10/17 ALCS game 4

Lesson #1 Alex....you can relegate starters to the pen. But you can't relegate the starters you are going to start in the series to the pen. Its gonna' get ya' sooner or later. You may be able to pull it off in a 5 game series, but not 7.

 

A longer term problem is what to do with Sale. Cora did everything he possibly could to get Sale to the post season in shape to pitch and he STILL was not in shape to pitch in October.

 

This is nothing to do with porcello pitching out of the pen. He just stinks like he did half the season. He's 50/50. You can never count on him

The amazing thing is that virtually everyone on this board, which can get a little volatile, saw that Porcello was up in the zone, prone to flyballs, had no real break on his curve, etc. Sometimes the obvious is too simple. Cora trying to save his pen because he's going naked tomorrow with Erod. You can only win the game you are playing, not tomorrows, especially in the playoffs

 

He's definitely saving Workman and Hembree until November.

Yeah, there's something messy about using series starters in relief positions--except, of course, in an exit game.

I believe the SOX can get two innings from Kelly. That leaves Brasier, Barnes and Kimbrel.

I think you go all out to win this game. Verlander is pitching tomorrow anyway. By stretching out Porcello, Cora gave up the lead and now there is a good chance the Red Sox lose tonight and lose tomorrow against Verlander. Bad management by Cora. You can't bring Porcello back out in the 4th inning. He was done.

I don't think Schilling ever gets the props he deserved as a member of the Red Sox. Maybe because of his mouth. Maybe because of his political views. Maybe because of his failed business venture on the back of tax paying residents. One thing is for sure though. The guy was a bulldog and a playoff performer. I'd like to find one of those to pitch between Chris Sale and Eovaldi on the back end. I don't know who that guy is but i'd like for us to find one.

That was a huge gamble. It was always a huge gamble brought on by the lack of a pen Cora had any confidence in. He could not even piece together an 8th inning for that game and he could not bring in Kimbrel. At least we did win that game. But to simply write that off as not having consequences later in the same series is simply putting our heads in the sand. Having no options for that 8th inning just can't be ignored. Paying for it tonight.

 

Now with the Sale situation, Cora is being held by the nose and kicked in the ass as if that situation was not always brewing in the background.

AJ Hinch has out-managed Cora in this one. Hinch took out his failed starter. Cora didn't and thus gave up the lead.
