My surprise add is Chatham at 2b. Dalbec/Mitch platoon at 1b. Chavis used as UTIL guy.

I don’t like using rookies as weak side platoon options, unless that rookie has a low ceiling.

Dalbec does need a new position, since (hopefully) 3b is locked up for a while. If this trade happens and Verdugo locks up RF, 1b is a good option. Although trying something radical like 2b would be my first try (in Pawtucket, of course)...

I think Dalbec needs a chance to show off the potential power. However, I don’t think this guy can be mobile enough to play 2B. Chatham should be the guy at 2B. Is there someone coming that can actually contribute in the rotation?

I don't think the Sox plan on moving Dalbec off of 1B. They re-signed Mitch more as inurance and to give Dalbec some more time if needed. Mitch might get more playing time at the beginning of the season, but eventually, Dalbec will be playing mostly everyday.

No rotation help between Boston and Mata.

Dalbec absolutely lacks the mobility for 2b. But the defensive requirements of the position are in flux. Rather than being capable of making up range for slower, behemoth-like first baseman, 2bmen now spend between 1/3 and 1/4 of their time in short right field, where quickness means less but a strong arm means more. Also, while I expect Dalbec would be less agile, if he can take advantage of his 6’4” frame, he can make up for some lack of range. And if he flops, Pawtucket loses a couple more games. Low risk.

But yeah, I suspect he plays mostly, if not solely 1b this year...

I'd go with...

1. Beni LF

2. Bogaerts SS

3. Devers 3B

4. JD DH

5. Verdugo RF

6. Moreland 1B

7. JBJ CF

8. Vazquez C

9. Peraza 2B

(I think they will put Verdugo 2nd, Bogey 3rd, JD 4th and Devers 5th- maybe flip flop JD & Devers based on LH/RH starter.)

Subs: Plawecki, Chavis, Lin & Arauz (rule 5)

S1 Sale

S2 ERod

S3 Eovaldi

S4 Perez

S5 D Hern (opener) or Maeda or who we get for Betts

R1 Workman

R2 Taylor

R3 Barnes

R4 Walden

R5 Hembree

R6 Brasier

R7 Weber

R8 Brice

I didn't think Chavis had the mobility to play 2B, either. I'm still not sure he does.

We still lack starting pitcher depth- just like last year.

Here is what we have within the system- not counting who we might get as part of the Betts trade:

(*opener?)

Hector Velazquez

Brian Johnson

*D Hernandez

*Ryan Weber

*Tanner Houck

Mike Shawaryn

Kyle Hart

Daniel McGrath

Bryan Mata AA

Denyi Reyes AA

Not an inspiring list.

That's pretty bold but not unrealistic.

Are you banking on us sending Arauz back?

Banking on the Sox doing the smart thing and making a deal (player or financial) to keep him or simply sending him back. I don’t get why any team would bury a Rule 5 player in their bench, killing a year of development while also burning a year of service time...

They must really like him.

Love the Puig addition

You should kiss Chaim Blooms ass when they don't sign Puig.

Yeah. There are definite pros to signing Puig. But the cons to signing Puig have their own cons...

If you think losing him tonight is good, because we can get him back......then we are speaking 2 different languages. That dude is gone, long long gone.

What's the OF to look forward to?

He was gone after 2020 if the Sox didn’t trade him. Now they actually have a chance to bring him back..

Exactly. People here are complaining about paying him $35-37M a year x 10 years, but think of the cost with a 50% lux tax attached. There's no way we could have or would have signed him without resetting in 2020.

They were never willing to pay him the second highest salary in baseball when they had his rights, but now that hes gone, they would be willing to pay him the second highest salary in baseball?

They traded him to the Dodgers, a team more than willing to pay those types of salaries regardless of luxury tax. He is not coming back.

Posted
And I thought my Jackie Bradley/Ian Kennedy swap would draw the most questions...

It looked understandable, to me, despite the $4.5M more in salary.

How about JBJ & Chavis for Matz and D Smith?

You have got to be f***ing kidding. Mookie wants to be a free agent and become the highest paid athlete EVER in any sport! He wants to make more money than the entire XFL!!

The Sox have already made outrageous offers to him. The Red Sox did not become one of the highest spending teams in history by shortchanging players.

And the Dodgers are going to pay him? Mookie asked for 10 years. Name one Dodger player EVER to get a deal like that. In fact, name the Dodger with the longest contract (hint: Yasiel Sierra)

Mookie is hitting the market. Book it. It’s what he has wanted all along and he has never kept that a secret. And the high soaring Red Sox check-writers just reset the tax penalties right on time..

Only $3mill more towards the tax. But also freed up a place to accommodate the only free agent left capable of making an impact...

In what I think is still the current vernacular...

"WORD"

Unfortunately I now have to tell my granddaughter to put her Mookie game shirt away for a year and hope for the best.
