I'm hopeful Wright can be helpful. The suspension may have helped him not rush the knee recovery. Velazquez & Johnson have not done well in long relief or spot starts. Maybe Wright can be a big improvement in that area.

66 days and counting...

So the 60 day IL designation does not actually indicate a further setback in Nate's strong but troubled arm ?

It's just a move to open a spot on the 40 man roster . Haven't heard any update on Eovaldi in the past few days .

Yes, putting Eovaldi on the 60 day (retroactive to 66 days ago) just prolongs the 40 man roster choice needed to be made.

The upcoming 25 man roster moves are more interesting and problematic.

Players expected back at some point:

Thornburg (no options)

DFA/Trade or replace Shawaryn

Hembree (no options)

Replace Josh Taylor or Johnson (out of options)

Velazquez

Replace Johnson (out of options) or keep in AAA

Eovaldi

Replace Johnson (out of options- trade), Brewer or DFA Thornburg

Moreland (no options)

Replace Marco Hernandez or trade/DFA Nunez

Pearce (no options)

Trade/DFA or replace Nunez (trade/DFA)

Lin

Keep in AAA

Wright will probably be helpful.

That said, I'm not happy about his return.

I don’t know how helpful he can be. He has never been the same since.... Well you know.

As for his personal life missteps, I think that baseball and the law have a process to impose punishment. After they pay the penalty, they shouldn’t be denied the ability to practice their trade.

I agree. The penalties are what they are.

I understand the hate towards Wright, but I would immediately make him the #5 starter. He’s better than the other options and Eovaldi will help this team out of the bullpen, where our weakness is greatest. Remember, he is not on the postseason roster, which is perfect, since teams don’t carry 5 starters anyways.

Only issue is how little usage he’s had the past few years. I know he’s a knuckler, but can he step in and give 80-100 IP the rest of the year?

If so, I do prefer him over Johnson/Velasquez/etc...

the good about him, is that he is a spare part at this point. I think he gives you more than anyone else. Run him into the ground. Again, it doesn’t really matter if he breaks down, he’s not allowed to be on the postseason roster anyways bc if his suspension.

If it keeps Ryan Weber from starting more games, it’s a good thing...

I think Thornburg, Johnson and Pearce are definitly the ones at risk for their careers in Boston, and maybe anywhere. Hernandez can be given a legit shot next ST, when Pedey can't answer the bell for good, Lin is a classic AAAA'er hole plugger, going nowhere, as is Sam Travis. Nunez does seem to have a strange 9 lives, especially with Cora, so I suspect he sticks around for thr remainder of 2019. Any of the above could be had in a multi-player trade, and if DD tried to put together a "super package" for a primo pitcher (starter or relief, he may force one or two of these guys on some other team. Pearce's salary offload could pay for a reliever.

Putting aside my absolute hate and disgust for Wright I do agree.... What do we have to lose? If he can deliver us 6 decent innings and give us a chance to win I will take it.... Only way to find out is by putting him in the 5th spot in the rotation and letting him have at it. Though keep in mind Johnson was actually very good his last start.

I cannot imagine any combination of Pearce, Thornburg, Travis, Lin, and Hernandez bringing back a reliever worth acquiring. Johnson is a tough call, as he is cheap, controllable, and left-handed. But you’d need a GM who values him a lot more than me. I think every team already has a Brian Johnson or two somewhere in their system already. Heck some of them might even be named Brian Johnson.

I guess if you’re taking back a salary dump like Mark Melancon or Jeff Samardzija, it might work. Maybe...

Those guys could be "had" , certainly not desired by any GM. The "super package" concept is when some like a Benintendi, or better is the key player and DD forces out another player as part of the package.

Of course if the Sox trade one of their starters in a “super package” for a primo pitcher, that does leave a hole in the lineup.

Let’s say the Sox deal Benintendi to the Dodgers for Julio Urias (which isn’t likely IMO). Who plays LF? We maxed out Beni’s trade value in that deal. The only Sox minor leaguers with MLB OF experience are Castillo, Travis and Chris Owings. Will the Sox pawn off enough salary to promote Castillo? If not, the other choices are sort of pathetic...

We'd probably go with a mix of JD (who DH's? Pearce when he returns?) Holt, Pearce and maybe Nunez.

Not pretty.

I used to be a Wright fan.

Now I am just tired of his story.

I expect very little from him if he can not pitch multiple innings every 5 days.

Your opinion is a fair one, and mine maybe not so fair, but I can't help it.

I still have not been able to fully embrace Chavis either.

You’re not exactly selling me on the idea of dealing Benintendi for a pitcher...
