Pirates Acquire Bryce Brentz

February 20th, 2018 at 12:47pm CST

By Jeff Todd

The Pirates have acquired outfielder Bryce Brentz from the Red Sox, according to an announcement from the Boston organization. Cash considerations will make up the return.

Brentz, 29, is a former first-round pick who has seen only minimal MLB action in his professional career. He seemed unlikely to hold down a roster spot through camp with the Red Sox working to finalize a deal with free agent J.D. Martinez. In all likelihood, Brentz’s 40-man spot will go to Martinez.

Maybe Brentz will finally get a major league shot.

Here's to Bryce Brentz!!! I really wish him well. I really think that with the signing of JD it became inevitable. I hope that he does get the opportunity that obviously he was not going to get in Boston. I also hope that this young man (yes notin he still is young) just rakes it over there in the nl if for no other reason than to just piss off the haters(i'm looking at you).

Brentz was a Sox draft pick and prospect.

He suffered a self inflicted injury that caused his development to be set back.

I hope all ex-Sox prospects do well.

I don't hate Him. I just don't think he's much of a baseball player. And for a baseball player he isn't young anymore.

You do realize he isn't going to start for Pittsburgh and might not even make the team out of spring training, which would make him a free agent. Looking at outfielders, Pitt was one of the worst potential landing spots for him along small market teams.

Chicago (AL), Detroit or Miami might have been a better all for him. ...

and on and on and on you go. beat beat beat goes the tired old drum. Once again as I mentioned earlier - I hope that he gets an opportunity. What part of that statement would lead you to think that I did not realize that he still has to earn his stripes? I would love to see him be successful primarily because he came up through our organization. Not that it matters but I might feel that you were something other than a huge wind bag if you could show a little loyalty to a young man who paid his dues in our organization.

I'd have preferred to see one of our numerous middle infielders go (maybe Holt, who seems redundant with Nunez, Hernandez, Marrero, Lin, and so on), but it'd be nice to see Brentz finally get a shot somewhere. Best of luck to him.

I feel the same and would hope that any loyal Red Sox fan would feel that way also.

Please stop. Just so this idiocy.

The entire point was that if Sox signed both Nunez and Martinez, they would Need to unload two players from the 40-man roster. They signed both and two players went. I don't consider it great insight on my part to recognize that a 29yo career minor leaguer is a DFA candidate. I'm not sure you insisted his power numbers shouldn't make him one and that his age, history and lack of options was important. But clearly they were factors. Not my fault. I didn't designate him.

Cheer for Brentz all you want. ( No love for Ben Taylor?) But if you really wanted him to get a shot, you didn't want him in Pittsburgh. You wanted him on the White Sox, Tigers, or Marlins...

Oh come on notin, just because I didn't mention Ben Taylor doesn't mean that I won't be pulling for him. I did not realize that the Sox simply released Brentz. I thought they traded him to the Pirates for cash. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I absolutely will stop the idiocy if that is what you consider it as soon as you stop trying to educate me with respect to things that I actually know something about.

Amen. I always want home grown talent to succeed. I can see no value in continually deriding a player. Especially one that is on the fringe and one you likely have never seen play.

I'm with you on this.

I had to go back to page 348 to see the reaction to the Martinez signing. On this page I saw the mention of Brentz and was totally confused, which only underscores how little I keep up with the Sox during the offseason. Not to take sides, but notin clarified it all by saying the Sox, having signed Nunez and Martinez, had to get rid of two from the 40 man roster, something I rarely think about.

So now would someone tell me what is the mostly likely lineup come April? To me we seem to be knee deep in catchers and infielders and DH's but not so deep in outfielders, which must delight Brock Holt no end.

It had to be Brentz. He's out of options. He'd never play unless 2 OF'ers got hurt.

OF depth chart:

starters: Beni, JBJ & Betts

4th OF'er: JDM (HRam or Nunez DHs-- not Brentz)

5th OF'er: Nunez (We'll be scrambling to get him PAs once Pedey comes back.)

Even Moreland or Swihart might start in LF over Brentz.

I can see why Marrero could be DFA'd since we are loaded with IF depth, but with Pedey out, Marco talking about needing more time and Nunez coming off a knee injury, keeping Deven through ST'ing makes more sense.

One other option could have been to put Pedey on the 60 day DL, watch Brentz hit 8 HRs in ST'ing, and then trade Brentz for more than we got.

Ok - here we go - Good for you Max that you give notin some credit. To some maybe notin clarified something but I would guess that almost everyone posting regularly on this board knew exactly what would happen with respect to our 40 man roster.

I mentioned this earlier but I will say again that with what our potential looks like at the plate, keeping Marrero around doesn't look quite so ridiculous. This team will need some solid infield defense and Marrero can field well 3 different positions. All of a sudden, they don't really need his bat. They will need a glove though. I'm not a big Marrero fan but I think they may need his glove. Devers, Nunez, Bogaerts. We hope that Devers comes along but in reality what do you see there?

No surprise there.

From what I've read, Brentz is a good guy. I wish him the best.

I am curious to see what happens with Holt. The Sox could seemingly really use the roughly $2 mil saved in his contract if he's let go. OTOH, he has an option remaining which makes him a valuable depth piece.

Personally, I'm hesitant to let him go.

Lin is pretty good on D as well.

I hope Bryce finally gets a real shot and crushes it .i hope in two years he's hitting 27 bombs and driving in 85 .

I don't think Pittsburgh is the best place for him to get a shot. If you really want him to get a shot, hope Pittsburgh releases him and he ends up on the White Sox, where the outfielders aren't as good and the best minor league depth is years away. He might be able to step in today and platoon with Nicky Delmonico.

And since the White Sox have a couple high profile prospects in Eloy Jimenez and Blake Rutherford who are both a year or two (or three) away, they're not as likely to bring anyone significant into the mix on any long term deal

If the Sox keep Hanley, Leon and Swihart, they need a middle infielder who can play CF, unless the re-arrange the outfield if Bradley gets hurt. Holt is the closest fit, I guess. Makes me wonder why Marrero is still around instead of Taylor. ...

If we need a CF'er, we move JD to LF and Beni to CF.

Nunez can also play LF.

Absolutely. JD can certainly play left and we have two very good center fielders and one outstanding right fielder on the roster.

Playing JD or Nunez in LF, whenever an OF'er needs rest will help get HRam, Nunez or Moreland some extra PAs,

Hey Moon, With JD, HanRam and Moreland all pretty much 1st baseman or DH's....(the OF is obviously pretty much taken up) how do you see them all getting AB's? Especially with JD saying he would rather play the field full-time. I'm very curious how this shakes out. Not a bad problem to have but you gotta figure they are hoping JD gets about 550AB's.
