Honestly, I'd rather have Lakins out there than Wright.

Lakins is one candidate. Tapia has looked good so fart, too. But he would have to be added to the 40-man roster. I believe the Sox do have one spot remaining...

With Wright’s suspension,, the Sox apparently have two open spots on the 40 man roster.

I'm more concerned about the loss of CK. Wright and Kelly don't really factor in to me.

Wright has probably been doing P.E.D.s for a while . That's the kind of guy he is. Finally got caught and hid it from the club . Forget him . If you absolutely have to have a knuckleballer, bring back Wakefield. You can charge his salary to NESN .

Even if we signed Craig Kimbrel, it may not help if he continues to be ineffective. We need to replace the Craig Kimbrel of the first half of 2018 and prior years. I was hoping a trade would yield such a pitcher.

3.58 FIP second half. 2.95 FIP first half.

He was fine last season. He wasn't otherworldly, but was fine.

I don’t think the Sox are going to release Wright for this. This is the team that signed Jenrry Mejia after all...

It's the culmination of not telling them he failed the test plus the DV issues from last year.

I still don’t think he gets released. He is still here after all, and he was reportedly a key in the future bullpen plans...

its become a PR nightmare.....i think they cut his throat. dont be surprised if little tidbits get leaked to press that he punched the traveling secretary or feigned an injury or two over the past few seasons.....

Is Wright a bigger PR problem than Mejia?

Bear in mind, on a team that needs a closer, Mejia is the career saves leader. He might have been brought in with hopes of filling an important high profile role. And this is a guy who got suspended twice and still didn’t learn his lesson...

Mejia hasn't pitched in MLB since 2015. The average fan has no idea about his backstory.

Correction, he was suspended 3 times which resulted in a supposed "lifetime" ban...............

And they know Steven Wright’s?

Mejia’s backstory was summed up in every article when Boston signed him and was the rare player described using the words “lifetime suspension.”

Wright is just another athlete with PED issues. His domestic issue last year was barely covered outside of Boston...

Yes. And we know he didn’t learn his lesson after the first two, hence the third.

We don’t know yet if he learned his lesson after the third suspension....

Yes, most Sox fans are aware of the DV incident and the PED stuff that just happened.

Which begs the question - if the plan is to release him, why haven’t they? His appeal has already been denied. And they could free up his entire salary instead of just half of it...

What's the hurry on updating the 40 man? It's still only 3/7.

yes, i think wright is a bigger PR nightmare. he has been on the team for a few seasons and worn our jersey. he beat his wife while in our uniform and now he has taken PED's while in our uniform. time to take that uniform away from him forever.

Mejia did all his transgressions in another uniform. personally, i dont want any PED guys on my team so am fine with Mejia being gone too. but i do think they are very very much different PR issues for the Boston Red Sox organization

The “hurry” is the season starts in 21 days. If the plan is to release him, why wait? If he isn’t released in 21 days, his salary becomes guaranteed (despite his inability to cash in on half of it).

Now there are some things I don’t know (massive understatement). For example, can a team release a suspended player? And if they do, does his suspension wait until he’s on a new team? If so, the Sox might do him a favor and let him have a suspension before releasing him (and before paying him). Otherwise, if they release him, his career is over...

Uniform point taken, but we’re also talking about the only Major Leaguer to receive a lifetime ban under the new drug testing program. That has to carry considerable negative PR...

Yeah, they have 21 days to make a decision... That was my point. What's the rush?

Weird. Why would a guy who throws a knuckleball use PEDs? It must be his knee, trying to recover ASAP.

I wouldn't release Wright, he is an effective pitcher. It is just a matter of getting him healthy. Who knows, maybe an 80 game suspension will be a good thing for him if he returns with full health.

IMO, he's blown his chance with the Red Sox.

He needs to be gone.

Signing Mejia was not a good look.

I'm not sure that I've ever rooted for a player not to make the team, but I am rooting against Mejia.

If he does make the team, I'll sadly have to root for him, and that won't make me happy.

At least Cora acknowledged that Wright was not in the "right" condition to open the season on the active roster. Think what you will, but the 34 year old specialty pitch thrower with a really bad knee had limited chances to get a MLB contract while rehabbing, so he took a chance and lost . But did he really. He know has 3 more months to work out the knee and his knuckleball and right in place come mid summer to fill a potential hole and pick up a cool $650K+ for doing so. So who is the idiot ---him or us for caring WTF happens to him ? By late June, someone will be looking for his penintent return. Just don't count on Steven for any playoff action for the second year in a row. He's already ineligible.

Isn't there someone else more interesting to talk about. Oh yeah, Pedey played an inning today and is 1 for 1 this Spring.

Because delaying makes it look like it isn’t a PR nightmare.

“Steven Wright has embarrassed this organization again! He needs to go! Get him out of here now!!.... Or in two weeks, whenever it’s convenient.”

Posted
I entirely understand why Wright did what he did. What I don’t understand is why he didn’t tell the team in the offseason. I get he has a contract, but that can be voided. I think the Sox will likely release him at the end of his suspension assuming the pen has received reinforcements by then and he’ll have pissed off the one organization that kept giving him chances
