There has been some talk that SD is possibly looking to sign a SP'er, so maybe they can spend "the difference" on Price. They may not want Price, though.

Who else was in on Eovaldi last year? I wonder if they would still be interested. If his injury last year is a deterrent, they are clearly not familiar with his history. The guy has only thrown 303 IP since 2015...

The Recency Bias going into 2019 was a lot more positive than the Recency Bias is going into 2020.

Maybe but he only threw 111 IP in 2019...

Word around here was that Houston really wanted him but didn't want to go 4 years. Now, it's 3 years.

They likely will want some money included or send back a salary they don't need (Reddick?)

Would they trade Reddick straight up for Eovadi? The trade simulator says the Astros would say no.

So the Padres actually wanted Eovaldi one year ago? Interesting...

They didn't even list the Astros.

I like the deal you proposed on the trade simulator, even without the $5M going to us.

Recency matters but maybe not as much as it does to many fans and posters.

Recency mattered a lot to the Sox when they signed Eovaldi for 68 million, wouldn't you say?

Yes, perhaps too much.

It's not uncommon. Schilling II, Napoli II, Stephen Drew II...

He's long gone now. I've accepted it.

If he's not traded, the Red Sox have as good a chance as anyone else to sign him. There's no way one of the MLB's richest franchises in one of the biggest markets won't be able to afford him. According to Gammons yesterday (from the winter meetings), they want to make him the face of the franchise. They're going to move pieces to reset this year and pay him 400 million. Some fans will be outraged, some writers will cite data and claim it's imprudent, but that's the current/future market rate that he's earned.

If that really is the plan I'm fine with it.

...and people were calling me nuts for suggesting $350M/10.

Was that recency? Or some weird fascination Dombrowski had with Eovaldi? He did trade for him in the first place.

And history has shown, Dombrowski has a serious love affair with radar gun readings, which is one thing Eovaldi excels at, and probably the root of a lot of his physical problems...

Did we not agree that other teams were in on Eovaldi too?

And I think it's pretty obvious the way Eovaldi pitched in the 2018 postseason had a lot to do with his perceived value.

They were in on him, yes.

My question is - are any of them still interested? I'm not so sure if its recency or that he makes $17mill, which was clearly a number that caused some to shy away last year...

True, but everyone knew he was injury prone. That hasn't changed much from last winter.

I'm sure many teams would want Eovadli, right now. It's only for 3 years, now- not 4. The only question is at what cost- financially and in return players given.

The Eovaldi-Odor trade notin mentions makes some sense. We get a 30 HR second baseman and save money (even more on lux tax), and the Rangers get a decent SP'er, if healthy.

We have no idea what the offers were last year. Maybe another team offer 3 * 17...who knows.

The Sox seem focused on trading Price. If they succeed I assume they're keeping Eovaldi.

It appears that way. Price is the bigger contract, and many also think is the bigger a-hole, so I see the appeal.

But Price will also be more difficult to replace, because, while overpaid, he is still pretty good. And despite recent injuries, is still the more durable of the two.,.

Bloom has his hands full replacing Price and Porcello alright, especially with the likes of Kevin Gausman commanding 10 mill.

In Bloom’s future, I see a phone call to Ben Cherington about the availability of Chris Archer (who is available, as Cherington has publicly said everyone is).

And Cherington saying “So you replaced Dombrowski? Good. Guy wanted me to stay on but took all my responsibilities. Took me forever to get another GM job. I spent the last 3 years in Toronto filling coffee orders. Tell you what? Make me a reasonable offer.”

And that, boys and girls, was how Jay Groome became a Pirate...

Archer's salary/AAV is 9 million.

Might as well sign Porcello and hang onto Groome, no?

$9M will be much cheaper than Porcello. If it's $3-5M less, it would mean it might be another cheap FA being able to sign or not.

9 mill + Groome is not cheap, though.

I believe his AAV is only $4mill, but his salary is $9mill.

It was $25.5M/4, so about $6.1, but 2020 is a $9M option year, so it would cost us $9M on the lux tax line ($11M option for 2021).

If I am right about Archer's AAV, is it a bad deal? Also, while I do think Groome is probably only one of maybe two or three pitchers in the Sox system that have a chance to be worth anything, right now the guy looks like a left-handed Anderson Espinoza.

And if the Sox cannot sign a pitcher, they will have to trade for one. (Or - 32 starts from Hector Velasquez and Mike Shawaryn!!! Yeah!!) So who do you recommend be the trade bait? (Dalbec is actually a good answer, although not sure what he gets you back.)
