Sorry to correct you again, but Eovaldi's 'loose bodies' were actually not discovered until after he made his 4th start of the season on April 17.

So now you're correcting other people's corrections?

The coffin has so many nails in it, nobody can open it.

What’s with this nail in the coffin analogy? Coffins have lids with hinges...

It’s a saying from the olden days when you were buried in a pine box that was nailed shut

- nail in the coffin

- dog that won't hunt

- can't find own ass with two hands and a hunting dog

- like watching paint dry

There is plenty of ole' timey stuff that aptly describes the Sox 2019 effort. Most of it applies to Manfred the Magnificent and his squads of spreadsheet boys too. Final nail not quite in MLB coffin yet...but they sure hammered a number of them home this year.

It’s outdated now. My point. We need new cliches.

And I want someone to explain to me “kill two birds with one stone.” When was this ever necessary? In what time period did we have an abundance of problem birds and a shortage of stones? I think this one needs replacing too.

I do love some of the old school sayings. Raining cats and dogs dates back to thatch roofs where the animals would sleep in the thatch and with a heavy rain they’d fall out. A wake is usually multiple days prior to burial because people back in the old days would drink liquor that was either contaminated or that was imbibed from lead cups which could lead to prolonged unresponsive ness. You held a wake to see if they’d wake up.

Either way, the wake up never happened for the Sox this year. The nails are in the coffin.

How 'bout 'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.'

Which automatically triggers the 'Hmmm, not when it comes to sex' response. Didn't the originator of the expression get that?

3-51 when trailing after 7

be interesting to see that record from 2018 campaign.

In 2018, the Sox were 12-43 when trailing after 7.

The winning % was better in such games last year.

Where does one find those numbers, Kimmi?

Hmmm....

So, 3-51 vs 12-43 is a 9 game swing.

That's more than the blown save swing (27 to 20).

Also interesting to see the same stat for other teams this year.

Not sure where to find the data.

Yankees are 8-39. Astros are 10-39. Twins are 8-41.

Also, we are 63-9 when leading after 7. The Yankees are 76-5. The Astros are 76-6. The Twins are 68-8.

The data is at BR, under Scoring, in the Inning by Inning W-L table. :)

Some of these numbers would lead you to believe we're 'late inning chokers' this year.

But we're 9-5 in extra inning games.

As some would say, you can find a stat to support any position.

How does that 9-5 compare to last year.

And, BTW, those extra inning wins usually were supported by excellent pen work, sometimes for over 7 innings.

Our bullpen has not been good in terms of save %. That said, IMO, they are far from the biggest reason the team has the record that it currently has. Starting pitching is #1, which indirectly affects the effectiveness of the bullpen. And as good as our overall offense numbers have been, they have been (especially earlier in the year) inconsistent and unable to tack on after scoring early.

During a game a few nights ago, Eck said that when the starting pitcher went at least 5 innings giving up 3 or fewer runs (not even a quality start), the team has a .750 ish winning %. That's rather telling.

The other things is that most other offenses improved while ours kinda stayed the same. Bogey, Devers and Vaz made up for drop-offs from JD & Betts.

And if you have two birds in the bush, is that when you're supposed to kill them with one stone?

Probably so. But it sounds like no easy task.
