I like Eovaldi’s Whip & K’s. Can’t look at his W/L record. His ERA is pedestrian.. We give him some run support he should suffice as our 4th SP. I may have like Fiers slightly more, but ahh... Six of one, half-dozen of the other. At least we addressed it.

Ugh, I absolutely hate this trade. First move by DD that I've hated. Not that I hate Eovaldi, he's alright, but 6(?) years of Beeks is waaaaay too much to give up for 2+ months of someone that's not needed all that much. I'm not given up on Beeks after 6 innings. Be prepared to see him do very well in Tampa for many years. Wright or ERod should be healthy by the playoffs, and even if not, I'm not sure Eovaldi is even an improvement over Johnson/Velazquez. The cliff was just a hazy mirage, now it's full speed ahead to the cliff. Exactly the kind of deadline deal that I was hoping didn't happen.

Or I could have just repeated this

Beeks COULD be quite good for Tampa ... but his style of pitching is much more of a fit in Tampa than Boston.

Agree.

Seriously after Surgery, and only 10 starts, I honestly don't know what he'll do for us.

That's all part of the fun, isn't it?

Yeah, I wouldn't be so confident if he went somewhere else, but Tampa has some kind of magic potion for SPs

In Tampa a 2.12 ERA, on the road 5.18 era. Actually just not enough starts to really know. Like in Fenway 4 starts with a 5.60 era, 17 innings and 24 hits that only sticks out.

Maybe we can turn that around. All i know is that Tampa bay has develop a lot of pitchers. They probably think they can fix beeks.

I don't want Pomeranz there either, Walks, and HRS, are the worst recipe for a Reliever. Back to Pawtucket with Rusney. By the way who's hitting .320 down there.

If we are not worried about going over the seconde tier, why not bring Castillo up instead of looking at Austin Jackson. He would be our 4th outfielder and might be used in following years.

I'm not down on this trade at all. Eovaldi may be the kind of guy we need to fill a gap right now.

However, I have to say that I'd like this deal a lot better if Eovaldi were signed through another year. As it is we traded Beeks for a rental, and a rental that may cost a lot more to sign in the future if he works out for us.

Eovaldi was on a $2 mil deal, so the sox took on less than $1 mil with the move. When you consider Beeks was due probably $250K in terms of salary, the deal only adds $650K to the number. They are probably peeking over the limit without actually stepping over it

A pretty solid move for Dealin' Dave with what he had to offer. This could go either way but I'm guessing there is more of a chance Eovaldi turns in a solid three month run motivated by his ability to showcase his stuff for free agency on a much bigger stage.

What Tampa can afford Beeks that the sox couldn't is time. The Rays are clearing payroll and stockpiling talent. Beeks is a type of pitcher who struggles initially in the major leagues. Rookies don't get the edges and he will need to live out there to not be killed which is why lower velocity location types almost always struggle mightily at the outset of their careers. Leaving Boston will also benefit Beeks as he wont have to deal with righties pulling him over or into the monster out there. He is going to a place that knows how to develop pitching and knows how to market their pitching to become the best they could be.

I was right Eovaldi was suppose to start against the Yanks today. I would have waited, to see how he does. He wins he actually helps us out. And you can see him 1 more start.

IMO the answer to your question is "money". I know you couched the idea in not being worried about going over the 2nd tier but a significant amount of $$ can be saved by putting off Castillo's promotion until 2019, plus the one thing we don't need at the moment is another outfielder - unless the FO doesn't have faith in JDM's abilities out there.

And in fairness I hadn't heard about the interest in Austin Jackson.

i like who we got...but not thrilled with who we gave up to get him. but that is what we get with DD. burn the farm down.

if this translates to a parade it is all worth it. coming to a first place team hopefully he gets integrated quick.

Well the rays are making luis cessa look like cy young.

Cessa reminds me a lot of Nathan Eovaldi. Dominant, lights out stuff. Inconsistent execution. Cessa could be good for us going forward

They acquired Eovaldi without giving up Houck, Shawaryn, or Groome, the Red Sox top 3 pitching prospects. Don't get me wrong, I like Beeks, but he doesn't have the upside of Groome and Houck. Shawaryn, who is a year younger than Beeks, has slightly better projection IMO.

Beeks is a nice pitcher, but they could afford to move him with Houck and Shawaryn ready to enter the rotation mix by 2020.

I wish we had gone after wheeler but idk if the Mets put him on the table.

I also wonder if the Red Sox talked to the Mets about Wheeler. My proposed trade was Beeks and Dalbec for Wheeler but maybe the Mets are expecting a greater return. Wheeler does has one more year of control.

Eovaldi is definitely a guy the Red Sox should consider resigning in the offseason.

Get a starting 2b and Dombrowski's work is done.

Or you can trade for him now and get him to start for you an additional start. Which makes more sense.

I think so too.

Starting a game against the Yankees is essentially the same as starting a game for us (not against the Yankees). Either of those starts is a .5 game in the standings vs Yankees which is all that matters at this point. So I agree with OH FOY, would've made more sense to wait.

You guys are overthinking it. If Eovaldi pitched today we couldn't use him until July 30. We need him before that I think.
