I certainly agree. I too will believe it when I see it.

JBJ is always on the cusp of breaking out with his hitting but he never does.

He actually does very well for most of each season. He just has horrible 3-5 week stretches that bring him down to about .720.

2017:

.537 first 22 games

.761 last 111 games (very respectable for 83% of season)

2018:

.502 first 46 games

.793 last 106 games (better than respectable for 70% of season)

2019:

.409 first 31 games

.828 last 115 games (Very good for 79% of season)

Maybe this is why he has more value, but man-o-man, those few weeks kill us!

You do realize that the guys ending with 800 OPS typically have long stretches above that, right? You have to look at the whole picture and that picture has clearly stated that JBJ is overall a minus minus offensive player.

While that may be, do you really think Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays should be replaced on the Greatest CF of All Time List by Jackie Bradley, Darren Lewis and Darryl Hamilton?

C'mon, you know Joe D and Say Hey were reputed to be as good or better than anyone in the outfield alone last century; their batting and base-running made them two of the best all-around all-timers at any position. Though Mantle was the most cherished baseball card...

I seriously doubt many hitters have the prolonged and horrid slumps JBJ has, and in the last 3 years- all have been to start the season.

.800 hitters may slump for 3-5 weeks, but their slumps might be at .550-.700 not .409 to .537.

BTW, JBJ was an .800+ hitter from 2015-2016 (.834 over all 230 games), but even then, he had some horrid slumps:

2015:

.384 in first 21 games! (.962 last 53 games)

.608 in first 27 games

2016:

.586 first 16 games (.861 last 140 games)

Do you honestly expect him to hit 950 again?

That's history pal!

That's definitely not true. I think they can win 95 games this year with or without JBJ.

JBJ fans should be losing their minds about Andruw Jones not getting into the HOF.

I think he will be robbed. Same goes for Vizquel and Wagner...

Vizquel and Wagner will get in eventually. I don't believe Jones ever will.

But when these writers make the arguments for best CF of all time, they always start by rambling off offensive stats. Occasioanly some defensive matter gets brought up as a complete afterthought. But when you have 600 career home runs or a 56 game hitting streak under your belt, you could go out to CF and the only time you actually use your glove is to challenge the corner outfielders to duels, and you're still considered one of the best of all time...

I think Wagner might be a longer shot than Jones...

Go look at Ted Williams' career WAR. 2nd highest for a LF. His glove was worse than if he challenged Dom to a duel every inning.

No, but he hit over .760 for a large percentage of each of last 3 seasons.

He just really sucks for 22-46 games to start the year.

I do think he could his .780-.820 again, but I'd bet he ends up near .710-.750 going forward.

I'm ok with moving on from JBJ. He is making 11m this season and his salary is only going to increase.

As for ERod, the guy is only making 2.6m and he's an above average major league pitcher. This is the type of contract you build on, not give away.

Trading Erod would be anti-moneyball.

Red Sox should instead be trying to move guys like Price, Eovaldi, and even Pedroia.

They should have non tendered him and signed Billy Hamilton instead.

ERod's value is probably at his highest. Bloomin Idiot could get a haul for him. He will not get a haul for 1 year of Mookie. He made several public statements about making every effort to keep Mookie long term. Trading Betts less than a month before Spring Training would make him look like a liar and a fool.

If they move Mookie, I bet more deals follow. If they can't deal Mookie, they'll stand pat and try to compete this year.

I agree with all of this. ERod would be the perfect low-cost addition to a team trying to get to the next level. The ask would have to be two pitchers coming back; an MLB-ready starter and a top prospect. Trade simulators -- get on this now... what pretender needs a 19-game winner to be a contender?

ERod to Milwaukee for Corban Burnes, Freddy Peralta and Mario Feliciano (catcher)

ERod to Cincinnati for Hunter Greene and Tony Santillan

ERod to St. Louis for Anthony Reyes and Zack Thompson

ERod to Atlanta for Touki Toussaint and Bryse Wilson

I like the idea of shopping Erod. If and its a huge if we sign Mookie to that mega deal he's going to be wanting. What will Erod demand down the road. Can we take on that type of contract too?

Bloom would be rightly pilloried for any trade involving E-Rod at this time.

You NEVER trade a good starting L.H. Pitcher with good stuff. ERod needs to just start trusting himself, and quit trying to be so fine with his pitches. One of the more forgettable trades in Sox History was one John Tudor. I see to much upside to give this guy away. Now the damn head case Price I am all for shipping him out with Betts, dude is cancer

But the trade of Tudor got us Don Baylor (via Mike Easler)...

yeah along with the dribbler up along the line, through Buckner's legs...took me 15 years and a new century to recover.

Yeah that wasn’t really fallout from the Tudor trade. I think you’re thinking of Dennis Eckersley (who is not left-handed)...

Buckner did nothing wrong.

I’m not sure he came out or arrived. He just stayed healthy for once.

Well, he did misplay that grounder. But it might be the most overblown and exaggerated miscue in professional sports history...
