Sonny Gray has been traded (finally) to the Reds

Yankees got in return 2B Prospect Shed Long and compensatory draft pick (38th overall)

Then they flip Long to the Mariners for OF Josh Stowers

BTW the Reds extended Gray 3 years for 30.5M

Details still coming....

I'd be disappointed to learn that Shed Long was anything less than a five-tool player.

He is less. 3 tools max...

Tool Shed, not bad.

He can be added to the Fun with Baseball Names list for building names along with Phil Roof, Matt Stairs, and Bobby Doerr...

Personally I'm kind of a stickler and my preference is to exclude nicknames. Shed's actual name is Shedric.

Stowers is a speed demon with a good hit tool, a great eye and projectable power who won’t need to be 40 man protected for a couple seasons. He stole 20 bases in 58 games in short season. Look for him to start in either Charleston or Tampa and move fast as a collegiate draftee. His bugaboo is defense. The write up I read on him was he makes up for bad jumps with his top notch speed, but at the highest levels he will need to get his jumps and angles polished. He also doesn’t have a strong arm and if relegated to a COF spot, he’d be relegated to LF. Funny thing is, this guy sounds like the RH version of Shed Long. I like the move. I think this kid rapidly ascends our system as we are weak in the position player department above the short season leagues and this kid is gonna debut probably in Tampa.

You’re sure it’s not Shedward?

Now here's a really bad pun:

The Yankees traded for him, but it wasn't Long before they Shed him.

You’re right.

That is a really bad pun...

The lack of a need for the 40 man roster spot was probably the biggest reason the Yankees acquired him.

He might have a great hit tool, but it didn’t show up much last year. However, his plate discipline was on display...

He was drafted last year, held his own against other college draftees and showed some power, speed and a great eye. I agree that the lack of a 40 man need was very important here. Also, he’s already an outfielder, something that Long will probably need to transition to. We shall see if Cash’s investment pays off. That being said, the #36 pick may be the best return of this trade

Wait! I can pile on!

Better to Shed him before to Long than be Stowers who just hid him away...

While it may have not shown up in his limited pro debut, he certainly has exhibited a hit tool over his collegiate career(not that that guarantees anything)

The 6-foot-1, right-handed-hitting Stowers played collegiately at Louisville, where he hit .407 in the NCAA tournament as a sophomore before boosting his draft stock in the wooden-bat Cape Cod League. As a junior for the Cardinals, he hit .336 with an OPS of 1.036 and 36 steals while earning D1Baseball and NCBWA All-America third-team honors. He was also named to the All-ACC Academic team in 2017 and 2018.

You might be able to do even better if you use his name pronunciation. It's pronounced "Stores"

What if Paxton wilts under the spotlight- the excuse now being used for Gray's poor performance with the Yanks?

Crow eating?
