In the playoffs when Wright is brought into the game, then VAZ should be brought in to catch him if VAZ is not starting.

Good point.

Happy with the W but they’re really babying sale with the innings. If this guy gets lit up in the first game the divisional series i am blaming cora. I don’t see the astros doing this.

Can we please stop bashing Cora?

He's a big reason we are where we are-- home field throughout and able to rest anyone we want.

They are handling Sale the best way possible. He'll be ready to pitch 90-110 pitches by game 1.

Of course, this would be an option only if SWI makes the playoff roster.

It can be dangerous to sub for your starting catcher without a back-up, but it does happen, especially when it's the playoffs and a key PH moment comes up.

I've been arguing for 3 catchers for weeks. It seems like more and more people are agreeing or considering it more and more.

Certainly, Vazquez has the knack. But Sandy Leon is OK at it. If the Sox are behind when Wright goes in, maybe Cora wants to leave him in so he can pinch hit for him if he is due to bat soon.

Another remarkable win in part attributable to Cora's managing. He brought in Pom after Sale to no avail--specifically, 2 runs--but the others did OK. Even Kelly got 3 outs and Wright got the save. On top of which, first Holt's dinger and then the most improbable hit of all came from Lin, who was in for Betts and doubled off the monster, moved to 3b, and then scored on a big sac fly from Beni.

No JDM, no Bogey, no Mookie--no problem. Next we will see cats living with dogs.

My goodness gracious.

Holt's Sac Fly to move Lin to 3rd was big. 2 Productive Outs, that was the difference. Hits are not the only way to win a Game. Smart, Team Baseball wins games too. Outs are important.

3 Catchers are needed because they are weak Offensively, you might have to Pinch hit for them at crucial part of game. If Carlton Fisk was Catching would you pinch hit for him? Hell no.

Sandy looks beat having caught the dog days of summer.Early July to Sept. I would rest him the rest of season. Might help him Offensively a little.

Going into the season just about everyone agreed Cora needed a way to cut back Sale's innings.

Now you're complaining about him being babied.

Pretty good illustration of how managers can't win.

I am not even going to go with 3 Catcher thing anymore, its Leon, and Vazquez. I doubt Swihart starts any Play-off games. He'll be used as needed in different Positions. And Catcher if game situation dictates it. So that will end that. He's only been in 18 games this year as a Catcher. 41 games in various positions including DH. So he's more of a swing guy like Zobrist than actually only a Catcher.

Exactly. I don't get all the high criticism of Cora. The guy has done a great job this year.

I love how we handled Sale. It helped to have clinched on August 5th, but still...

I would crack up if this is a big farce about Sale's Shoulder, to get him rest, and have other teams thinking. It's something Bill Belichick would do. It would be genius. He's basically on a Spring Training regime right now. Real smart, going into Play-offs. Edited by OH FOY!

All pitchers feel shoulder pain during a season. I wouldn't be surprised, if the pain Sale felt was no worse than other seasons, in which he led the league in IP or was over 190 or 200.

I was even arguing last year, in the thick of a tight race, we should rest Sale more than we did.

It's no fluke his August and Sept numbers are down every single season he has ever pitched, except this year.

Here's an eye-opener:

Since his start on June 24th, Sale has started 9 games.

We are 9-0 in those starts. He is 6-0.

48 IP (5.1 IP per start)

24 Hits

6 BBs

82 Ks

A sick 0.19 ERA

A sick .388 OPS against.

The sickest part of it all? People complaining about how he's being primed for the playoffs.

I've thought since day 1 that they were really just limiting his innings. He's looked pretty good lately. He'll be ready to go for when the games really count.

Agreed, and he can't do much better than he has in his last 9 starts.

One freakin' earned run in 48 IP!

6 BBs and 82 Ks.

.194 OBP against

.194 SLG against

Well, they didn't baby Sale with the innings last year, and he fizzled in September and October. The old way didn't work, so this is worth a shot.

Last year: it’s the manager’s fault that Sale pitched so many innings and was tired

This year: it’s the manager’s fault that they rested Sale down the stretch to save his arm

I disagree:

Ya I agree with this. Sale has had a lot of rest and looked pretty good. Still some baseball left and still time to get in more time for him. If he blows it again in the playoffs (in my opinion) there is nobody to blame other than Sale himself.

Well, we can't blame it on being tired.

I try not to read too much into tiny sample sizes.

Wakefield used to close, so did Hoyt Wilhelm. I think Cora is onto something. We Win. Magic # 3

I don't remember Wake too often walking guys around to second base before the ball stopped headed to the backstop and there is nobody like Hoyt. Also check Hoyt and Wake for post season saves. Hoyt had 1 in 1954, three years into his career and Wake had none. Isn't that what we are really talking about here....Wright late in games in the post season? Still sounds like insanity and a very last resort to me.

I'm worried about PBs, but not Wright's ability to baffle hitters and get late inning outs.

I'm also not worried about bringing him in with men on.

He's the best we have after Kimbrel and maybe Brasier.

His walks immediately upon entering a game should be a major concern especially in the post season. What he does in the regular season really does not matter that much to me. I would still content that if we see Wright late in games in the post season it would still just be an indicator of our weak pen.

I don't think Farrell ruined Sale's arm and haven't seen that posited anywhere. He tires out at the end of the year due to his frame. I don't think Farrell broke him or had any impact on his current year.

He gets the job done. Will I be biting my nails, when he walks 2 to start an inning? Of course, but look around, other pen guys are walking one and giving up a homer.

BTW, Kimbrel has looked scarier than Wright over the last month or tow.
