Honestly, I get that doctors like Andrews and ElAttrache are not going to help the COVID-19 crisis. They’re specialists. My dentist isn’t helping either. But yes, the whole “essential to our livelihood” angle smacks of someone saying something he himself doesn’t believe...

My dentist isn't helping either. But my dentist has cancelled all non emergency appointments.

That's probably mostly to prevent the spread of the virus, but that is also a risk that doctors are taking with non-emergency surgeries.

That's about the worst look possible.
The truth is that he is at a much higher risk of getting a serious bacterial infection from his hospital stay. That has been the ongoing crisis in our healthcare system -- the explosion of serious life-threatening infections for hospital patients. People should research the number of annual deaths attributable to that. The stats will shock people.

Florida has banned all nonessential surgeries. So how is Noah Syndergaard to have his elbow repaired there tomorrow? The answer: DOCTORS are the ones who define "essential" -- and this hospital said Tommy John for a baseball player counts.

Bogus preferential treatment for the rich and famous, if you ask me.

Here is the Florida governor's executive order regarding "Non-essential Elective Medical Procedures":

This was the leading cause of MRSA cases about 15 years ago, I believe

Thor would be better off just learning to pitch left-handed...

If it's normal for babies to be born in their bathroom tubs in 2020, I think Noah should suck it up and not be less of a man than all these pregnant women!

Thanks for posting this. It specifically states that non urgent orthopedic surgeries should be delayed.

Then there is this, from Speier today:

"In Massachusetts, Gov. Charlie Baker called for the postponement of elective procedures on March 15.

Three Massachusetts orthopedists contacted by the Globe said the state’s prohibition would include ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction (i.e. Tommy John surgery), and that the operation shouldn’t be performed here for anyone, including professional athletes.

“There’s no question that Tommy John is an elective surgery,” said former Red Sox medical director Thomas Gill, now the director of the New England Baptist Hospital-affiliated Boston Sports Medicine and Research Institute. “A lot of guys try PRP [platelet-rich plasma] injections, try rehab to avoid it, and when they can’t, they end up having surgery. By definition, that’s elective.”

Syndegaard did indeed have his surgery today.

This seems to bother me more than it bothers most of the rest of you, but I am disappointed in both Syndegaard and the doctor who performed the surgery.

I know it's clogging up the ERs, but I think it's smart

I really don't know how to feel about it.

But the Red Sox silence on the matter is a little weird.

It's smart from a selfish point of view only.

It's not a bad thing to be a little selfish in moderation

Yeah, I saw your earlier post about this. I would not be surprised if Sale has already had the surgery. If that's the case, that might be an even worse look that the Sox and Sale are trying to be so secretive about it.

I agree, but I don't think selfishness to the point of perhaps costing other people their lives is considered in moderation.

1 little TJ operation takes what, like 2 hours? Plus, it's not like COVID-19 patients are getting operated on, at least not regularly

Just like Boris Johnson who couldn’t stop shaking hands at the hospital?

Do you seriously want Sale going into a hospital filled with COVID patients right now?

Defiant and selfish aren't the same thing

It's not smart to postpone surgeries and risk someone else's health by restricting it to coronavirus patients only. Obviously they should get priority, but if somebody else needs an operation, they should be able to get an operation

You honestly don’t believe the risk of infection is huge at a hospital?

What is it about non essential do you fail to comprehend. TJ surgery is hardly essential surgery. If the Governor has banned non essential surgery then it is prohibited under the current health emergency., end of argument.
