It is a concern, but he had been out a long time, and sometimes it takes a few starts to regain velocity and control.

Certainly, there is concern, but 2 games should not be used to claim he has forever lost his velocity- not that you are saying that.

I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying that tight shoulders that then recover with much less velocity usually aren’t “nothin”. I bet he knows he’s got something there and thinks he can pitch through it or he doesn’t want to know what’s there and is willing to roll the dice

Yes, I know you didn't say it was forever.

2019 is Sale's big contract year. He may try to hide any pain.

I'm confident he'll be okay, but I understand homerism might be at play with my opinion.

Pitchers who try to throw through discomfort or tightness in their shoulder, usually see their walk rate spike.

We should know by the end of April, if he has the early warning signs.

First of all, its not the same thing: Sale has no evidence of structural damage; Pineda did. Second, one would think that the study was done properly, given the stakes, and that contrast was used. And finally, Sale wasn't throwing 90 at the end of the year-he was hitting 95.

But by all means keep trying to dredge up worry here. Just be prepared for me to correct you if you mis-state things.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

It's invasive and one wonders whether Sale wanted it done. The player has to consent

As FredLynn pointed out, I would think that Sale would want it done given the stakes. Peace of mind.

But not being a doctor, I will let the two of you hash it out.

Sure, if you don't like having Brock Holt on the roster.

What does Brock Holt have to do with anything?

If Moncada were still on the roster, other moves would have been different to make room for him. Either Swihart is gone or Nunez is never re-signed.

When someone strikes out 218 Times in a season, I expect 40-50 HRS, not 18. Good Luck. Eventually you will be out of a job when you strike out once for every 2 at bats with RISP and don't hit HRS at least. The old launch angle crap. Still think that Dubon will be one that will hurt more then the Moncada Trade. Especially with Bogaerts a Free Agent after next season.

That Salem team was something though, Moncada, Dubon, and Bennintendi, leading off.

Pineda's first MRI with us was negative. His second one with contrast showed the tear. A standard MRI without intra-articular contrast is not going to show a labrum tear reliably unless it is ripped off the bone. Now, most pitchers have baseline abnormal MRI's even without symptoms. So who knows, maybe they know there is some fraying of the cuff in the shoulder and that is consistent with his baseline MRI. Or maybe Sale agreed to a non-con MRI but not an MR Arthrogram. The arthrogram requires a needle inserted into the joint and contrast infused in. It is not benign and it is painful. I can see if Sale said "I'm good" when offered this option

All that is possible, but I think that if there was a significant suspicion that something was really wrong structurally it would border on malpractice not to at least recommend an arthrogram to him-and he would be a fool not to do it. Its really not that painful, having had it done myself. The most painful part is the injection of the lidocaine into the joint space. I have had it done before, so I know-my shoulder is toast. I just cannot imagine a scenario where Sale was told that there is a suspicion that he has something seriously wrong with his shoulder that could affect his career and he declines the proper study to delineate and define the problem, if there is one.

How do we know one wasn’t recommended?

We don't, of course. I have written many times here that as fans we are not entitled to know the truth about the condition of the players, and I think that holds true for all teams (and for that matter, all people). That said, logic would dictate that given the financial implications for the player involved one could assume that it is likely that a full workup was done. We will probably never find out.
