AP Calc. I loved Calc much more. Stats is more like English. Anything can be right if you explain it. I don't like that.

The odds against 18 heads in a row are astronomical.

To be exact, the chances of flipping 18 heads in a row are 1 in 262,144.

I don't think I would enjoy teaching AP Stats. The math behind it is fine, but like you said it's a lot like English. Grading papers would be a nightmare for me.

I wonder what the chances of losing 18 straight playoff games are. If you take each game as a 50-50 toss up, it would be the same as the coin flip.

Exactly. 1 in 262,144. And how many postseason games have there been in MLB history? Maybe 2,500-3,000?

Interesting twist here is the NCAA tourney style bracket. No re-arrangement by seeding. In usual times, we would be playing the A's as the AL seeds remaining are 1, 2, 5, and 6. The Yanks being the 5 seed would get the A's as the 2. I would MUCH rather the A's!!

In other postseason news, today the White Sox played the team's first ever winner-take-all postseason game in the franchise's 120 year history...

Looks like it'll be another 120 years before they get a chance to win one

The Padres' power really went off last night. I do have to wonder about the celebratory antics and whether some opposing players are going to take serious offense to it.

I think it would have been interesting to watch them play the Dodgers with fans in the stadium. Imagine doing that against your arch, but more like one sided over the last 15 years or so, rival

I personally like the Padres "antics". Fernando Tatis Jr has quickly become one of my favorite athletes in any sport. His effort and the way he can make a game changing play anywhere on the field is awesome. I also enjoy his bat flips, I can only imagine how insane Petco would've been when he hit those two home runs last night if there was fans there, especially the homer with the massive flip towards the Padres dugout.

I like them as well. Nothing wrong with showing off if you back it up in my book

Just thinking of Jose Bautista and Rougned Odor...

Posted

In yesterday's game, Tommy La Stella reached first via catcher's interference for the 14th time in his career, which is a bit remarkable considering he has only 1500 career PA.

The all time leader in CI is Jacoby Ellsbury with 31, but that took him nearly 5400 plate appearances. (Although he got on base via catcher's interference 12 times in 2017 alone, a single season record.)

Yeah Odor is a bitch. I have no problem with Bautista's bat flip. Go ahead HR in game 5 for a team that hadn't won a playoff series in years. If you're on the road, maybe you don't do that, but when you're in front of the home crowd, go nuts. Odor was at fault there

The easiest way to stop bat flips is to not let give up a home run to that player.... Unless its Yasiel Puig, he might bat flip a single or a fly out.

I'm pretty neutral about it. But a lot of people seemed to think Bautista had it coming.

Well clearly I'm not one of them ;)

Some times the other guy is going to beat you. The question is whether it's OK to not just beat the other guy but "show him up" as the old parlance puts it.

The Bautista bat flip seems to me to be a bit of a precedent-setter on this. Texas players obviously took serious exception to it.
