Indeed if I were Boston, I'd tell JD that I'd do 3/75-80 or something ... more average salary for a much more comfortable time frame. But there is no reason to up the 5 year offer.

No it's the Redsox being idiots and not paying the man in the same stratosphere.I am pissed now at this team it's been an absolute horse and pony show .125 for 5 is a solid offer 100 million ???? Are opt out clauses really a selling point any more? Hasn't this maddeningly frustrating off season destroyed their appeal? Is JD really talking to Arizona and saying " this of season has totally sucked and been completely disappointing. Any way we can make sure my contract let's me do it again in two years? "

 

The only time a player will want to opt out going forward will be 2021 when the new union contract is bargained. Until then, I don't think salaries are going to skyrocket at any point.

Jose Abreu is a far better mentor to fellow Cuban Yoan Moncada than Hanley Ramirez (not to mention $9 million cheaper, three years younger, with more years of team control unless the dreaded option vests, and more productive with 9.1 to 0.6 fWAR over the last three seasons).

I don't think the offer to JD is a lowball offer, considering no other team has offered more.

 

However, if the current offer is indeed $100 mil, which is a lot lower than anyone expected JD to be signed for, it doesn't feel like Dombrowski is that intent on signing JD. I completely understand and agree with the idea of not bidding against yourself, but this just seems to go so against Dombrowski's MO with free agents. I am surprised he hasn't increased the offer a little to get his man.
