Agreed, but I'd hate to trade him for what we will likely get (close to nothing).

Once Pedey returns, we'll have to make a choice, even if the choice is just a temporary one that delays the dealing of Swihart.

It will be interesting to see what the Sox decide, though it does seem like Nunez to the DL is a probably option.

I don't understand why the Sox won't give Swihart some more playing time. It doesn't have to be behind the plate. Let him start a few games in LF. Let him start a few games at 2nd. I don't think his defense could be much worse than Nunez'.

Cora has found a way to get everyone else in the lineup fairly regularly, so it doesn't make much sense that he can't find a way to get Swihart in the lineup more often.

So then it begs the question, if he's not good enough to play under a bench happy manager like Cora, then just rip the band aid off and deal him when Pedey returns.

If Nunez needs a DL stint, then call up Lin.

The only regret would be an injury to a catcher shortly after trading Swihart. The again, it's not like finding another Sandy Leon will be difficult or costly.

I really hate to lose Swihart, but if that's what the plan is, then they really need to cut him loose. Not only is it hurting Swihart, but it's hurting the flexibility of the Sox.
I can't see a spot opening for him on the MLB roster that will give him the playing time that he will need to prove himself and develop -- not even into next season.

The only way is if they decide to try and save a few $ cap wise by moving on from Leon. Sandy makes about $2M (which will probably go up in arbitration) while Swihart is down around the minimum. If so, then Swihart is basically a Rule V player this year. He certainly is being treated like one.

It doesn't seem that the organization trusts Swihart with a catcher's mitt. He'd have to play winter ball to improve.

Swihart at his best is not an above average OFer. Swihart at his best with improved catching skills can be an above average C. In order to be an above average OFer, you need to be a damn good hitter. In order to be an above average catcher, you need to not suck at hitting, that's about it

It's likely harder for Swihart to improve his catcher defense enough to be acceptable than to hit .750 and become a decent utility player.

Once Pedey returns, we'll have to make a choice, even if the choice is just a temporary one that delays the dealing of Swihart.

Evan Drelich of NBC Sports Boston reports:

People familiar with some trade discussions described the Red Sox’ asking price as unreasonable for a player who isn’t playing and may be an odd man out when Dustin Pedroia returns in the near future.

“Hard to find a trade partner when you’re asking for some of teams' best prospects,” said a talent evaluator with one team that has talked to the Sox about Swihart.

Moon ..I don't agree at all .I know this shocks you .someone help me out in spring training didn't Swi have the yips ? I remember him overthrowing Porcello twice early in spring ... Do you think this is why there's lack of Catcher play ? I've been impressed every time I've seen the guy catch this year ....exhausted with the topic ...maybe there is someone's wife that's In love with Blake ? I can't understand this anymore .I want a high ranking prospect at minimum ...if it's at the club level I want a low era Reliever with nasty stuff .

Harmony beat me to it ...Redsox understand what this guy will become once given playing time ....begs to ask then ? What in the hell are they doing ??? Play the guy now !!!!

Ummm, we're in a pennant race, and we can't have a player learn on the job like Swihart needs to do in the minors.

He's not good enough to play. That's basically it.

He's out of options, so he can't get the game practice in needed to develop, assuming he can and will.

How can you be "impressed" every time he's caught this year, when he's only caught 1 inning and had "the yips" in ST'ing games?

C'mon moon, he's up to 2 innings now and he's the only catcher on the staff without a passed ball. He's obviously better than everyone else. Didn't you hear, he's the next Fisk.

To be fair, the yips were apparently in 2017 ST (I did a quick search for that) and he seemingly has gotten past those now.

Blake Swihart won't land a high-ranking prospect. Swihart's trade value may have dropped below that of Jarrod Saltalamacchia in July 2010 when the Red Sox traded for the switch-hitting catcher. As I've written before:

Blake Swihart is a year older now than Jarrod Saltalmacchia was in June 2010 when the Texas Rangers traded the switch-hitting catcher to the Red Sox for Chris McGuiness, Roman Mendez, Michael Thomas and cash. SoxProspects has never ranked the three prospects among the Top 20 in the organization. McGuiness and Thomas apparently are out of organized baseball while Mendez is a 27-year-old toiling at Double A.

Saltalamacchia peaked at No. 18 on Baseball America's Top 100 prospect list while Swihart peaked at No. 17.

At the time of the 2010 trade Saltalamacchia was back down at Triple A, much as Swihart had spent much of his age 25 season at Triple A after being a starter at the MLB level.

With Saltalamacchia as his optimistic ceiling, Swihart has limited trade value.

The Red Sox have put a high price tag on Blake Swihart in trade negotiations with other teams, NBCSports.com’s Evan Drellich reports. “Hard to find a trade partner when you’re asking for some of teams’ best prospects,” one rival talent evaluator tells Drellich. Swihart has barely played at all this season coming off the Sox bench, and his previous two seasons also saw little MLB action (though injuries were a big factor in the lack of activity). While these factors have seemingly dimmed Swihart’s former top-prospect status, the Sox are still aiming for a big return for Swihart, with Drellich noting that some familiar with the trade talks have described Boston’s demands as “unreasonable.” The Sox may end up designating Swihart for assignment when Dustin Pedroia returns to ensure that a Swihart deal will happen, though this may or may not create the “bidding war” the Red Sox hope will then occur. MLBTR’s Steve Adams recently broke down the potential market for Swihart, and while there are several teams that could use catching help, it hardly seems like Boston will score multiple quality minor leaguers in exchange for Swihart.

MVP just for shits and giggles ....if my guy Blake is valued this high and top prospects are the price ??? Why the absolute f*** wouldn't we trade fat Sandy for a legit reliever???? Huh ??? That's f***ing dumb .

It's sounding more and more like Swihart is going to be traded or DFA'd, which to me, is kind of sad.

Yes, they did.

Couldn't disagree more.

Swihart had years and years to prove he could catch well enough to get a shot.

Yes, they called him up earlier than they planned, but he got his shot.

They even gave him a chance to earn a shot at another position.

The injury sustained in the OF was unfortunate, but I don't blame management. They tried to trade for Beltran and the deal fell through at the last moment. They gave Swihart, perhaps the second chance he hadn't even earned.

Swihart has only himelf to blame, if we are forced to play the blame game at all.
