I'm not wild about Garcia, and the Sox have had plenty of good defensive RFers even before Betts, including JD Drew, Trot Nixon, and Shane Victorino. During the years the Sox used lesser defensive right fielders like Billy Hatcher, Darren Bragg and Cody Ross, the team was usually not very good.

I don't think they leave RF up for anyone with a bat. At least I hope not...

Agreed. And the three guys you mentioned that the Sox won rings with all had better arms than their centerfielders (Elllsbury, Damon, even Coco).

As good as Betts' arm is, I still think Bradley's might be better...

It might happen, and he might surprise. There was a time when the Guardians thought Coco Crisp would never make it as a centerfielder because of his defense.

The Red Sox did win a title with Johnny Damon in CF. A good defensive CF is always a plus, and certainly something I would want. But if the Sox have Betts in RF, maybe Benintendi in CF won't be as horrible as many are predicting...

It would be easier to just acquire a CF'er not a LF'er, so we don't need to put Beni to the test.

Tough crowd here. Beni is 25 and center field is his natural position, where he was College Player of the Year, two years after Rawlings -- the Gold Glove company -- named him National High School Player of the Year. Isn't such a player, especially coming off a down-year after posting a 4 WAR two seasons ago, the type of guy Bloom covets? And he's already on our team.

As far as defensive metrics, experts on MLB constantly dismiss or berate analytics when it comes to D. Here's a quote about JBJ from a Sox beat reporter, just today: "(One note on defense: the advanced metrics suggest Bradley regressed last year, but because publicly available defensive stats are considered flawed and unreliable, I wouldn't fixate on the fact that his defensive runs saved, for instance, dropped into negative territory.)"

Bradley has the better arm but he doesn’t always control it well, especially to home (throws are often up the line or spiked into the infield). Betts is much more accurate.

1. Benintendi made the best catch in Red Sox history.

2. Benintendi was nominated as a Gold Glove finalist the past two regular seasons.

1. No

2. Palmeiro

Also, LF isn’t known for defensive prowess so I don’t think a LF GG is a big enough deal to move someone to CF. If his arm wasn’t garbage, he’d be in RF.

His sprint speed tanked last year too.

If we trade JBJ, we'll need to acquire an OF'er. Why go out of our way to get a LF'er?

This is not about metrics. It's about keeping Beni where he belongs: LF.

It all depends on who meets the Sox asking price. So far the only names mentioned in rumors are Jake Marisnick and Avisail Garcia...

Sorry, bad use of adjective on my part.

1. Benintendi made the greatest catch in Red Sox history; it saved a playoff game and very well could have saved the pennant in a season when Boston won a World Series. It was the catch the Associated Press voted Play of the Year across all sports for 2018.

Is there another catch in any other Red Sox game that comes even close to meaning so much? Evans' catch in Gm 6 of '75 saved the game; Sox lost the World Series. Brunansky's catch in '90 saved the division; Sox lost the ALCS. Nixon made a pretty important one in the '04 LCS, but it wasn't as difficult.

My memory is fuzzy, though, so please remind me of any other catch in Red Sox history that was a combination of more spectacular and more impactful.

2. Rawlings nominated the finalists for their awards.

Now Harry Hooper supposedly had some sort of legendary catch in the 1912 World Series that was referred at the time as one of the greatest plays on baseball history. But I confess I’ve never seen it and doubt any links exist. So you’ll just have to take my word. And maybe Google’s..

I Googled "Harry Hooper catch video" -- didn't find it, but there's a sketchy vid of Hooper throwing out Zach Wheat in the '16 Series. I think he went gluten free after that. Another Google hit is titled: "Heineken beer truck catches fire"

Don’t sell the Great Harry Hooper short with your pithy sarcasm... ;)

The scoop on Hoop: 4 rings for the Red Sox for this Hall of Famer; that's 4 times more than Beni and the Betts, and 4 more than zero rings combined for Yaz and Ted.

Hooper, along with fellow Cooperstowner Tris Speaker, and Duffy Lewis (who could ascend, but not dive off a cliff) comprise the legendary greatest outfield in Red Sox history.

I can't compare players I didn't see, but I'm confident that the current (for now) trio of Mookie-Beni-JBJ is the Red Sox best defensive unit since, at least in 50 years, and maybe an entire century. And this is coming from a guy whose talksox name pays tribute to maybe the greatest defensive outfield core (except I'm finally realizing the level of disrespect associated with the words "Gold Glove" to some discerning fans)...

Oh I don’t claim to have seen Harry Hooper either and know nothing of this alleged catch beyond its reputation.

But... if you’re going to say “in team history” you do have to acknowledge the entire history and not just what happened in the lifetime of your fandom....

skinny beni made a great postseason catch

#fatbeni looked like Manny in LF

any beni in CF is a f***ing disaster.

#nocfbeni

You don't want to see someone with the body of a character from RBI Baseball for the NES roaming CF?

Concur. Completely. Every time someone suggests moving Beni to CF I ask myself if that person can remember what having Beni in CF looked like. Ugh.

I know you won't want to hear this, but the numbers back up your and my opinions.

Career UZR/150

LF:+1.6 in 3518 innings

CF: -3.4in 525 innings

Career DRS:

LF: +9

CF:-9

Pure coincidence. :D

We will tender him and trade him. JBJ is still an elite defensive outfielder in one of the most impactful defensive positions. We might not get a lot because his bat is so streaky, but I believe he still retains value. We really missed out on trading JBJ after the 2018 WS win though, that was his peak market value and we could have gotten something significant in terms of prospects that would be saving us even more salary today. Now we'll pretty much take what the market gives.

Blind squirrel.

Broken clock.

Do blind squirrels ever really find nuts? Seems to me they find the underside of tires more often...
