I feel that prospects have two uses . One : To fill your present or future needs . Two : To trade for someone who can fill those needs . I have no problem trading them when the opportunity is there and the return is significant .

I agree with all of this to a certain extent. I do think there has to be a balance between the short and long term goals, meaning it's not wise to completely wipe out your farm system. Also, we would probably disagree on the definition of 'significant' as far as the return is concerned.

Kimmi , Yes , we would probably disagree on the definition of " significant " return . We would also probably disagree on the quality of the prospects D.D. traded .

People do fall in love with the young prospects. In Chris Sale , the Sox got one of the premier pitchers in the game . Yoan Moncada has settled into being a pretty good , but not exceptional ballplayer. Michael Kopech is sitting out yet again while still living off his reputation as the next Nolan Ryan . He has a grand total of 1 major league victory to date . Sometimes these kids are really not worth falling in love over.

Moncada’s not exceptional?

Also to provide minimum wage value so you can retain superstar players. Betts did extend with the team that’s paying guys like Lux, May, Smith, Gonsolin, and Bellinger dirt cheap wages all around...

A .915 OPS at age 24 is not exceptional?

That was last year . He had a very good year in 2019. No argument there. His OPS has never been above .750 in other years . It is .730 so far this year . I would have to see more to call him exceptional.

He had COVID 19!!! He hasn’t fully recovered yet! There was a story a week ago about how he finds himself still getting weak and exhausted quickly.

Might as well call Sale a jabroni because he hasn’t thrown a pitch this year...

Many of the prospects DD traded away still have several years of team control left.

Judging them, now, makes little sense.

I will say that many have already shown they were not worth the hype and their control time is nearly up or their performance has not shown any signs of big league stuff. Guys like Espinoza have been hurt. Kopech may still produce, but he got hurt, too. Margot looked promising at the start of his ML career but has petered out, recently.

These guys still look good or have a some decent promise:

Moncada

Kopech

Dubon

Buttrey

Allen

Maybe...

Anderson, Bautista, Beeks, Lakins, Margot

The Sox pitching is bad, But look around the league today,

The Tigers' pitching gave up 19 runs, and didn't even come close to having the worst day in the league. The Braves have put up 29 (and counting) on the Marlins. (Sox worst to date is 17.)

In the Braves-Marlins game, Adam Duvall hit a 2 run home run, a 3 run home run and a grand slam (9 RBIs!!). He needed just the solo shot to be the first Major Leaguer ever to hit the home run cycle...

I looked at that box score after 5. The Braves had reached base 23 of their first 37 PAs!

They started the pummeling against Pablo Lopez, who is usually a very good pitcher...

Just think about the fact that the Marlins lost by 20 last night. You score 9 runs, a pretty good night from your own offense, and lose by 20. The Tigers losing by 19 is a different story. They got 2 hit and just s*** the bed. I would rather have a night where everything goes wrong, lose 19-0 and get it out of my system, than hit the ball pretty well, score 9, but not be able to stop grandma from hitting dingers on the other side.

The losses where you get blown out by a significant margin are usually easier to take. The close losses, especially if you lose the game in the late innings, are much harder to take. The close wins or losses usually come down to a few good or bad breaks that change the outcome in one way or another.

The pride of my high school hit his 100th career HR earlier this afternoon. During my freshman year, we wore the old varsity jerseys from when he was on the team, and I wore his current jersey number. I don't know for sure, but if he wore the same number in HS, then I wore his old jersey.

I am not the least bit impressed with the Yankee's latest phenom , Little Deivi Garcia . He looks like just one more Pedro wannabe who will never live up to it . There are a ton of high school pitchers with better velocity.

Eck and Remy were certainly not impressed.
