Sterling is a homer and a twit. Most of the garbage out of his mouth comes right from the mouth of Cashman and Levine. Suzan Waldman is the same, except her voice sounds like you’re gutting a live cat with a spoon. Neither of them speak for Yankee fans in general.

 

The Pedroia watch thing was stupid. He shouldn’t have done it, but it was harmless. This Astros thing isn’t harmless. This is an organizational cheating ring concocted from the top and enacted with the sole purpose of gaining an advantage in game that is explicitly illegal. This illegal (baseball wise) activity propelled their team to winning the WS and continued on to their being 7 outs away from a second. Some of the biggest teams in baseball were eliminated by these cheaters. Also, fans aren’t really flocking to baseball. This cheating scandal is bringing eyes to the game in a negative way. With everyone jockeying for millennials’ eyes and dollars, an overreaction to this is the only acceptable answer. It also sets an example and a precedent to deter teams from doing this ever again

 

And as a Yankee fan, I could care less if Cora gets suspended or fined. I want Houston to suffer. Punishing the Sox isn’t going to achieve that goal

I think with all the damning info out there now, this is not speculation. You've got a former player confirming this. You have an email from an exec asking for it. You've had tons of evidence of whistling and banging before breaking pitches. Now you have Cora "cooperating in full". The s***** thing is, penalizing Cora in terms of a suspension penalizes the sox, who did absolutely nothing wrong. Same with the Mets. So while I think one is coming, I don't think that's entirely fair to a team that hired him as a manager. For me, if Cora and Beltran got a huge fine and no suspension, I would be ok with that. Personally penalize them, but don't hurt their teams. For the Astros, I deliver a kill shot. Dock them multiple first rounders. Eliminate their IFA fund. Suspend Hinch and Luhnow for at least a season. When the integrity of the game is at risk, especially when trying to draw in the snowflake generation, you have to overreact or risk losing people who think the game is rigged.

I have to wonder if there would be as much indignation had the Astros defeated, say, the Twins or the Red Sox in that series.

I think they should award the Yankees the 2017, 2018 and 2019 World Series Championships.

Alex Cora led what many consider to be the greatest Red Sox team ever, the 2018 World Champions. He was chosen, in part, because of his affiliation with the 2017 Champion Houston Astros. Now that Astros team is in the cross-hairs of the Commissioner for a blatant cheating scandal, and Alex Cora was reportedly a big part of it. Should we change how we view him?

 

Peeping Particulars

 

Old friend Evan Drellich and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic have all the particulars. The short and sweet version is there was a camera (perhaps still is?) in center field at Minute Maid Park that would look at the signs from the opposing catcher behind the plate. The feed was sent to a TV on the dugout steps leading down to the clubhouse and then transferred to the batter. A loud bang on a trashcan relayed the signal to the batter.

 

All of this happened in real time, and was rather ruthlessly efficient. Here are the numbers from the 2017 Postseason:

 

Red Sox fans may remember getting blown out by the Astros in the 2017 ALDS 8-2 in both of the opening games in Houston. On the one hand you have to hand it to the athletes to disseminate a bang or some other signal and react in mere seconds. On the other, when a MLB batter knows what’s coming it’s practically a futile enterprise for the pitcher.

It would be one thing if this was being reported by only Evan Drellich. He was a beat writer for the Astros, then the Red Sox, but for whatever reason was not renewed by multiple media outlets and has now landed at The Athletic. But Ken Rosenthal is a well respected long time national writer who is not known for click bait. These are not idle ‘sources say’ reports.

MLB is investigating. The 2017 Red Sox were fined for their use of Apple Watches. But that was sniffed out and dealt with during the season. The Astros are accused of (and audio of trash cans being hit can be found) using the sign stealing system during the playoffs. There is sufficient buzz about a large fine or draft pick penalties coming that this may be more than a slap on the wrist.

After the Red Sox lost the 2017 ALDS, John Farrell was fired and has yet to find work in baseball, although he is up for the bench coach of the Cubs. Joe Girardi was fired after losing to the Astros with the Yankees in the ALCS that year. Girardi just found work as the Phillies manager.

 

These are not idle nothings. People’s careers were directly affected, and there was franchise leadership upheaval of multiple clubs.

 

If in fact Alex Cora was a big part of this cheating scandal, it certainly puts a permanent stain on his reputation. There are plenty of things to love about Alex Cora as a person, a leader, a teammate, a brother, and a son. But no one’s perfect. Turns out Cora’s spring training plans aren’t the only thing to be disappointed in.

Are Yankee fans the only ones who don't acknowledge that MLB has said those tests were inconclusive, or that there were numerous other issues with the leaked names?

 

Yankee Fan Steroid logic seems to revolve heavily around the uniform the player wore. Ortiz - named on a suspect list for an unnamed substance that might have actually been legal st the time - DEFINTELY GUILTY. Andy Pettitte - named by his supplier in the Mitchell Report, confessed, but said the oft-used "just one time" line that every named player pulled out of his ass - Innocent...

i feel more cheated by giambi in 2003 and his steroid homeruns then i do by the astros in 2017 with their garbage can banging.

I had a teammate who was drafted in 02 and made a cup of coffee in the bigs. In the minors, it was rampant. In the majors, it was rampant. Everyone was looking for an edge. Think about it. For a lot of these guys, baseball is their only way to make a living. Lots of them didn’t have degrees or they have degrees that are unusable and they didn’t put in the work to earn them because they were ball players. Now they get to the minors and find out they aren’t good enough and they’re just gonna take their lumps and go home? Hell no. You take every edge possible and try to turn that into a winning lottery ticket that sets you and your family up for life.
