And really going after the minutiae here. While it was a regular season game, that game in 1978 was constantly referred to as a “one game playoff.” And as it was a “winner take all,” it really served that purpose. Any sport that has a single game with high postseason stakes like that is often referred to as “effectively a playoff game.”

It’s not really up for being teased about in the same fashion as Jacko saying the Yankees playoff hopes were decided by a diving catch that happened in a completely different series... :)

Wasn't trolling at all.

Just merely pointing out the stupidity of the sox fans when they claim that the WC is a "play in" game and not a playoff game.

You know damn well that if the roles were reversed the past couple of seasons and it was the sox playing in the WC game you'd all be singing a different tune.

And WC games are "constantly referred to as playoff games" except by the fans in here..........

You're awfully sensitive about the Yanks being in all those Wild Card games.

If the Sox end up in a Wild Card game this year, we'll call it a play-in game, OK? Hopefully that clears this up.

Play in vs play off? Wow. Who cares? It’s a one game winner take all scenario no matter how you label it.

Tell you what - we’ll call it a “play-in” game when the Sox are in it but a “playoff” game when the Yankees are in one. That way you can maintain some hypocrisy about the whole scenario and have some minutiae to troll over.

Happy?

Hardly sensitive about it at all, just pointing out the facts.

The vast majority of the Sox fans here have never used the term 'play in' game. Now that's a fact.

I know expecting no injuries is a lot to ask for, but looking at our rotation, we can see it offers a a huge area to improve or at least to make up for some of the downside of a diminished bull pen in 2019.

In 2018, we got 34 starts from Pom, Johnson, Velazquez, Cuevas & Beeks plus 4 from Wright. It's possible we replace those starts with...

4-7 more from Sale

2-3 more from Price

12-20 more from Eovaldi

6-10 more from ERod

Unknown more from Wright

On offense, just getting these guys to 152 games would add this many games...

16 Betts

16 Bogey

4 Beni

2 JD

31 Devers

8 JBJ

Unknown from Pearce

(Vaz & Moreland also missed time in '18.)

We have some players that will likely not perform as well as they did in 2018. We have other players that should perform better than they did last year. For the most part, it should be a wash, assuming fairly good health.

Even if we are a little bit worse overall, which I'm not saying is the case, we are still the team to beat. We were that good last year.

No, no, no. The Wild Card game is, and always will be, a playoff game. :)

Yankees fans are having a difficult time dealing with the Red Sox being WS Champions. I like it. :)

I don't know if the projections have been updated recently or not, but a few weeks ago, the Red Sox led all of baseball in Steamer WAR projections for 2019. Not that it means a whole lot, but I stand by my opinion that the Sox are still the team to beat, regardless of whatever improvements the Yankees have made and whatever 'weakening' the Red Sox have incurred.

And despite what Jacko says.

Begrudgingly the Sox are the team to beat in 2019.. but so were the Astros in 2018. Things change!!

It's extremely hard to repeat, that's for sure.

It certainly looks like the Red Sox, Yankees and Astros are going to be the iron again.

The Astros were the team to beat in 2018. They were actually 6 games better than the Red Sox by Pythagorean W-L. And the playoffs are largely a crapshoot. No matter how good a team is, you can never discount the randomness that is such a large part of the game of baseball. As sk has said, the Sox could be a better team this year and yet win fewer games.

Vegas currently has the Red Sox as slight favorites. Not sure whether or not the wise guys factor WAR projections into their odds .

Wonder how the odds look after the Yanks get Machado and the Dodger get Harper.

Umm moonslob, why wouldn't I want to see this?

In fact, it actually backs up what I said, that eovaldi is not better than Happ.

Although it does predict that devers will come in higher than Andujar and Torres. I'll stick with my guys.

1. The Red Sox should never make a move to counter a move that the Yankees have made.

2. What the heck is he even talking about that a 6 year deal for Kimbrel suddenly doesn't seem so outrageous? Of course it's outrageous.

3. Do the Yankees have baseball's best bullpen? I don't know.

4. The Yankees had baseball's best bullpen last year, one that was capable of shortening a game to 3 innings. Where did that get them?

5. The Red Sox are still the team to beat. Plain and simple.

this post should have ended this stupid thread.

4. It got us one Benintendi diving catch away from taking you to a game 5 with a battered Chris Sale in Fenway. The Yanks were the only team to actually put up a fight against Boston.

hahahaha. what?

do you even know which team you root for?

or are you delusional thinking the yankees were in the ALCS this year?

too funny.
