Most likely, it will be a 4th pick.

Manfred originally stated that he'd change the order if they didn't play a whole season or if there was outrageous tanking going on.

Good to know.

This will be our highest pick since the mid 60's.

How about the player to be named later. has he been identified? I understood he couldn't be identified until the end of the regular season.

We got Jacob Wallace for Pillar. Soxprospects.com has him ranked 20th.

I think we are still owed a PTBL or cash from Philly for the Workman/Hembree trade.

Did we ever get a PTBNL from the Cubs for Osich? I think not.

The cash (and possible PTBNL) in the Workman/Hembree trade go the other way to the Phillies:

The PTBNL in the Osich trade has not been reported.

The 4th pick is awesome. Let's say the pitchers go first and second, that would leave the Red Sox with the second best position prospect. I would take a position prospect at 4--too many things can go wrong with pitchers.

The 2021 Red Sox starting staff:

T.Houck

E-Rod

N.Eavoldi

--Free agent-- ???

N.Pivetta

With C.Sale coming back later in the season

with Mata and Groome providing minor league depth

As far as the free agent SP goes, I would keep away from Bauer, who will be very expensive, and look at the next tier down.

I would pick up Perez's option and trade him for a relief arm.

Moreover, I think MLB would like to see the Pirates succeed--too many losing seasons and they haven't won a championship since the disco era ("We are Family"). They can't take that top pick away from the Pirates.

Why not? The Pirates get top picks all the time..,

The Pirates are actively not allowing that team to compete. They've had lots of great prospects and young players, but never retain them. They have a beautiful ballpark. They have a lot of history. The ownership is just strangling that franchise with his purse strings.

It does pose a good question as to why Pittsburgh cannot support an MLB franchise. It's always just been a given that they were a small market team, but their situation is not the same as in Tampa, where a huge chunk of the local population is dsplaced New Yorkers who all have a previous alliance to the Yankees...

I've always felt it would be easier to get towards parity, if you penalized the low spending teams for not spending rather than the high spending ones for spending too much.

Tampa grows approximately 1.5% annually. Pittsburgh has seen a population decline for the past decade.

Pittsburgh attendance bottomed out 2017 - 2019. They used to be middle of the road prior to then. However, even when attendance was up, they would still have a fairly low payroll. This probably caused a bit of disillusion with ownership among the fanbase.

Tampa is usually in the bottom 3 no matter what the standings are.

Currently, the Pittsburgh Pirates are valued at $1.26 billion. This resulted in a yearly value change of around -1%. With the majority of baseball still raking in money, this negative value change puts the Pirates as one of only two teams that lost value over the course of 2019. The Miami Marlins were the only other team that had a negative value change (-2%).

The decrease in team value is obviously tied to poor on the field performance, poor public perception, and poor management decisions. All of these factors attributed to negative fiscal trends, including a 2019 gate revenue of $44 million for the Pirates. Gate revenue is simply ticket sales, a major source of revenue for any MLB team. This is the third straight year the Pirates experienced a decrease in gate revenue, down from $70 million in 2016.

If I have to really evaluate the two franchises, Tampa seems to have a well run franchise that is smart enough to save money where they can. The Pirates are a horribly run franchise that saves money for the owner but can't put a competitive product on the field even if they have a recent history of developing really good players (good scouting, s*** coaching?). Seems like there is just some sort of disfunction at the top of the organization that is preventing the MLB team from succeeding.

I remember the Pirates did not even sell our their World Series home games back in the day.

The nice stadium is not enough. It's a football town. Great place to live. s***** baseball team and management/ownership. If they could win, they might be able to sustain profits.

TB should just move.

No, they get better tv ratings than the Mets, Dodgers, Padres, Rangers, Angels, White Sox.

Teams that should move or get new ownership: Orioles, Pittsburgh, A's, Padres

The Rays have been a successful franchise since 2008. There is no reason to move them. Yes, they need a new ballpark in a better location, but I think they should stay in the Tampa area.

Should the spending be calculated over one year or over five years?

A requirement that each team spend a minimum each year would be like forcing a person to live paycheck-to-paycheck, not saving money for the future.

The Houston Astros had one a baseball's lowest payrolls for a few years but increased spending once the club's underpriced assets made the team competitive.
