I'm inclined to agree baseball is different if only because the dynamics of hitting and pitching are so variable. However. Dave Roberts key theft of 2d base in the 2004 ALCS was definitely clutch because it was doable, essential, and not without risk. You could probably make a similar argument for Beni's game-ending grab in Houston last October.

I'm in complete agreement. It's the unique skills and variables of hitting and pitching that make baseball so different.

did you watch the 2017 super bowl?. the winning team had a 0.2% chance of winning that game deep into the 3rd quarter.

Seriously, how can you compare one game plus Brady played a heroic part in winning that game. Red Sox have an almost impossible feat facing them with one of their best pitcher sideline plus Oakland and TB Rays keeps on winning their games the writing is on the wall.

Yes I did but you can't compare the 2004 Red Sox who were playing close to .600 baseball plus they were leading the wildcard standings. Unlike today where they're playing just above .500 baseball and losing ground in wildcard standings.

Our chances are wavering between slim and nonexistent. There's really no need to go on and on about it.

Fair. my next retort will be the 2007 Colorado Rockies. that is exactly what we need to happen.

probable? no way

possible? yes

until that second answer mathematically turns to "no" you can count on me posting HOPE in this thread.

You can hope in one hand and s*** in the other and see which one fills up first. For a guy to be ragging hard on the Yanks and their march to 100+ wins, I am floored by your insistence that your squad is somehow going to make it even close to the post season. The sox have fallen off the cliff. You got your title. Now you have to pay the piper. You'll have hope into September. You'll have hope into August and September next year, the following years will have little to no hope from day 1.

all fair points. although hope isnt a physical matter thing so the poop hand will always fill first.

of couse it is coming from the poster that predicted the yankees to finish ahead of the red sox the past 3 seasons and to beat the red sox in the 2018 ALDS.

Or the 2002 Oakland A's. Or the Sox need to bring in Joe Morgan and relive 1988's Morgan Magic!

Is Morgan still alive?

The 1995 Seattle Mainers are another good example. They were 12.5 games out on August 20th and still won the AL West....

that Morgan Magic stretch in 88 was amazing. and then damn Oakland in the postseason....

Our problem is we have to catch two teams. I daresay that ramps up the odds against us.

Ah but we also don't have a 12.5 game gap to close...

Well, that's kinda the point of the phrase, lol. I did predict the Yanks would finish first last year. They won 100 games, so it isn't like they slouched. No way to predict the sox would win 108. The ALDS was an uber clusterf*** of management. Our asshat manager didn't go to the strength of his team until the final two games were pretty much decided. He had a pen that has proven capable of pitching a full game yet he allowed Sevy to get buried and CC to cough it up in game 4. No way you let Cardiac Cripple have the ball in an elimination game. He seems to love to do it, though, as he did it in 2017 twice and last year. Maybe he will learn his lesson this season

The Yanks were the only team that showed fire against the sox. The Astros won game 1, then s*** on themselves. The Dodgers didn't show any life the whole series. The Yanks came back and almost won game 1, they pounded Price in game 2. The tide turned when Boone left Sevy out there to die when he clearly had nothing. He didn't treat it like a PO game. He treated it like a cold April getaway game

Rays play the Orioles next 4 games. Mariners helped us, but we didn't take advantage of it. The Yanks are getting beat by good teams now, no more Orioles. They need to win to help us, today.

We need something crazy, way out there. Orioles sweeping the Rays.

A's play Giants, tougher series. Need help. It happens.

Sox need todays just to start to get good feelings.

Still on the Train.

Crap happens. We better hope for it.

Crap certainly does happens and it seems, mostly to us. What strikes me is the lack of fire shown. The team goes through the motions. Maybe Pedroia would have produced that fire but no such luck. The guys who seem to push a little are Devers and Vaz. Maybe Cora should go out and kick a little dirt on home plate or kick ass. The talent is there offensively, but it doesn't happen.

I'll make a deal, when the Sox are eliminated that's when I will stop Posting, we still have a chance.

Lets get this Train rolling again.

Go to store get bigger Rally Caps.

Sure, we still have a chance. One source I read put that chance at 2%. The season is essentially, though not mathematically, over.

This forum thread reminds me how very fortunate I am to not be following the Mariners annually.

Indeed. The Red Sox are on pace to finish with a better record than the Seattle Mariners for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons.

And this year the Mariners should break their tie with the Red Sox for the most last-place finishes this decade.

The Red Sox have four World Series titles this millenium while the Mariners have never been to the World Series. That's what makes each franchise special.

Their trajectories may be shifting ... or not.
