Thanks for posting this. I knew he answered that Q, before.

It solidifies the premise that Betts was absolutely open to staying with the Red Sox, and they just didn't show him enough money.

I've always felt this to be true. Same with Lester.

Let's say they float the $300M number, verbally and they see Bett's agents roll their eyes and not even make a counter offer. If $300M was very close to the highest you were going to go,anyway, maybe you don't even make a counter offer.

IMO, why not send a formal offer for $310M/11, and then see what happens.

(With Lester, it was a bit different. Lester had said he'd consider a hometown discount, and it's hard to know how low that meant, but the fact they never countered until way later makes me think they never wanted to pay him what it would take. IMO, they didn't even want him to say yes to their final offer.)

Bogey: same thing. They never wanted to pay what Bogey wanted at any point along the timeline.

I read a report yesterday that said Bloom was never told he had to trade Mookie to get under the tax line, but he went ahead, and did it anyway.

That would be a story indeed.

Where is that report?

We have yet to get a link to any story we asked for one, like when he said every news outlet said we got an "F on a trade.

I also read another report that said Betts had no regrets turning down the 10/yr $300M offer. This is what I mean there is so many things out there.

Both statements can be true, if you consider no formal offer was made, but $300M was offered, informally.

Calm your jets, and your insinuations, because I gave that info yesterday on the 8-26 game thread.

I barely read the GT's, and don't post on weekends. Link?

You gave the link?

I apologize, if you did.

I'm still waiting on the links with only "F" grades.

It’s not like Mookie is getting all $365M in 12 years either. There is a lot of deferred money in all of this. I believe his base salary this year is $20M

As far as what Mookie is now on record as saying, he has said:

1) An offer was made that he declined.

2) The offer was not the $300 mill that's been reported, with the clear implication that it was less than that.

Either way it was a small market team move, and not something that should have come from a big market team. Especially the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees ponied up for Judge, which hasn’t made a difference this year, but imagine the uproar in NY if that wouldn’t have happened.

Bad comp, since NYY will regret signing Judge. We regret not signing Mookie.

We hope NY will regret signing Judge, but it’s something that had to be done just like it should have been something the Red Sox should have done with Mookie. Judge isn’t the problem the Yankees have sucked this year outside of his toe injury, but what’s around him. I don’t think the Yankees are in for any big rebuild. Stanton would have been the bad signing to me. Enjoy the Yankees misery while you can.

Aaron Judge is also already 31. Mookie was traded after his age 26 season. Mookie’s skill set should age pretty well, while bigger players who strikeout a lot don’t really age that well. Look at Giancarlo Stanton who is only 2 years older than Judge.

But yes, I agree the Yankees kind of had to pay Judge and Red Sox SHOULD have paid Mookie.

It's not hope. It is expected his deal will be very bad.

To me it still had to be done if it turns out good, or bad. Judge will go down as one of the Yankee all time greats unless career threatening injuries takes it away from him. Same with Mookie who would have gone down as one of the Red Sox all time greats. To me those guys you keep especially when Mookie was still in the prime of his career. Once again a trade that can’t be defended, and a stain that can’t be erased.

These two teams aren’t just two big market teams. They are the Red Sox, and the Yankees.

Having to be done is a different issue, to me. (I'd argue at Judge's age, the contract was insane, but from a PR standpoint, yes. They were being held for ransom.)

Mookie's situation was for both PR and for the good of the team- short and long term.

The Judge contract may turn out worse than Stanton's.

Yes the length of Judge’s contract was insane just like Bogey’s was. The good of the team , short, and long term should have been to include Mookie, and to me that would have been over Raffy if you could only have one, but like I keep saying if you don’t want to pay to play then take your money, and go home. As I said in an earlier post Mookie has a lot of deferred money in his contract, so it’s not all being payed out in 12 years. Something could have, and should have been worked out by the Red Sox.

Mookie Betts AAV 29 mill

Raffy AAV - starting in 2024 - 31.35 mill

His base this year is $20M. Like I said something could have been worked out.

Yeah compared to some other contracts, Mookie’s is very reasonable. For example, someone like Manny Machado is going to be paid $35 million a year from his age 34-41 seasons. Machado is a good player, but he’s no Mookie.

They probably lowballed him like they did with Lester and Bogaerts. Can't really put it past them to offer Betts $250 mill or something like that - something they knew he wouldn't take.

They did take him to arbitration too.
