apparently JH doesnt believe in player insurance.

IIRC we've had this discussion before (Pedey?) and while nobody seems to know for certain the consensus is that the Sox don't insure their players because the cost is prohibitive.

As much as they get hurt, maybe we need to revisit that strategy.

Another look at the 2020 Red Sox 40 Man Roster:

1) Assume Pedey goes on the 60 Day DL, so he does not take up an official slot.

2) Assume none of our free agents return.

3) Assume JBJ and JD are gone, somehow- some where.

4) Here's how I see the rest...

16 Keepers: Devers, Betts, Bogaerts, Sale, ERod, Benintendi, Vazquez, Workman, D Hernandez, Barnes, Walden, Chavez, Taylor, Price, Eovaldi, Lin

14 Borderline: Johnson, Marco Hernandez, Weber, Velazquez, Brasier, Chacin, Shawaryn, Brewer, Lakins, Travis, Poyner, Reyes, Kelley, Centeno

2 Likely Traded or Non Tendered: Hembree, Leon (may be re-signed after non tender)

8 Open Slots:

9 Rule 5 Possibilities:

2 Keepers: Dalbec, Chatham

2 Borderline: Kyle Hart, Marcus Wilson

5 Long Shots: Josh Ockimey, Pedro Castellanos, Cole Sturgeon, Eduard Bazaedo, Jhonathan Diaz

Chances are, we have several slots open for free agency, but I do not see a roster crunch in any form this winter. I only see 18-20 guys that are keepers.

My guess is we'll see a lot of wheeling and dealing- many small/minor deals.

A couple of high interest minor league pitchers not mentioned are Mata and Houck. If either caqn fill a starter role we are in much better shape. I would hope the new pitching coach, reportedly Buch, will change the basic approach to more aggressive command of the strike zone. I didn't like the high walk rate we had last season.

I doubt either Houck or Mata make the 40 man roster right away, as there is no reason to add them just yet. I do think there is a chance either or both make their debuts at some point this season, but I would be surprised if it was in April. And there is no reason to put either on the 40 man roster before his debut, as they do not need to be protected.

The first 40 man roster decisions will be made in December and are strictly related to the Rule 5 draft. The interesting this is, you can't bury players on the 60 man IL during the offseason to open up spots, so Pedroia will have a spot unless the Sox DFA him (a move that sounds harsher than it is; no one is claiming him.)

The Sox might deal a non-40 man prospect or two to tap into the abundance of San Diego prospects who cannot be covered, like we did last season to get Colten Brewer...

Good points. I did not mention these two because both are not Rule 5 until after 2020, but they could certainly be added to the 40 man roster, if we feel they can help on the 25 man roster at some point, next year. I doubt either is added by opening day, although they may get a ST'ing invite.

so why are we waiting until mid november to go see doc?

It is a tad later than originally thought.

I'm sure that's no reason for concern though. :P

Now there is talk of a potential trade of one of our starting pitchers to the Texas Rangers. Could be Price but also could be Sale.

He should do them before extensions, though.

I expect he'd do it if compensated fairly by the team.

Maybe but I don’t think the Celebrity Surgeon is struggling to put food on the table...
