no one ever gets shot in the USA!

True, but it's much safer here than in DR. UN? has told me this over and over and he has first hand experience since he actually lives down there.

tell that to a young black male living in chicago. (or any urban area). not really wanting to debate it as this should be about David Ortiz but the fact is more citizens are killed yearly by gunfire in the USA then any other country on the planet except brazil.

Brazil: 43,000

USA: 37,000

3rd place dips quite a bit from the gun death leaders with Mexico coming in at 15,000 (funny how the USA is more than 2x more then Mexico but all we hear is how there are so many "bad dudes" in Mexico. oh well.)

DR is way down the list with 1,000 deaths.

OK so our population is waaaaay more than DR. right?

so how about gun deaths per 100,000 citizens?

USA: 10.6

DR: 10.6

pick your poison....

prayers for Papi and his family.

Probably not a robbery, but given the number of stories coming out of the DR about wealthy athletes being robbed, I'm willing to consider that this might have been an acquaintance or hanger-on who asked Ortiz for money and was turned down. Not that it matters, at this point. All I care about is Ortiz pulling through. This is a bizarre situation and even though this has happened before with MLB players in the DR It's still unbelievable.

This video makes it look like an execution attempt. The dude who shot Ortiz got the absolutely s*** beaten out of him, and there is some graphic videos all over twitter. Dude got what he deserved. What a piece of s***.

Shooting Big Papi in the DR is basically like what would have happened if you had shot Mr. Rogers here in the USA. No one is helping you escape that s***, you'll be lucky if the police drag you out of the mob while you're still alive.

If you isolate Chicago and use gun deaths per capita, it’s akin to Afghanistan and Iraq. The crazy thing is, the cities with the highest rates of gun violence are in states with incredibly strict gun laws. Gang members don’t care about gun laws and the overwhelming majority of the perpetrators and victims are due to gang affiliation.

The DR is different. If you look like you have money, you’re a target. Papi was different than what the standard narrative usually is. That narrative is the rich guy is mugged and shot. This was no robbery. This looked like a hit.

You're only looking at gun violence. If you look at all homicide rates, you are almost 3x more likely to be murdered in the DR than the US. US gun death is propped up by a high suicide rate (nearly twice as many suicides by gun than homicides).

Get some stats for knife and machete deaths. Those are the weapons of choice.

I dont know how this terrible incident turns into a US sucks rant. Less than a week after the 75th anniversary of D-Day, I am very sensitive to the hate US BS. If it sucks here so much, the borders are open in both directions. As for the Dominicans that I know, they are quite open about how unsafe it is. I’ll take their word for it.

It was definitely an assassination attempt. We don’t know the motive, but I think we can rule out a paid assassin as he had no chance of escaping apprehension. It could have been revenge. It doesn’t really matter. I hope the big guy pulls through.

Pedro’s compound has a security booth with an armed guard, and I think stuff has happened there too.

no one is saying the USA sucks.

point taken about the machete and other deaths. the homocide rate is much higher in DR then USA. (omitting US Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico which are both higher than DR).

I just saw Papi's last IG Story post. looks like he had his kids at indoor go kart track yesterday afternoon right before this craziness. glad his kids did not get shot at.

At times you come across to me as someone that has a knee jerk reaction to bash the US. Maybe I am wrong. Communication on the internet is not ideal. I think you are a good guy, and enjoy your posts about baseball and lots of other things.

i love the USA. my job affords me to travel to many countries. many i would never have thought of going to ( to name a few of the really random ones: Russia, Africa, Thailand, Ukraine, Hungary, Taiwan, Belarus, Turkey, Bulgaria)....i have been to every south/central american country at least 2x.

I would not want to live anywhere else on the planet for sure.

I think sometimes my responses are reflective of the impact that i see the USA policies have caused around the globe. most times i truly believe we are only trying to help. other times it seems like we have alternate agendas. the citizens of the countries tend to believe the latter.....

Latest info from CNN:

Here's what we know so far about the attack:

The shooting: Ortiz was shot in the back at a club in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday, according to police, Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesperson for the Dominican National Police, told CNN.

His condition: Ortiz, who is recovering from surgery, is in stable condition and “out of danger,” Mejia said.

The suspects: Multiple people have been detained in relation to the shooting, the police spokesperson tells CNN. Ortiz was shot by a person on a motorcycle, but it's unclear whether that individual is in custody.

The aftermath of the shooting: One of the suspects is being treated at a local hospital in the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Health Service said in a statement. The suspect was hit and attacked by bystanders immediately after Ortiz was shot.

It is crazy that this might involve more than one person.

I'm not trying to bash DR either. It's a beautiful country and I had a great time when I was there. Right now, for many reasons, it's just not a real safe place to be.

They say that he is stable, but with that organ damage, I don't think that he is out of the woods.

the way he gets to live the rest of his life has changed forever. jacksonianmarch can probably shed further light on this.

such a sad thing to happen to such a seemingly great man. seems to be very kind, generous, family oriented, helps community. i had the pleasure to meet him 13 years ago at Citizens Bank Park. he picked up my son, pinched his cheeks, and signed his red sox onesie. super charismatic, larger than life superstar. but very very much relatable.

Ortiz is so lucky that shooter didn't have that extra ounce of conviction in walking up and shooting him execution style. His back was turned and he wouldn't have even saw it coming.

I wonder if this will change his willingness to go to certain areas. I know it would for me.

Lucky just one shot.

Lucky not a head shot.

It was definitely not a robbery.

Nobody goes into a super crowded place, walk up to a sitting person and just shoot him in the back and run away.

It was a hit- either by some sort of twisted fame seeker or someone holding a serious grudge.

Now I agree with you on this. Nobody sent him there to kill David Ortiz. This wasn't sanctioned. I believe this was somebody looking for notoriety. If it was somebody known to Ortiz it may have already been exposed through the media. Thankfully it was a sloppy attempt.

This world is going to Hell in a handbasket.

some good news (i think):

David Ortiz is expected to be flown from the Dominican Republic to Boston on Monday afternoon for further treatment of a gunshot wound, and answered yes and no questions from family members, according to one of his associates.

Leo Lopez, Ortiz's assistant, told USA TODAY Sports that Ortiz's family is hopeful he will be on his way to Boston by 4 p.m. ET on Monday, via a plane sent by the Red Sox. Lopez said doctors were examining Ortiz early Monday afternoon to determine whether his condition was sufficiently stable to travel.

"Just yes or no. Not a lot of words, but he can talk," Lopez said of Ortiz.

The Red Sox said in a statement that they "offered David's family all available resources to aid his recovery." He is expected to receive further treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Stay classy NY Post!

Ortiz, who is recovering from surgery — in which parts of his intestines and colon, as well as his gallbladder, were removed — is married to Tiffany Ortiz and has three children.

In regards to the arguments about the Ortiz, the US and the DR: While the Dominican Republic has some very sketchy s*** going on and isn't the safest place, unfortunately this type of s*** happens in the US also. Rapper Nipsey Hussle, who is comparable to Ortiz in the fact that he was a rich, well known millionaire, who gave back to his community and was loved by fans and many his profession, was gunned down in his hometown while with his daughter in public in broad daylight. Its a cold world.
