But they will lose 76 jobs if they ever go to robot umps...

but add 150 jobs to create and maintain the robot umps!

plus we can make them run on coal so we can keep the coal miners working!

And any batter struck by a pitch is out. That should speed things up...

The would-be hitter might be reluctant to enter the batter's box. Kinda like dodge ball with a hardball.:)

Robots have no place on the baseball field . They have already taken over too much as it is . The best solution is to stop making robots . So far , they have not figured out how to reproduce themselves .

They make not have figured it out, but they will be doing it soon.

Promiscuous robots . Coming soon . At a theater near you.

Promiscuous Robots was the name of my band in high school...

Nah, it's just robots building robots. Strictly asexual and G-rated.

.

And already an animated movie. "Robots" starring Ewen MacGregor, Hallie Berry, Robin Williams and Jim Broadbent...

Sam Kennedy today:

"John and Tom and myself have just entered the research phase for a Pres of baseball ops. We are going to take our time."

Sam, do you know what month it is? Are you telling me that John Henry was even less prepared for this than he appeared to be at the time of the DD announcement?

It was fairly obvious when the job of team President had simply passed Larry by. JH might be right on the edge of the same sort of reality.

In men’s slow pitch only. I assume this is 16 inch?

No it is the standard sized ball where starting with a 1 and 1 count and striking out on a foul ball ate meant to speed up the game. You don't get a lot of balls thrown by you in slow pitch.

The last time I played was 20 years ago (That's hard to believe. Time does fly, doesn't it!) and the game I played then was the 6' arc. We started with a 0-0 count and a foul ball on the 3rd strike was an out. At that arc it's easy to make contact with the ball and that third strike rule made it impossible for a hitter to keep fouling off pitches until he got a pitch he could hit out.

Of course it also made it easier for a smart pitcher to throw inside pitches after two strikes and wait for the hitter to pull one of them foul. :-)

There are a few ball sizes, but I’m guessing you mean 12 inch.

I’m in Chicago, where all the slow pitch leagues are 16 inch and no one uses gloves. Guessing your league differs on both counts...

The arc has to be over 6 feet but less than 12. Because we play two games, sometimes we adopt the starting count of 1 and 1 since a lot of guys take the first pitch anyway. I played fast pitch when I was 20 and didn't pick up slow pitch until I was 69. I like an active sport better than golf.

True. We use a 12 inch ball. Women may use an 11 inch ball. An 80 something woman living close to us was married to a big name in Chicago softball and they used the larger ball. Our fences tend to run 300 feet and few guys in the 75 and over age bracket can hit it over those fences. I play 2 or 3 times a week and play year round but in different locations.

See what happens when we're not competitive? We're talking slow pitch softball.......ugh

In our softball league, if you play in a 'lower league',you are allowed to hit 3 home runs, anything after that is an out....how's that for a crazy rule? (it's to prevent ringers from showing up)

I certainly remember the name.

The King and his Court were a four man softball team . A pitcher ( Feigner ) , catcher and two fielders . They toured the country playing , and regularly beating , regulation softball teams . They were all good hitters , and Feigner was tougher to hit than Nolan Ryan .

If I'm not mistaken there was an article or two about them in Sports Illustrated, way back in the days when Sports Illustrated was a really good magazine.

yup. they actually toured around and beat MiLB teams too. the baseball hitters could not adapt to the distance/speed for the 1 game expositions...

And they didn't use four players for defense. Feigner added a fourth "fielder" just in case his team loaded the bases, they still needed someone to bat...

Yep, 6'-12'.

I played baseball until the leagues dried up around here when I was in my late 20's, then I turned to the only thing available to me that resembled baseball. I played until I was 52, when my throwing shoulder stopped cooperating with me. I was given the choice between surgery and giving up softball and took Door #2. I still miss it.

"My" league did the same thing. I actually liked that rule for softball because it relies more on defense. The 'higher' leagues are composed of a team of guys whose only ability is to hit the ball over the fence. Yawn.
