Phillies Reportedly Agree To Sign Bryce Harper

By Jeff Todd | February 28, 2019 at 1:52pm CDT

1:57pm: Harper’s deal sets a new record, as Bowden first suggested. It’s a $330MM value over thirteen years, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.com (Twitter links), with no opt-outs included.

No opt outs.

Good for the Phillies. The stories that he didn't want to play there were obviously wrong. It only took $330 million to make him love the place.

Machado's deal is actually a little better, with a higher AAV and an opt-out. Wasn't expecting that.

Edit: now they say there will be opt-outs in Harper's deal.

Phillies have added Reamulto, McCutcheon and Segura and now Harper. They have really injected some offense.

Not to mention Dave Robertson and Juan Nicasio to the bullpen...

A cringe-worthy contract for some. LOL!!

Ha. This contract is so far beyond cringe-worthy I don't think there's even a name for it.

Crazy azz Phillies.

Phillies will be regretting that deal within a few years

^^This.

Okay, maybe not within a 'few' years, but soon enough.

MLBTR predicted he would get 14 years and 420 million.

So this is actually pretty reasonable. :D

Unreal.

It makes you wonder what Mookie will get.

SMH This is a sad day in baseball, IMO.

This deal is not really any bigger than Machado's, though.

It's crazy money, of course. But the craziest thing is that the teams can actually pay contracts like these.

$25mil/year sounds reasonable until you realize it's for 13 years if there's no opt out. And guaranteed he will fall off a cliff sometime before the 2020 election winner's term is out.

I think Harper will be a productive hitter for 5 more years at least. But he will probably be a DH eventually. The Phillies and the other NL teams bidding on him must be confident that the NL will adopt the DH.

The really important thing it all got wrapped up in an expedient and timely fashion with several hours to go before it’s March....

Great point. I suppose they could move him to 1B if not.

Yep, it's been torture. The Machado-Harper show was like a 20-inning game. By the end you don't even care about the outcome, you just want it to be over.

Although truthfully I'm glad the Yanks didn't get either one. That might have been insufferable.

Harper is going to rake at CBP. it's a hitters ballpark and LH hitters just annihilate. he will hit 40+ the first few years of this contract. but 13 years is just insanity.

I'm glad he finally signed so we can stop hearing about him. Sucks for him that he has to spend the next 13 years of his life in the city of Philly though.

I'm not saying Philly is the best city in the world, but for 330 million dollars there aren't a lot of cities in America I wouldn't live, and they're all in New Jersey.

s***, I’d live in Jersey, Baltimore, whatever for $330 million.

The Phillies have a billion dollar plus TV deal on the horizon and so the Harper contract is relatively easy to pay for. I think Harper takes the Phillies to the next level and they are now the favorites in the NL East.

When the offseason began, I thought for sure the Yankees would sign either Machado or Harper, along with P.Corbin. They Yankees have had a terrible offseason. Hal Steinbrenner is definitely fiscally conservative. If George is around, either Machado or Harper are in pinstripes along with Corbin. Hal is better for baseball and fair competition, but George was better for the Yankees. As a Red Sox fan, I'm starting to like Hal. Hope he doesn't sell the team.

Thanks for once again displaying your ignorance regarding all things baseball.

Most of the Phillies players actually live in NJ

Doubt it. He's only hit 40HR once and been over 30 another time in his career. I really don't get the hype for him. Aside from his mvp season he's been nothing special.

He's a s***** defender and a terrible baserunner on top of that.

Well saying that the deal is not really any bigger than Machado's does nothing for me. Machado's contract is insane too.

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I am truly disheartened by these contracts. I thought GMs were wising up.

And now we will hear ad nauseam speculation about what kind of contract Mookie should get.
