... 9 years $324million.

Cole can opt out after 5 years. He won’t, but he can. Unless the market switches to paying $36 mill annually to 34yo pitchers.

Short term, this does not help Boston, as Captain Obvious here points out. Long term, this contract will very likely turn into an albatross wearing his own albatross...

So going into this year the highest contract for a pitcher was 217 million.

Now it's 324 million.

That's a 49.3% leap.

That’s an awful lot of money for a guy with fewer Cy Young Awards than Rick Porcello...

Now all the Pressure is on the Yanks to win it all.

And they're going to be very well positioned to do it. They're better, Astros are worse, Red Sox are cutting payroll...

Now I know for sure that we can't afford Porcillo.

$350/10 for Betts would look like a bargain, now.

4 years $145mill for Sale looks like 1990s pricing right now...

Especially when it's actually 5 years and the present value is only $128 mill. :D

It doesn’t work that way for lux tax, but for the payouts that’s cool.

I don’t mind the contract if he performs. If he stops performing, then I’ll mind the contract

Not quite, it all depends how he does this coming year. He wasnt exactly spectacular at the plate last year. If he does a repeat of last year at the plate no thanks on a deal for 10/350

Betts was fine at the plate last year. Thing is, you couldn't bank on his BABIP being extraordinary last year. I bet last year is his floor for his production in prime before his frame and speed loss knock off some value.

Listen, you make the contract if the window fits. If Bloom is able to somehow turn the sox production machine back on in the minors and shed some of the albatross contracts, then adding Betts back next year will be a necessity to combat the Yanks who are within their window right now. Otherwise, I think a lot of you guys are going to be disappointed when he goes elsewhere. The sox need a lot of team building to fill their needs and no farm to lean on. That is hard to add a $300+ mil commitment to

Harper hit .249 his last year in Washington, and isn't a Gold Glove outfielder. Mookie is getting paid...

Yeah cause Harper sucks and the Phillies overpaid him. I've said this many times, just because the Phillies overvalued Harper it doesn't make him worth what he got

The sox will probably have to give betts 400 Mil to keep him anyways due to the fact that he has no plans to stay in Boston

Nobody knows what his plans are. We know one thing, his decision to wait it out until free agency is probably going to put at least $100 million more in his pocket.

Harper was also 26 at the time of his deal. Betts will only be 28, but do not discount the importance of age in Harper's contract. Or ask Jason Heyward if it was a factor...

Can’t believe these owners are so poor they can’t pay MiLB guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly, it's offensive that players and specially coaches can not make enough to support their families and the worst player in the ML can live a more than adequate life, not counting the superstars which can make in one day what most of us won't make in a year

The Sox and the other teams in the AL East will be doormats for the next 2 or 3 years. This team better do it right between all that time and put a winning product out there.
