8 in the loss column to the A's.

The towel has been thrown in.

No moves at the deadline with $3-4M to spare was the signal.

I don't think Cora has thrown in the towel, and I don't think any deadline move was going to be the big difference-maker.

But our chances are obviously still very slim.

When you go to the Boss for help to fill some holes, and he says “Play better!!”, it’s not a good sign...

It all depends on the interpretation. To a Pollyanna it could sound like this: 'You guys are already good enough to get this done. You just have to play up to your potential, which we know you can and will do!'

It felt like that had been failing for months

Yep. But it's a long freakin' season.

I'm not by any means comparing this year to 2004, but in 2004 the team played .500 ball for 3 months, leading to Shaughnessy's famous 'frauds' line.

Maybe we need Christian Vazquez to punch Aaron Judge in the face?

The A's have played three fewer games . I don't much care what the fangraphs geeks say . My local wise guy , Paul " Needlenose " Minagge says , " I'm not giving odds on the Red Sox . They have the talent and experience to get it done ." Much like me , old " Needlenose " has a pretty good track record on these things.

Vegas currently has the Red Sox at 100 to 1 to win the pennant and 200 to 1 to win the World Series.

You should be getting some money down.

I will get right on that . Those are attractive odds for catching two teams who are not as good or as experienced in pennant race baseball. And , as we all know , anything can happen in the post season . Well worth a bet . But not with " Needlenose ".

I've always expected the possibility of a TB collapse, but it's another story with Oakland and Cleveland--and we have to bounce one of these two. I don't know the A's remaining schedule, but a lot will depend on that, I guess too.

Watching Shane Green perform these past two nights, I wonder if we made any serious attempt to get him at the deadline. He sure seems to be helping the Braves.

Given the obvious Dombrowski-Greene connection, I normally would be flat out surprised if Dombrowski didn’t make an attempt to get Greene, or at least assume he had a good reason for passing.

But the way Apathy Dave has been this year, I’m not sure of anything...

He made the move to acquire a fifth starter. How did that turn out? What relievers were out there? It's always easy after the fact to pick and choose which players we should have gone after.

We gave up scraps for Cashner. We gave up scraps, in the past, for guys like Reed, and Eovaldi and Pearce. I wasn't for trading top prospects for a top rental RP'er, but showing no effort at all, even a symbolic one, sowed, to me, the towel was being thrown in.

We were already treading water at the deadline. The bullpen should have been addressed much earlier.

I agree, but once it wasn't and it became clear that we were not being allowed to go over the max line, waiting until a time when pro-rated contracts would allow us to obtain better pitchers than we could have gotten for $3-4M last winter or in an early season trade.

Oakland 7 tough games left: 3 on road vs NYY, and 4 on road vs Houston... all the others are winnable games for them... very favorable at the end. They should be tough to dislodge from their current position. And we know how Cleveland plays the game.

We have 7 games coming up with the Yankees and Minnesota. No walk in the park and we haven't played well at home.
