Opening day, do you even remember or care to?

Since that day, Kelly has allowed 1 run. Good for a 0.35 ERA since. 1.73ERA overall on the season.

What change? better control of his offspeed offering and his fastball is getting hit less. He has allowed no hits in his last 9 appearances. More importantly, no homerun on the season. Kimbrel meanwhile has allowed 5 bombs and a wrench against Sale.

He is going to be paid if he keep this up. I hope he does and the Sox are the one to get his services.

If he keeps this up I hope they think about making him a starter again.

Maybe some other team might. But he is so much better as a reliever. his 2017 season was good as well.

I'm just joking. That dude will never start again.

Kind of night and day how effective he is at both positions.

If the price reaches 75M+ let Kimbrel walk.

Let's hope Smith and Thornburg can stay healthy.

I have posted this before but here it is again since we now have a Kelly thread.

Kelly is a f***ing wild man. If you have any interest in him at all this is interesting.

"On Episode 167 of the Section 10 Podcast, we’ve got a very special guest. It’s been three years in the making, but the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the show, Mr. Joe Kelly AKA Jim Buchanan.

We start the interview off with Kelly explaining why he changed his mind about coming on Section 10 since he originally said he wouldn’t do it unless the Red Sox won the World Series, the day he got traded to the Red Sox, a behind the curtain look at his strikeout in the 8th inning against Jurickson Profar with the bases loaded in Texas, what he remembers from facing the Red Sox in the 2013 World Series, the story behind the National Anthem standoff before Game 6 of the 2013 NLCS, what percentage of what he says to the media is ********, behind the scenes of Jim Buchanan, whether or not he’d ever be Wally for a day, watching the Red Sox from the bleachers while he was suspended, his charitable causes, the Tyler Austin-Yankees brawl, how he went to his own suspension hearing, if he expects retaliation in this Red Sox-Yankees series, how he’ll react to getting booed at Yankee Stadium, if and when he starts to check the standings, what the vibe is like with this team compared to the previous Red Sox teams he’s been on, worst shower body on the team, whether he would ever get into podcasting as an active player, whether or not he’d ever fight at Rough N Rowdy, a staring contest with Coley, and what Red Sox fans should know about this team."

and it ended up being koji-san. who woulda thunk it?
And we were just lucky that the 3 options before him crashed and burned or got injured. Kimbrel is a sure thing. Luck is random.

Yeah, it took Ben 4 boxes of Crackerjack to find that lucky charm.

This could be an option at closer.

I remember the time that Jose Canseco talked Kevin Kennedy into pitching and he blew out his elbow and need TJ surgery.

Since my plan for the Red Sox involves B.Harper in RF next year, with Mookie moving to CF, and trade J.Bradley, I need to save money and so I'm not resigning Kimbrell who will want 75-100 million. Joe Kelly gets the first shot at the closer role.

Bryce Harper. I like the way you think. You just made Kimmi shudder. We need to get a GIF for the Kimmi Shudder.

LOL

LF: Benintendi

CF: Betts

RF: Harper

That would be some outfield. Maybe the Red Sox greatest OF of all time. With Martinez in the DH spot.

I'm also saving money on Bogaerts, not signing him long term; I'm letting him leave via free agent after the 2019 season. He will be replaced by dark horse prospect CJ Chatman.

Combined long term contracts for Kimbrell and Bogaerts will total something near 200 million I presume. I would rather invest that money in Harper.

That's too funny right there. And that it was Canseco was the cherry on top.

Under your plan, assuming Price stays, who else is in our starting rotation in 2021?

E-Rod is still here. At the bottom (or perhaps middle) of the rotation, you have potential fits with guys like B.Johnson, J.Beeks, and M.Shawaryn. But where does the Red Sox next ace come from? Do they resign Sale who will want a fortune? I don't know. For me, that is the most challenging question when it comes to the 2021 team.

Surprised to read the love for Bryce Harper here though realizing some of it is tongue in cheek. I live near DC, the opinion on this guy here is so over the top. Guy on the radio called him "the face of baseball". LOL, guy has had only 2 great seasons and has hit 30+ HRs exactly once.

As for Kelly it really is amazing the turnaround. I remember the comments after the opener, and I agreed with them. Since they he has been amazing and I'm no longer worried about our set up man.

In 3 of his last 4 seasons (including this year), Harper has an OPS+ of 147 or higher. Tough to be better than that. He is still only 25 years old--he could be signed to a 10 year contract without worrying about it.

(As the Joe Kelly thread morphs into the Bryce Harper thread)

Harper is really good but I would pass on him at the price he's going to command.

I would much rather see Mookie get locked up long term. Then there's Sale, Benintendi and so on and so forth.

Great timing on the Joe Kelly tribute thread huh, right before he gets rocked. LOL.

As for Harper he is very very good, but the face of baseball? Not even. The headline in today's paper is "Is Harper's defense costing the Nats?" So there's that. If I'm putting up a huge offer, and those contracts seldom work out, I'm paying the guy up 95 30 miles and playing SS for the Birds.

What I remember about that day was that Clemens grabbed a bat and was futilely demanding to pinch hit against him. That would have been a great match-up.

I see the Yanks and Dodgers going hard after Harper. Harper to the Yanks will be their final piece for this team. Yanks don't need Machado, Andujar, is going to be almost as good. And worse thing is the Yanks got the bucks now. We wont have it, to compete.
