Committing 9 years to any pitcher is ludicrous...may it blow up in their faces for a long time to come.

On the other hand, if Cole got this much, Mookie's asking price is probably going to be pushing $400 million, if it wasn't already...

The Sox and the other teams in the AL East will be doormats for the next 2 or 3 years. This team better do it right between all that time and put a winning product out there.

Curious, how many championships do the sox have to win to make you happy? Every year?

cole will look good in pinstripes giving up bombs to the Red Sox......

also....yankees bid against themselves...again. hahahahaha. joke of an org.

You’re just jealous. And we beat the s*** out of the Sox without Cole. Now it’ll just be a bloodbath

We faced Cole once last year. He pitched well, but also got outpitched by Rick Porcello....

We are not the tampa bay rays here. This is a big payroll team. They’re acting like a small market team. I can understand it from the point that they handed out bad contracts but this is Boston not tampa bay.

can you explain to me how "they are acting like a small market team"?

is it because JH only wants to spend $208MM on payroll next year?

No just make sure you field a competitive team out there. Don’t get rid of your best players unless you’re getting ready to play prospects. Also do something about this farm system. We need to start producing more players. The Yankees farm system is ridiculous.

A few years from now:

Jacko “I hated that deal when they signed him!”

Nobody knows what his plans are. We know one thing, his decision to wait it out until free agency is probably going to put at least $100 million more in his pocket.

Betts has made it abundantly clear what his plans are: he is going to test free agency and will almost certainly sign for the most money he can get. That is why its time to trade him for as much as we can get for him. It will be a season or two of holding our noses, but within five years we will be competitive again.

Pretty funny. I remember you writing similar nonsense in 2018, the last year the Sox won the WS. Perhaps you remember that year.

Lets play the games first; then talk about a bloodbath.

5 years is a long wait especially for a team with a high payroll.

I certainly agreed. Red Sox ownership can not afford to field non contenders for 4 or 5 years.

I really do hope that you are wrong. if you are right , it will cost the franchise many fans. Me of course being one. I really don't watch much tv but this team has provided great entertainment for me for a long time. Any stinker years at all going forward won't make it for me. Good luck.

i doubt they brought Bloom in so that they could cut money and be mediocre for 5 years. The plan was to be competitive with less money. Since Bloom built a playoff team with the lowest payroll in MLB, he was an obvious candidate for that plan...

The problem is the Sox are on the books for a lot of money. Bloom’s plan may be to be competitive on less, but this is quite an undertaking. He’s waiting for the post big Fa signings.

so the suggestion is that the Sox will now become a small market team ...?

That was not his point.

Bloom has shown he's good at finding talent without spending much.

We have less money to spend, now.

He's the right man for the job.

It doesn't mean he'll cut payroll to $85M.

Are you sure hang ‘em chaim was the guy driving the bus for Tampa?

Guys, here is the deal with Bloom. He has literally no money to spend. So therefore, he isn't gonna get into the whole FA sweeps that the winter meetings has become. And with the bevy of FAs still out there, he is likely not going to make a trade now when teams can get players for just cash and maybe a 2nd round forfeiture. Once all the big FAs sign, then teams will look to the trade market.

Also, once Bumgarner signs, then teams may be interested in Price. Bumgarner's projected cost is about what is left on Price's deal, but for 2 extra years.

The CF market is pretty light, so I think teams right now are figuring out who fits and whether they want to go after JBJ. With the lack of true CFers on the market, timing shouldn't be an issue for JBJ. My guess is he hasn't found the right deal yet

In terms of Betts, Castellanos and Ozuna are still out there. As silly as that sounds (Betts is the far superior player), both can fill the corner OF spot and produce positive WAR yet cost money and not prospects. And for both of those players, one year of Betts would be nearly the entire contract for one year of Betts

For Eovaldi, there are still quality pitchers out there coming off down seasons. Heck, Porcello is generating interest. Once the guys who can be signed for far less than Eovaldi dry up, then teams will be interested.

In short, Bloom clearly has more of a mandate to cut spending. This means he cannot partake yet in the offseason. Once teams' options dry up, he will be a very popular man

The Sox paying is still going to be around, if not over, $200 million. That’s not a small market payroll...

I had a pretty good idea what he meant.

Just thought that I would try on that embellishing thing for size. I know exactly what is being said here. I just don't think that there is much reason to feel that the team may put plans of progressing on hold for a few years just to build up the bank. In the event that that does happen or even looks like it might be happening, they will lose fans.
