I don't disagree either. IMO, the Players Association is equally at fault.

How? The players are the ones being locked out.

They are as unwilling to compromise as the owners are.

How so? What is the compromise that the players need to give? The players haven't been able to even negotiate since they were locked out very early on.

I'm sorry Kimmi, but I don't think you've been following this closely enough.

The stalled CBA negotiations are on both sides. The lockout is squarely on the shoulders of the owners…

Before the lockout, both sides made some concessions. Neither side has compromised enough. This pretty much pertains to all of the economic issues. It's kind of like when the Sox offered Mookie $300M and he countered with $420M. That's not a negotiation.

And they're not going to do anything until the season is in jeopardy. We've seen this movie before.

Unfortunately, that is likely to be the case. Pride and ego are affecting both sides willingness to give in.

FTR, I feel that the owners have been less willing to compromise than the players, but I also feel that the owners have the right or are in the better position to be less willing to compromise. They are the owners, after all. Not good for baseball fans, but as I'm reminded repeatedly, baseball is a business.

Well, back in 1994 they made a different version of the movie…

MLB announces experimental rule changes will be tested in the minors during the 2022 season:

Pitch timer, all full-season affiliates.

Larger bases, all full-season affiliates.

Defensive positioning limits (four players on the infield, two on each side of second) in AA/A

Automatic balls and strikes in Triple-A (Triple-A West from May 17th on, Triple A East at all games in Charlotte) and Low A (a challenge system in which pitcher, catcher, batter can appeal ump's ball or strike call to ABS. Three appeals each, keep the appeal if you're right.)

What is the reason for bigger bases? For the sight- impaired runners?

They’ve been using the same size bases since the days of the Honus Wagner action-figure sized players…

Is it a change for change sake?

There are supposedly two reasons for the larger bases.

1. To help reduce injuries when players slide.

2. To increase the number of steals, thereby adding more "action" to the game.

FTR, I am against using larger bases.

I do like the limits on the shifts, however, more for aesthetic reasons than anything else.

Major breakthrough for baseball fans. Starting next week MLB umpires will now use a microphone to announce replay review decisions to the crowd. NFL style. This is a welcome change and will help fans better understand the outcomes.

I guess out vs safe was too confusing?

Yikes. Next thing you know "umpire" will be changed to "referee" to be consistent with other sports.

They are getting specialized training in AZ to learn how to use a microphone. Money well spent.

I am not a fan of replay to begin with. That said, there are times, although rare, when the umpires make a decision that just doesn't make any sense, not just to casual fans, but even to announcers like Eck and Remy. I'm guessing we'll often hear that there wasn't enough conclusive evidence to overturn a call, but I welcome hearing the rationale behind the umpires' rulings.

Just realized the new rules have made sign-stealing much more difficult.

I think we are going to see offenses in general really struggle this year.

“The rule states that the runner sliding into second base has to maintain possession of the base," crew chief Bill Miller said in the Pool Report. "This runner did not maintain possession of the base. And he not only did not maintain possession, he came off the base and made contact with the fielder above the knee. That constitutes a violation on two terms."

Miller added, “I’ve never had a game end like this. And it’s the first time I’ve been announcing over the PA system. So, it’s all new to us. It’s an unfortunate way to lose, but those are the rules.”

Over the PA, the ump said "there was a slide rule violation, the runner at 2nd base is out, the runner at 1st base is out." It would have been nicer if he had stated the possession of the bag and contact above the knee over the PA.

I agree. That's the kind of thing that I thought the umpires were supposed to explain. I really haven't heard the umpires say much about the replay calls other than "the call stands" or "the ruling on the field is overturned." It kind of defeats the whole idea of announcing over the PA system if that's all they're going to say.

Despite the intolerable number of HRs, attendance had declined four straight years before COVID, and MLB still has no clue how to market its best players or engage kids. Also, is anyone - parents, MLB - connecting kids to the game's past? Both to the legendary players and to the disgrace of the color barrier? Or do kids only care about the here and now?

@HowieLongShort

70% of MLB clubs (21/30) have experienced an attendance decline this season and attendance at a league level is down 6%.

Former Mets/Pirates exec Lou DePaoli says a 6% decline “equates to roughly 8 million less people going to games. That is concerning.”

Expect more ticket increases to make up the shortfall.
