You two probably haven't noticed that JBJ hasn't been starting against lefties on this trip. The Angels starter was another lefty.

I understand that . But was it really a good move today ?

Alex is a big believer in loading RH hitters against LH starters, and JBJ has bad splits, it's as simple as that.

But when your RH hitters are guys like Owings and Gorkys and they do squat, some questioning will occur.

I get the lefty / righty matchup platoon thing . But Bradley has played some big games against lefty starters . Do you really want to sit him for Gorkys , who wouldn't even be here except for the roster expansions?

DD went out and got Pearce, last year, so he could sit Moreland vs LHPs, despite him having "some big games" vs lefty starters.

How did WTF handle that one?

Look, I agree on not playing Gorkys over JBJ vs a LH'd starter, but we've sat JBJ vs many lefties all year and through the years... sometimes so guys like Travis can play.

Moreland is not a 160 game guy. That pickup was necessary. The resigning? Not so much.

I’m OK with JBj sitting vs a lefty to get JDM and Vaz in the lineup. Or for Chavis and JDM earlier this season when chavis was hot. But gorkys? When every single game is “must win”? No. Just no.

Cora made a veiled statement on players hitting 220 ? Yet he promotes Gorky ? Cora is over his skis

He’s lost. The season is over.

Apparently Hernandez did well against LHP in AAA ball. I can't remember his numbers, but I read it somewhere. We all know what JBJ can do-unfortunately.

.941 OPS vs LHPs at AAA this year in 105 ABs.

(Ockimey has been over .900 two years in a row vs RHPs, so why isn't he playing?)

Gorkster has experience at the major league level.

Let's be fair. DD has a major hand in this too.

DD is the reason the best we can do for late-season lineup 'bolstering' is Owings and Gorkys.

Yes, as far back as 2012. His career OPS vs LHPs is .615 (although .673 in 2018 in 150+ PAs). Not better than JBJ (.668 career v L).

Gorkys and Owings are both examples of DD doing a pitiful job with reinforcements this year.

Agreed, but playing them is on Cora.

Marco, JBJ and Travis are all better choices... maybe even Dalbec, Chatham & Ockimey.

We have about 15-20 guys on the 40 man roster that wouldn't be missed by trading or DFA'ing. Why not add a few guys that will have to be added as rule 5 anyways and see what they have, instead of those two clowns?

Even if you had the numbers, it’s probably a small and irrelevant sample size against minor league southpaws over one season.

Gorkys has had significant MLB experience. And in that experience, he had limited success against MLB LHP to the tune of a .615 OPS.

Of course, this is also a limited sample size of 420 PA spread out over 8 years. But the fact that the 31yo Hernandez was kept off the field vs LHP so much in the past 8 seasons also says something...

Not entirely. I would have to think the two discuss these moves together. When they agreed to bring up Owings it would have been pretty crazy for Cora to then not play him.

Just my take.

Maybe play him in emergency situations, yes.

You are right, though, DD was the guy who made the final call to put him on the 25, and if Cora said no, who knows...

The fact that JBJ sat all 3 games vs. LH starters does make one wonder if they're unhappy with him in some way. Maybe they've been working with him on his approach against lefties and he hasn't been following advice or whatever. It is a bit of a shocker that he would sit all 3.

This could very well be an indication that the Red Sox are ready to unload JBJ in the upcoming off season. Very seldom would a team sit one of it's valued player in a postseason drive. Since his promotion to the big league JBJ has struggled at the plate every year with an inconsistent bat now the Red Sox only sees his true value in a defensive manner. The wait till next year banner has run it's course with the very same outcome year after year for the 30 yrs old veteran who has a declining avg as each year goes by it's highly unlikely he's going to miraculously start hitting after 7 seasons in the MLB. Anyways the Red Sox need find the money to keep Mookie Betts some harsh decisions will be taken this off season regarding the Red Sox as a team.

I would suggest that the Sox are as much sending JBJ a message as sending us a message. The message is, we no longer can claim we have any reasonable expectation of a rotation that we can plan around and therefore we no longer need to put a premium defensive CFer that is an unreliable hitter in CF every day. We can go with a "passable" defender in CF that is a more reliable hitter.

Beni would not be more than passible in CF and Mookie would not be more than passable in that position either. The problem with moving Mookie there is you move him out of the position he appears to have been born for.....RF and most particularly RF in Fenway Park. So if I had to guess, JBJ is gone. Beni moves to CF and the Sox get themselves a LFer that is a hitter from someplace.

Then again, Mookie might not be here in 2020 either.

It just shows how unprepared DD is. He didn’t even have a expensive reliever to release so he could clear money for a weak side platoon for JBJ...

Last night showed how much confidence the management has in JBJ for his offensive capabilities NONE when a veteran player is pulled for a life long minor leaguer in a playoff drive. This should tell you going forward that he might not be around much longer especially as an everyday player.

Possibly so. But still, it put a man at second with Mookie and Raffy coming up. They just didn't get it done.
